Hard as the pixel 4a only has a single rear camera, nearly every phone these days has at least 2. Not really much to compare against with these low specs.

      • +3

You do realise the number of cameras does not equate to a higher picture quality?

        • -4

No, just the phones ability to take certain photos. For example, 12MP is not enough if you want to print. Single fixed is also very limiting in narrow situations, if you travel or actually like taking different photos with your phone. But yes this will cater for most who don't really mind too much about photography/photos and just want quick snaps for social media.

          • @onlinepred: I have used the official samsung lens kit for my s7 Edge for the last 3 years. Traveled Europe with a small cylinder in my pocket for the wide and telephoto lenses.

Unfortunately for some reason they never continued with this trend so I've purchased moment lenses now. Having multiple lenses is good for unexpected photography which is the most common for sure. However…. I am happy to save some $$$ on having to buy a more expensive phone than I need to have multiple cameras compared to having lenses which will outlast the phone.

            • @SgtBatten: Nice good on you! It's a really great alternative. I guess in this case though, the 4a is made of plastic, and a 1 year old budget cpu, so it will start aging faster than it's single lens. The 4a is only 25-50% (depends on what you do though) faster than your S7 which is something to think about too ;-). It takes longer to process photos than the pixel 3

              • @onlinepred: Yes I have some reservations about the longevity of it. I can possibly wait to see what the 4a 5G offers as it will have an improved battery and processor. Appreciate that info with the percentages

      • The single best camera of any phone near this price… Kinda sad its missing ultra wide but dont even try tell me your low res zoom or heaven forbid 2MP macro is even worth calling a camera.

        • -2

The single best camera for social media 100% agree. If you want to print, nope. If you don't like the crazy oversaturated over processed look, nope.

          • @onlinepred: I am not a huge fan of saturation but the pixel line isnt that bad compared to say samsung… what else is comparable that this price besides the Iphone SE.

Though it is still worth noting most people are only after social media I guess not many print from a "budget" phone do they? or am I just clueless

            • @[Deactivated]: I've had a panoramic photo taken on my Pixel 2XL printed on a pretty large canvas and it looks fantastic.

Also, the high saturation can be toned down by switching off the HDR (default enabled) but this also helps to add detail to photos taken in sub-optimal situations so YMMV

            • @[Deactivated]: It's actually far worse, Samsungs have scene optimiser which adds the saturation, simply turn it off and you have far more realistic photos than pixels. Pixels look crazy saturated compared to samsungs with scene optimiser turned off.

    • Yeah would be the A51 here. also meant to compete with the iphone SE (cheaper) and Oneplus Nord (Not avaliable here). It will preform smoother for longer than the A51 and also always be on the latest security and android version. But physically the A51 may be nicer to some and probably a nicer screen.

Mainly most youtube reviewers seem to say it has by far the best still photo camera on any phone at this price while the iphone SE takes video.

  • +4

Would it kill them to include wireless charging?

    • Apparently so. I don't think wireless charging has come to any non flagships yet.

      • +4

        Iphone se has wireless charging.

        • and $150 more.

          • +2

@rupp1e: And has longer than 3 years software support.

            • @cloudie9: two years (5-3= 2 years), but yes, depending on what you NEED is how you should buy the phone. e.g bigger screen etc

  • +4

$600 AUD its not a budget phone here. S10's are now selling at ~700 which will be far better choice. I am very sad to see the price! We are getting ripped off

    • Don’t forget to add GST to the US converted price. Once this is added, and allowing for US state taxes the pricing is much closer.

      • Not importing from the US, why are they Marking up the prices ~+20% here.

      • +1

Yeah I think they are manufactured in Vietnam.

    • +1

      @KILLERbOnD
I am looking for an S10.
Can you give me a link where I can get it for around $700?

    • +5

If you prioritise camera quality and software update support (S10 only has 1 major update left before it loses support), then I can see how people would go with the Pixel 4a. But if you value camera versatility (3 cameras), build quality, functionality (wireless charging, IP rating, QHD display etc.), then go with the S10.

