Cheapest I have seen these including the 15% off eBay UK deal via AU sellers that accepted discounted gift cards from over 2 years ago!

They are a closed design and not for everyone. You will either love them or hate them. Great for movies and music, good but not the best for gaming but will still wipe the floor with any of the gaming marketed headsets combos.

If you're unsure on Beyer or dropping nearly $600, I would recommend getting the cheaper Beyer 770 that you can pickup for a ridiculous $170.29 right now! (only the 80 ohm and grey colour at that price) - https://www.amazon.com.au/Beyerdynamic-DT-770-PRO-32-Monitor…

  • What makes these so great over say a $300 pair of premium branded headphones..? isn't there a point of diminishing returns on these things?

    • +1

They're for audio work predominately. Probably wouldn't recommend as regular listening headphones unless money is no object.

    • +2

I used to think this way until I actually started trying out Hifi stereo gear and headphones, it's a world of difference and a really fun, if very expensive, hobby. It helps to find goods deals like this one.

    • +2

There's a point of diminishing returns to every hobby, how much you want to invest is entirely up to you. The experience to me, of listening to music is something I value highly so I can spend more as I like.

    • +1

there absolutely is a point of diminishing returns.

but not all $300 pairs of headphones are great, especially the "premium branded" ones. Many $300 headphones can't compete with $100 headphones, and so forth for $600 headphones vs the best $300 headphones.

  • +1

Pulled the trigger on the 770 cans. Not happy with any of my current headphones, switching to a discrete mic/phones configuration for my new setup. Price is well within my budget (unlike the 1770s).

Various reviews say that the 770s sound better with an amp. Any recommendations? Primary use will be with laptops in home office.

    • +2

Topping E30 DAC and Topping L30 amp.

    • I use a behringer UMC202HD which can push out enough power.
That being said even out of the iPad or laptop they sound fantastic they just need to go 2/3 volume as compared to 1/4 on other headphones

    • The Atom and Schitt Magni/Modi should be within budget.

Just got the 880 600 Ohm to join the DMS and Zeos hype train.

Not entirely sure my Schitt stack will power it though.

  • These things are 250 ohms, make sure you just don’t buy this to plug straight in your phone, you would need special equipment to push out this power, for reference standard Apple earbuds for an iPhone are 40 ohms.

  • still wipe the floor with any of the gaming marketed headsets combos.

They wipe the floor with the Audeze Mobius do they?

    • +2

Mobius probably not, planar magnetic and better at positional audio for gaming you can’t beat them, especially with the DSP settings. BUT beyers are amazing price to performance ratio for critical listening. Lots of people use the DT1990 Pro for gaming (the open brother of this DT1770) and it’s also considered one of the great mid/almost top tier bargains of the headphone world.

    • Comparing wireless to wired is a false dichotomy.

      • +1

You should put a preorder in for the Drop Panda then. Many critical ears in the biz say there is absolutely no difference running them via a high end desktop amp vs wireless.

  • Been looking for a pair of close can to match up to my other pairs of Senn 650 and Focal Clear open can. This is to use in occassion where the open can isn't suitable. wonder how this pair will compare ?

  • Ah, look at the first 1 star review. I have the same issue with my beyerdynamic having one drive randomly died on me twice despite infrequent usage and has no drop or abuse. After a replacement I have sold it.

    • I had the same issue with my HD600's. I think it's just an issue with headphones generally and not Beyerdynamic specifically.

      • Happened once is ok but the second time around after lightly used (I virtually have only a few hours run on it and take every care not to bump it or scratch it), it is a designed flaw.

  • a friendly reminder that make sure you have tried them before you decide to buy. I'm having one with me right now. I have to say they are really professional in mixing and recording, perfect working tools. However if you are going to enjoy music with this, consider if you are used to its 'smothering' and close sound signature as it is fully closeback. I am a fan of beyer as well, i've got Dt 1770, 880 and T90 and tried Dt770/880/990/1770/1990 in storedj/mannys. I really regret that i had chosen Dt1770 as i don't have that much 'critcally professional listening', i love Dt880 and 1990 more than 1770/770
