I got 16GB WiFi model from JB Hifi….basically i made a complaint online about their "price match" policy. Got a call 15mins later from a manager and they told me to go to Pitt street to collect the device for 249!!

I purchased ACER Iconia A500 16GB wifi version last Sunday at $386 from JB HiFi in NSW.
Has spoken to a salesman, he said if I can present a copy of invoice shows AU$ 249.00 from any retailers and must be in NSW then they can refund for me.
Can any one in NSW who purchased at $249 help ?
BTW, tomorrow [30-OCT] will be the last day for refund.

I just thought about it and I told myself that why do I even need to buy 3G version for. Seriously, I am using Android phone and there is a built-in Wifi hotspot feature… save me the extra $90.
But I still wonder do I really need this… I can get a 2nd hand 12" Dell Latitude with Core2Duo for <$200 and it can do more things than these tablets anyway… so hard to decide :)
Doesn't having the 3G component in it allow for assisted GPS? Or am I wrong? ><

The wifi only model comes with GPS (it is a bit unusual, given Apple does not do it for their wifi only iPads). However, it does take a while to lock (there are some fixes apprently… but haven't tried).

The one guy was a bit of a douche, gloating about how he & several other Good Guys staffers had bought multiple tabs and were planning on throwing them for sale online in the next few days after the sale.

I'm not sure, the guy said they're no longer selling the Acer tabs though because they hadn't sold as well as they'd expected them to so once they're gone, they're gone for good.
of course the sales were not well. The retailer marked up the price so high. I bet the cost price for the top of the line might be only $200 or even lesser

Great deal! Managed to bag a 16gb wifi model for $249 from a JB Hifi.
Took me half an hour of 'negotiation' between two stores but finally one agreed to sell at that price. They didn't want to do it without proof of a competitor with local stock and insisted that both GG and OW had pulled all the bargains offline.
Had to break out the Obi Wan Jedi Mind trick in the end "you will sell it to me for $249…." (best Alec Guinness voice)
good work! I went into a JB on Friday night and even though the GG and OW in the same shopping area HAD stock (at that time), the JB staffer said they had been told by head office not to pricematch.

at $400 and above, tablets are an expensive 'toy' to most people.
at $250 (and $99 for the HP tablets) then more people are willing to shell out to get one for the family.
I'm sure that there are some people out there that use their tablets for work purposes, but honestly most people would be facebooking, tweeting and playing Angry Birds and similar on any branded / OS tablet.
Please, no more people post about getting the A501 3G 32GB for $199. It hurts too much LOL..

Anyone having problems with the system updates? It downloads the update fine then when it tries to install it comes up with "This update is invalid and will be cancelled"
I updated it to 3.2 without any issue. Try to reset it.
Mine worked without issue but some on whirlpool have had problems with OTA updates.
As a last resort you can download the update from XDA forums and flash it from internal storage or microSD.
Apparently Acer won;t supply the file and only allow updates OTA.
Took mine 3 goes to complete. I did restart the Tablet before the final try, so that may help.
i tried this only once yesterday and I gor that error.
I yet to try it again. The silly thing is it restarts the download which I have for again which if you think about it is not too bad as the download could be corrupt.
Does anyone have the link to download directly from the xda forum?
Mine failed several times before I rebooted it and ran the update before opening any apps and it worked first go
Hey all, managed to get my hands on a 16GB 3G - decided I didn't need it as I already had an ASUS Transformer. Am hoping to offload it for the cost price PLUS a small delivery fee ($10). Am happy to meet at Glen Waverley Shopping Centre VIC 3150. I don't want to use Ebay as their fees are laughable haha.

I'd like to see the receipt too! I got flatly refused by a staff member there who got really irate and agressive really fast, told me the prices were "dangerously underpriced" and he would sell all the rest of the stock at full price within a week.
Just couldn't resist a A501 32 GB from the Robina GG. Some left of all models if anyone is after one.
Today is last day. Prices go up tomorrow.

They're identical on the outer shell and dimensions. The A500 even has the sim card slot so you should be sweet

When i was searching for a deal, I came across one from JB but it was like $50 which I don't mind buying if there are no other better ones out there which happen to be cheaper.
There's cases on ebay for $10 and up. Someone posted a link earlier in this thread.
The Acer case that JB sell for $50 can be bought at OW for $40 - Exactly the same case.
OW also have screen protectors for $24 and ebay has them cheaper for the 'generic' ones.
I'm currently using a cut-down ipad $6 screen protector.

I have been going through eBay all this morning and so far, I yet to find one that does not look very cheap.
I will probably walk in OW and check what they have. I can see 2 models there. One selling for $49 and the other for $39. The last one they don't have a good photo of which I think is the one you are referring to.
I was looking at them in OW on Sunday. Only had the $40 in my OW - didn't look bad and better quality than usual ebay cheapo stuff.
I had a look this morning and the $39- seemed to be just a pouch. The leather folding cover didn't overly impress me. Think I will have a good look at the Ebay offerings.

my local GG kotara was selling the cases for $30
I personally think cases would ruin the look of the tablet :-P
I'll just wait for the new Acer tablet to come out and buy these cases when they are on clearance if I decide I want one :-D
Hi All , I need a huge favour … Is anyone out there that purchased the A501 3g version able to do a Nandroid backup of the stock ROM 3.0.1 i believe version/build number is** ACER_A501_1.309.03_COM_GEN1 **and post the backup for me somewhere. I lost my backup after moving onto a custom rom. Greatly appreciate any help.

I thought I had backed up using CWM and it seems I overwrote it when I flashed the new rom .. because .. When looking in there the Clockwork folder is not there anymore .. so I guess either way I didnt backup .. but the weird thing is a lot of the other stuff I downloaded etc are still there ..
I am a newbie to this as well. I am not planning to straight away root it and install a custom ROM though.

i was wondering why ppl have it rooted, only benefit I've read is to enhance battery performance, any other benfits?
The main reason I rooted was to allow connections to ad-hoc wifi hotspots, and to allow NTFS drives to be mounted.
I think adding NTFS drive support is essential.
There are several reasons why I rooted my device..
1 — backing up apps and system files is a breeze with titanium backup .. ( however device must be rooted)
2 — custom roms - they are usually trimmed down from all the bloatware and unnecessary crap. and often have more useful apps etc installed.

As per my above post , I have finally obtained a copy of the original Rom (with great difficulty) :) If anyone is in need of it I have uploaded it to share . I know how difficult it was to obtain and for anyone who is in need of the A501 original Australian stock ROM ACER_A501_1.309.03_COM_GEN1. I have uploaded it here .. please remember this is for the A501 (3g) model only …..

I did some research last night and apparently if you do update to 3.2 then you can't root it anymore.
I could not find any posts on xda or google to root 3.2.
but you can root it while you are on the stock 3.1, then install a custom rom for 3.2 and still be rooted.
Can anyone confirm if this is all correct?
Thats correct ,You can install a pre-rooted custom 3.2 rom .. the only time the file i posted would become useful is if you wanted to go back to stock from a custom rom. Which is a must for warranty returns etc.
Did you use Gingerbreak or the other tool I found (can't remember the name now)?
do you want to share your experience with us? I am a little hesitant to do it to be honest as I have not rooted any android device before (well, I really want to root the htc Salsa, but there is no software root available at the moment)
I used iconia root 1.3 it takes approx. 10 seconds to do .. Very simple . ginger break did not work on my tablet. once rooted I installed CWM (clock work mod) using acer recovery installer from the market. Once you have installed cwm installed any custom ROM u like..
