OP NOTE: I purchased a 65W version from this seller on Amazon last week and it has been great. The seller has a 97% rating over 12 months. So I thought I would share it but it sold out. I spotted this this even better spec unit with 5 stars and shared it. Unknown to me this unit or something very similar has been listed previously and has a lower review of 2.7 stars. My experience with this seller has been good, but the speculation on this post seems to think it will be otherwise. I’m not connected to the seller so I don’t know what the story is however just to be ‘safe’ I have requested the deal be unpublished. I hope my other 2 active posts bring more joy than grumbles.

    LOL
    Stay far away.
But if you wanna stick this no name charger in to your $3000 laptop,Hey who am i to judge?

    • My 65W is… aww read the above response.

$24.99 by the same seller. what is the difference between the 2?

    • +5

After too many negative reviews, the seller started a new listing (and asked a mate to leave a 5 stars review).

      • +1

Ahh, 2.7 star with 5 custermer ratings. I see, I see.

        • Thanks for posting the other listing with some concerning reviews:

          • Faulty item. Needs to be returned and reviewed by Amazon for safety concerns.
          • Product was faulty. Unit was flashing/sparking internally.
          • Faulty cable.

For people with Macbook Pro 15 or 16 inch laptops, honestly, just use an original charger. Get another original one if you have to.

@ShipShapeRC: As O O pointed out, the current AU review average for the link he posted is 2.7 out of 5.

Honestly, this whole USB-C thing (started by Apple) is not good for consumers. When you use third party cables and chargers, unless you have proper meters to check, you don't know whether it is working properly. Do you know that Macbook Pro's will still show charging even if the charger is operating on 5V mode? Also, even Amazon branded USB-IF certified cables are not reliable enough. Macbook Pro's can be fussy and if it doesn't quite like the cable or charger, it can reject operating at proper PD mode (yet still showing charging).

When you look at the specs of this charger, you can clearly tell they simply carbon copied Apple's specs. They didn't even bother updating to the new one. Apple released newer revision of 61W and 87W of chargers in 2018. Ideally, you would prefer that version. We are not talking about a mobile phone charger here. This is a 87W charger. Do you really trust this brand enough? Your laptop will try to work with it and you won't know unless you look at the voltage, current and noise (which most people don't have the necessary gears to check). If you bothered checking tear down reviews of chargers, you would know original chargers simply use better design and quality components. A lot of no name brand ones are really dodgy.

And, do you know that there is zero advantage using an 87W charger on Macbook Pro 13 inch (which uses a 61W charger)? Lastly, the included cable, claiming to be USB 3.1 gen 1, is it correctly e-marked or it is one of the dodgy ones?

  • If you spend about $2 you can get the Choetech 60w USB-C Charger (single port) $34.19 which is UL (USA) certified for safety. I can't post the deal as:

L and P-platers are prohibited from posting deals for Choetech

    • I've posted it a few weeks ago.

    • 60W wont work on my laptop. It needs 65W minimum.

      • +2

If it is a proper USB-C/PD laptop, then it should still work. The laptop battery doesn't constantly charge at full rate. Charging does need to slow down towards the end. It is like a mobile phone battery, except bigger capacity. Generally, there is also a bit of buffer built in (laptop makers don't just provide a power adapter that's just enough and no power supply operates at 100% efficiency).

Run it through an USB-C/PD meter, you will see. Just because a power adapter is rated at 65W, it doesn't mean it constantly operates at 65W and certainly not minimum 65W. If what you stated is true, then when your laptop is on standby and battery is fully charged, your power adapter still sends 65W constant to it, that would fry the battery and/or the laptop. Even non-USB-C/PD laptop chargers operate in the same way. Just plug one into a meter and you will see.

With USB-C/PD, there is generally a negotiation phase, it won't go straight to 65W as that could fry the laptop. The laptop decides based on the charger, its battery level, and the cable which voltage and current level to engage. These chargers are USB-C/PD-PDO so they do voltage stepping. The whole USB-C/PD mess continues as USB-C/PD-PPS devices are now on the market.

From my tests, MBPs can differentiate between good and subpar cables and subpar cables constantly getting less power through (and on occasions not allowed to operate in PD fast charge mode). Same for mobile phones (the cable can make a difference, same goes for the charger). Apple's USB-C charging cable is lousy for data, but for power, it is rated for 100W.

