@KangaDrew: It explicitly says in the T&Cs that you are not allowed to create more than one account.

                  • @jv: JV it seems obtaining a benefit by deception isn’t a law worth worrying about here as long as the victim is in a better financial position than the perpetrator

FYI u can sub to amazon prime to get a promo code added to ur account which lowers the price of echo dot to $10 and immediately cancel prime. U won’t be charged for the prime sub.

    • …unless you've had Amazon Prime before. There's reports of people doing this and being charged $3.50 for a 'partial month' sub.

      • subscribe to prime, get code, cancel prime, order echo dot for $10.
-> no charge on your card for prime.

      • Really? Hmm. I never had proper prime before just free trial they offered. They haven’t charged me for the order yet so we’ll see.

        • I was commenting on "unless you've had Amazon Prime before. There's reports of people doing this and being charged $3.50 for a 'partial month' sub.".
You can avoid this charge (that some people reported), if you had prime before, by doing it via the way "subscribe to prime, get code, cancel prime, order echo dot for $10." Somebody else posted this before.

      • Just followed the steps above and have had Prime before, Got the Echo for $10 and no charge after cancelling Prime

  • amazon or google home?

Lifx works through google home. I'd still look at Philips Hue, Lifx were shortsighted by not building their system around an external hub like the Hue.

      • Thats the thing. Hue required you to have the hub function in Echo show 10 so lot of people are turned away from it. My friend bought Lifx instead of Hue because he cant be bothered with smart home hub as an extra thing he needs to buy.

        • But you can control your lights even when they are all switched off with the hub.

          • @AustriaBargain: Nah i agree with you. If I were to buy, itd be Philips as I want to set a system up myself.

          • @AustriaBargain: I have no dramas turning on my Lifx without a hub

      • Lol wut?
Got a house full of Lifx here.

I can turn them on and off by voice with Apple, Amazon. And Google.

But honestly, turning them on and off by voice wears thin.

A Google home contraption is definitely not required to use them.

So to answer - Amazon or Google home? Lifx and hue will work with either.

Lifx’s hub is basically either the cloud or your phone.

        • Fine if you live alone I guess.

          • @AustriaBargain: Not sure. Haven’t tried in that use case.

I get a strong impression that your understanding of Lifx is flawed.

My point is. Needing a hub isn’t really a strong point. And it’s not a bad point. It’s just a different way of working. Lifx doesn’t need a hub because they get their commands over wifi. Put simply, Hue needs a hub because the bulb gets its commands through Zigbee. And your phone can’t transmit zigbee. The hub is a translator.

            • @2025: I had over a dozen lifx bulbs, the ones just before the HomeKit update. They are nice and bright but not very "smart".

    • Works with Amazon Alexa as well.
