Probably the best CPU Air Cooler money can buy.

Oh don't get me wrong if i was to be buying this cooler i would get the cheapest one.
Unless if the difference in colour was like $10 maybe.
Just think its BS is all.
I would buy the D14 as well for that price.
is the D14 off that link compatible with AM4 ?
Seems a winner which I'd get over this if so.
Yup comes in the kit along with mounts for intel and some thermal paste.
it's not just a colour difference,…
when you cover the fins with some sort of layer on top it changes the performance,
even the plastic compound, etc
How does be quiet! do it? It's only a $6 difference between their Pure Rock 2 models with and without the black heatsink.
Because they have an incredibly effective brand/image to uphold, would you prefer they didn't offer black and just the beige instead, because that's your other option.
And if you're building a SFF PC then Noctua NH-U9S also seems to be cheaper - you can get one for $89.99 (comparing to $110+ at local counterparts)
Have these gone up in price over the years?? Last time I built a nice silent pc it was 2013 i5. I just remember ridiculous prices back then?
I know right! I remember thinking that buying the Thermalright SLK900 for 90 way back in the day was super expensive, then I thought my D14 at $110 was expensive. At this rate, custom loops won't be that much more expensive lol.
Ya. Even CPUS, RAM seems to be super expensive these days. Maybe they are better but with Moores law I thought there would be at least some stability in prices not increase.
The increase is not linear with capacity, which is all you can hope for.
This didn't exist in 2013.
Yes the D14 was cheaper.
well come parts are getting cheaper and more powerful, PSU, SSD, Ram…. and more case choices.
Thanks OP!
Isn't the NH-D15S with much better motherboard compatibility far better value at $129.99
https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B00XUVGLEU/ref=ppx_yo_d…
Given that adding a new fan (to bring the performance up to par) on the NH-D15S brings the price up to $167.53, it is only slightly better value, but more flexible in case you need to mount the second fan higher to clear RAM etc.
So - for anyone out there who has a non-windowed ATX case, which brand/model did you buy, please? I'll be getting a 3900X and MSI X570 Tomahawk (and just ordered this fan). Just need a case which will fit plenty of 3.5" drives.
it really depends on the RAM you're getting mate… you'll need to adjust that first fan according to the height of the RAM. I've got mine sitting directly on top of the LPX with a 0.05mm gap between the fan and it "just" fits in the 275R Airflow. Dimension of this case is 457mm x 216mm x 455mm and according to the website it states a Maximum CPU Cooler Height of 170mm
hope this helps.
which brand/model did you buy, please?
I;ve an NZXT H440, but no long available in the market.
Just need a case which will fit plenty of 3.5" drives.
I'd suggest Fractal Design Define Series, e.g Define 7
Thanks for the recommendation - just had a quick look: they look nice, but not cheap… :)
If you dont mind me asking.. why did you go 570 chipset??
Good reviews and I'm going to get a Sabrent 1TB Rocket NVMe 4.0 so I need PCIe4.0
Ahh oks. I'm also doing a new build for a friend and going 550 for his 3900x (Asus ROG STRIX B550-E Mobo). Was keen to see the reasons you opted for 570 since 550 has replaced it.
Have you decided on RAM yet?
@vash5: No I haven't, as I'm looking to assemble from Black Friday sales onwards. Will be getting 2 x 32GB most likely 3600MHz
@vash5: Oh btw - what did you meant the 550 has replaced it? You didn't mean the 550 has replaced the X570 do you, as that's not the case.
@RichardMelbourne: Technically you are right. its not replacement but it is the latest chipset and I suspect going forward will have a longer life span than 570. See the second image down in this article:
https://www.extremetech.com/computing/310764-amd-will-suppor…
That's a good plan to get great bang for buck. The only issue you may face is by the time you assemble the PC and should you have any faulty hardware.. your quick and easy return period might expire and you may have a tougher time claiming DOA/RMA. I'm sure it will be fine, just something to keep in mind.
Whoa.. 32g is massive!! Doing video editing/CAD/3D work?? You may find this helpful in regards to which RAM you should get
https://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/3508-ryzen-3000-memory-be…
@vash5: My work laptop has 32GB and my old home PC (7+ years old) has 24GB. So I'm gonna get 64GB in the new PC (btw - I was planning on getting all of the parts within days of each other - I just got the fan now as it's a great price). I'm a dev, and have VMs, SQL Server (multiple instances), and so on running. Plus also leaves some overhead as I don't replace my PCs very often.
@RichardMelbourne: Nice!! I can see why you want that much RAM. At least your getting it for a right reasons and not just building a gaming rig like most peeps.
Did you suss out the 550?
@vash5: Yeah, I want pcie4 (for the M.2 I mentioned earlier), so will need the X570 as 550 is only PCIe3
Also.. have a look at Phanteks, quite positive reviews.

Thanks for the case recommendation: do you actually have this model? I ask because it says up to 160mm cooler and the Noctua website says it's 165mm. This of course then means I can't raise the second fan if I need more RAM clearance…
Good call about the cooler, I didn't see that. Wasn't sure what your budget is so opted for the lower tier price point but didnt look into clearance.
Nope I dont.. I do however have Entho Pro. Have been very happy with build quality and case overall.

I was looking at getting this one P600s Closed Case for the upcoming build. Might be worth you looking at that one too pending your budget.
https://www.pccasegear.com/products/45322/phanteks-eclipse-p…
@vash5: Thanks. I might end up getting a full tower case as it will only take up the same floor space.
It'll fit with out the 2nd fan, you can offset the middle fan lower. I used corsair vengeance lpx which is not that high still pushes up the fan
Thanks OP.. nabbed one :)
B550 replaced the B450 and not the x570.
I am running one of these on my 3900x/Asus x570 build and it performs better than the corsair h115i platinum AIO that I had on it originally. Sure I get less RGBness but I can't knock the performance. It can be a touch noisy though.
This or AIO Liquid Cooling? For Ryzen 7 3700 planning to Overclock.
Ideally AIO.. but this will work.
love noctua
but 170$?
because it's black?
seems expensive
It's now $169.91.. quick before it goes up +$1 again 😅
Its only really an issue if you care about aesthetics, but if you were that way inclined you'd probably want an AIO as its a much cleaner look. I went for the standard D15 as I dont open the case all that often and its out of sight.
If you want a much cheaper option and dont care about the colour, Newegg has the D14 for about $99 + shipping which gives very similar performance to the D15.