        • Well I got a 45W PD charger here and a 100W PD cable combo that 2 different model lenovo laptops wont even look at (works well on phone and other USB C fast charge items), yet the 65W PD version I have from this dude works perfectly. I assumed the 45W would charge as it is PD but it did not. And as I don't have any other USB C laptops to tinker with, my experiment is at an end. Other than that, I have read others say they found PD chargers below 65W would not work on these models of laptop. My experience agrees with their statement. I only wanted one spare sand I have that now.

          • @ShipShapeRC: I just asked my brother to let me try his Lenovo X series laptop. Results below:

Apple Original 61W charger: Works, Charging fine. No complain whatsoever.
Apple Original 29W charger: It does work, but there is a warning stating a slow charger is plugged in.

I purposely tested the 29W charger because it has a really weird spec (that's why Apple stopped selling it). Apple original cable used. When it comes to USB-C/PD for laptop, I stick with original. What you described is the reason why I indicated this whole USB-C/PD thing is a mess. Some of the cables can be quite dodgy and it is known that a lot of USB 3.1 gen 2 cables are incorrectly coded (so while they might be okay for data, they are not correctly e-marked for power). Same goes for the chargers. Depending on how they are coded, you can run into issues with compatibilities.

          • @ShipShapeRC: Did a couple of more tests and it does appear Lenovo laptops are more picky. His laptop doesn't accept my USB-C/PD meter probing the voltage and current in the middle. As soon as I plugged that device in, even with original Lenovo charger, it stops drawing any current. I am guessing it requires the entire power connection circuit to run on cable and charger correctly e-marked throughout. I can still measure the power usage, but I need to do it on the source end.

  • Looks like a fake apple charger

    • doesn’t claim to be apple, seems similar “apple style” chargers are going for $25 on amazon. they all seem to look similar and similar spec so chances are same internally.

there are only a few switch mode chip manufacturers, and they also supply circuit designs, so if they cheap out on power supply it’s more about the claimed wattage vs delivered wattage e.g it’s a 60w that claims to be 87w.

Take the post down, you're promoting someone selling a dodgy product and probably going to ruin their $3k mbp. They just closed their previous shop for their last wave of negative reviews!

    • +2

I have requested the post to be removed. Not because of the perfectly working product I purchased, but because of community feeling for the seller who I have nothing to do with.

      • That's why I didn't neg you :)

Glad I read this whole post

The OP should be ashamed of themselves :/

Dude, I bought a well made product that works great and saw a different model with even better spec by the same seller and shared. The shame is that I took time away from my family to share with the OzB community. Maybe that's why you have not shared a post since 2018. Most of the deals I post are well received. Despite my best of intentions occasionally the community see's something imperfect in a deal. This is the case here. You are reminding me to spend more time with my family and less time sharing here, so thank you.

      • +1

I feel for you OP. I've been put off posting deals on this site when I come across them because of the reaction of people on here. I'm now a lurker/leech and don't want to contribute anything to this community. I take from the community because any time that I've tried to offer something back it gets hated upon instead of helping me make better posts. It can get pretty toxic and I don't have enough headspace to deal with the trolls on here.

Don't be ashamed like that muppet above said!

        • Thanks for the supportive words.

          • @ShipShapeRC: The intention is good. It's just 87W is for Macbook Pro 15/16 inch laptops. People with those laptops would generally use just the original chargers.

I give Lenovo a big tick for integrating the USB-C cable with the official charger. That way, you cannot change the USB-C cable when using the original charger (so no dodgy / shonky cable). When you actually test an Apple charger with various cables, you see some rather unpleasant results with inferior cables.

If we just look at the specs of this product, the cable itself needs to be better quality than the ones provided by WD, Seagate (they generally provide 1m or less USB 3 data cable) and Apple (which is USB 2, but does support 100W PD). One cannot help but be cynical about the quality of the cable. With USB-PD, the power adapter chipset does quite a lot so things will appear to work, but the voltage / current noise can be subpar. Not good for your laptops in the long run.

These 3rd party accessory makers know what customers want, but they don't understand there are reasons the original cables / chargers are more restricted (to provide a higher margin of tolerance).

It's better to find ways to get original chargers / cables at discounted prices, rather than go for these chargers. The reality is that even original cables / chargers are not necessary well suited for products from other brands. Samsung and Apple chargers don't play well with each other. Both camps deliberately code their chargers that way. Google cables aren't that good, but they work well with Google products.
