Help Me Decide on New nbn Provider

I need to get a new NBN (FTTN) provider. I have never been able to get over 80 Mbps (old copper ??) I have tried 3 different providers so maybe 50/20 will do. I want to know what everyone is liking at the moment.
Thanks.

I’ve been quite happy with tangerine so far. Only needed customer service when setting up and they were fantastic.

(Accidentally clicked the wrong answer and can’t revote

Thanks a friend has them for fixed wireless and is happy, also fixed the voting

    belong. good and cheap

    • Try Speedtest.net on your Belong connection but don’t let it choose the nearest server. Pick another server in another capital city of Australia. Last time I tried this on Belong it was painfully apparent that they don’t have bandwidth available to get your data around the nation, and only to the nearest data centre.

All Belong connections I’ve tested have ridiculously poor performance. One HFC and one FTTN recently Two different areas.

It’s like they’re deliberately cheating speed tests by doing so.

      • just tried and getting same speed as local with brisbane and LA

Try again during closer to peak hours - I'd be very surprised if you don't see a result (literally even 50mbps HFC services were coming back with 3mbps results).

@kipps: I get 40Mbps now (7pm Sydney FTTC) to Sydney, Brisbane and Hobart.
To LA I get 22-40, depending on which server I hit.

Superloop or Aussie, that's all you need to consider

    Belong.

  • PM me your address and I can check your max line speeds

    • Current and max line speeds can be found in your modem settings or by asking your ISP.

      • -1

        not with hfc

        • +1

I was referring to FTTN modem settings.

Ask an ISP that offers 250Mbps or 1G for your HFC max line speed.

  • I’ve been happy with Aussie so far. When I had issues with payment, the customer service team were great.

Aussie BB for sure they're awesome.

    • But is there any difference? appear to be $10 more expensive

      • +2

Yes there is. International and domestic speeds max out at almost any time of day. They have local support that knows what they are doing. No contracts. Get a promo code and give it a go. Well worth the slight premium TBH.

  • Aussie, superloop, Launtel

I've used all 3 on their respective promos for 50/20 fttn and they are all good and all about 69 bucks a month.

Launtel currently, and getting slightly over 50mbps due to the NBN covid over provisioning or whatever it is.
Won't stay post promo pricing though as it jumps up a fair bit

Jumping every 6-7 mths is a pretty easy task to maintain decent pricing options due to sign up promos

The overprovisioning isn’t just Launtel. It’s a NBN wide thing.

I'm surprised no one else is suggesting Mate Communicate. Seems to be one of the cheapest while still having the local aussie support. https://www.letsbemates.com.au/nbn/
I went with them and it was so refreshing dealing with them coming from Telstra. Quick and easy to sign up. No contracts, Cheap prices, and $10 off if you bundle a phone plan.
If you go with Mate, use the referral system and use this link to pick a random ozbargainer who will get $50 credit if you use their mate code when you sign up https://www.ozbargain.com.au/api/referral/335

Without a phone plan their prices aren't any different to Aussie or superloop with their promos, but could be a good alternative for switching cycle

    • I'm on a bundle with them $69 for 100/20 + $20 Mobile - average speed in Blacktown LGA - 85-90 up, 25-30 down

With the latest increase in prices I can no longer recommend Aussie Broadband. They can't justify their price hike. It pains me, but if they try and put up my price, I'll have to look elsewhere.

However there is one wrinkle in this, they are offering a 75Mbit service at a slightly reduced price as part of this. If all you can hit is 80Mbit, it might be worth a look, though from memory its not really enough of a discount.

    • their price for the 50/20 is the same as Mate communicates 100/20

      • Their 75/20 price is $10 less than their 100/20 current price. So for the OP it might be interesting.

However, I would agree that the prices should be going down, not up. 100/40 should be $50, not $100 and the lesson of reliance on broadband when everyone is working from home should be "we should make it more reasonably priced and available" not "we can screw them out of even more money".

  • Optus paying $73 for 50mbps. Excellent speed. Been With Optus for last 5 years. First cable now NBN.

Please add optus in ur list

I'm on TPG $69 50/20 plan for over a year now, speeds are pretty consistent at around 46mbps down and 18mbps up.

    • I am with tpg 50/20. Quite happy with the speed. You also get PAYG home phone line well.

    • Pretty happy with TPG (ADSL and NBN), gave the NBN modem for free since I was their ADSL customer.

  • I went for highest speed (Optus), but it's probably the most expensive.

Aussie Broadband have just jacked their 100/20 plan to $99/month
    Not happy Karen

  • Tangerine.

Initially I was on AussieBroadband and was very happy with them.

But then I decided to give Belong a try to maximise savings… and I haven't changed back since. I have had no problems with Belong HFC. I'm doing $50 or $55 a month and can't complain.

  • My standard advice is:

    • Belong (30/20) if you want cheap
    • Aussie BB / Superloop if you want the fastest and are willing to pay for it
    • Vodafone if you want 4G fallback (e.g. if you had ADSL beforehand, and it dropped out every time it rained)
    • Launtel for a holiday house
  • I'm with Aussie, it's good but not cheap.

I tried inquiring with Superloop about moving but never heard back.

    • I just switched home and work to Superloop. No complaints whatsoever here. Did it all online and the cutover took all of 5 minutes.

  • I was with Aussie Broadband for both work (100/40) and home (50/20) connections but switched both to Superloop in the last week due to constant price increases. I'm on FTTN.

So far, Superloop have been rock solid and no complaints.

Signed up online and the cutover literally took minutes. Maybe 5 minutes max downtime while the ABB connection dropped and the SL connection took over.

  • Looks ike there is a heavy preference for 'Aussie BB' does this mean people think it is worth the extra $10-15/mth?

    • It all depends how much you value a high quality network with good support

  • i am with tangerine and will be moving at the end of month speeds are horrible only moved from mate to get cheaper but will now be going back never had a issue with them.

  • ABB are the clear winner IMO.
I’ve been with with for 2 years and never had a problem.

  • ABB 100/20
    thanks for the help.

    • A wise choice :)

  • Thanks for the info everyone. I'll take my chance with Belong next. $55 appears stand-out value and with everyone else hiking prices (and ABB no longer grandfathering) I don't see a downside in committing for 12 months.

After some initial problems right after getting NBN my line has been extremely stable for well over 1 year now. Means odds of needing support are low.

Surprised to see Superloop has fewer votes at the time of writing than Belong. I've only had ABB and Superloop so far and didn't notice much difference between the two.

If anything Superloop made things easier for me: the churn from ABB to Superloop took about 5 minutes. The churn the other way several hours. Then I had to contact ABB again to opt out of CGNAT. It wasn't urgent, so I just sent an email. Still surprised it took 36 hours to get acted upon.

  • Suggested Launtel

    Launtel

    Great company in my experience.

  • Looking to head elsewhere as I just got an email from ABB that my plan is going up $10 and upload speed being cut to 20mbps (from 50mbps).

  • Future Broadband is my first pick and the one I went with. Data plans that have data banking (5TB). High quality business network so you get a free routed static IP, constant fast speeds and stability, had very few if any dropouts in the 2 years I've been with them.. I'm on FTTN and its been a good move for me. Pay in advance discount. Referral program and Au based support.

Nothing against Superloop, Aussie, Launtel or Leaptel. All have their positives.

    • Add it to the poll as a Suggestion. Just based on your comment here, I'll probably switch over to them and see how things go.