      • +2

I agree that we will get good software support from Google. But when you pay $600 for a phone and you think of using it for more than 2 years, I don't think its a good idea. Pixel's battery is small and wont last long also the plastic body is not durable. We also have to verify how it will handle heavy duty applications- like heating issues and all. Samsung's one UI is far better compared to its previous versions still not good as Google's.

Another advantage of Pixel I think you will get unlimited storage for photos. Not sure whether it comes with 4a as well.

        • I agree with you. The build quality doesn't seem great and even in MKBHD's review, he mentioned it seemed like the phone could snap in half. I guess if you chuck a solid case and take good care of it, you'll be fine. But Google do seem to have a good warranty experience so hopefully they'll fix any issues related to durability. They stopped the unlimited storage for photos starting from the Pixel 4 which really sucks cause it was also a 'feature' that differentiated the Pixel to any other android phone on the market.

I guess we got to wait for JerryRigEverything

    • At $600 you won't find anything that has flagship camera quality. Also you are comparing australian stock that comes with 2 year warranty with a grey import phone.

Making a good camera in a phone is more expensive than making a good spec'd phone, which is why you rarely see flagship killer with a good camera. Pixel3a, 4a, and iphone SE are the only less expensive phone with same camera quality as its big brother in my opinion. I wouldn't say they are perfect phone as they still make sacrifices in lots of aspect, but for those who don't care about small screen in iphone SE or mediocre performance in Pixel 4a, I would say they are still good phones for the price.

      • I agree it have a top notch camera. But can you please provide some proof in any other department pixel leads the competition?

        • You already answer your own question. The camera alone make such a huge difference. If you don't care much about camera, then you can buy $400 xiaomi phone which should perform same or even better than this phone. Or go for iphone SE if you want both performance and camera quality, but it cost $829(for 128 gb). Even with iphone SE you have to compromise with 4.7" lcd screen with huge bezel.

You also need to remember Pixel 3A XL and Pixel 3A cost $799 and $649 with only 64gb storage when it first come out. So I'm not sure what's your expectation out of it.

          • @yummypinacolada: No issues with battery life? Processor? Display? Durability?

            • @KILLERbOnD: Who knows? The phone hasn't come out yet. You can see MKBHD review, he has been using it for a week

              • +1

@yummypinacolada: Reviewers have already noted performance issues. Processor is equivelent to between the pixel 2 and pixel 3, while the SE has the current best CPU in any phone. I mean if you sit there comparing photos from phones all day, I could see why you want slightly more saturated photos than others for social media, but most wouldn't even notice.

    • Problem for the S10 is Samsung will only provide one more major update and you’ll see it around 9 months after the pixel. The people buying the pixel are buying it because of this. The same arguments can be made for any newly released products, wait or buy something older that’s has already been heavily discounted. Wait a few months and I bet there’ll be significant discounts for the 4a too.

  • +4

I just checked my current Pixel 2 XL to this and 4a is essentially the same, worse in screen and battery and IP rating, better in memory. Chipset is about the same for SD835 and SD730.

    So yer, no upgrade yet.

    • Well youre also comparing the top pixel to the budget pixel… But yeah pixels arent known for improving fast year on year

    • I think my 2XL needs the upgrade.

It's over 2 years old now.
Can still get around $150 resale value.

I don't know the differences between the Chipsets.
Surely 2 years means its better? right?

  • +1

Good price but can’t beat iPhone SE for longer support of minimum 5 years. I am using iPhone 7 which is almost 4 years old and now running on iOS 14 beta. I am quite happy that Apple supports their iPhone lineups for so long. iOS 14 runs at the same speed on my iPhone 7 compared to iOS 13.

    • +3

3+ years official updates for pixel, But you can update them even after that for lifetime using custom roms.

      • +2

We can do it for any popular phone.

    • iOS 13 and 14 run crap compared with iOS 8 on my iPad Air 2. Actually it’s the same with all iOS devices, the more updates you get the slower devices get.

  • +1

Advertising as "A lot of help, for less". It's only true in the US, you can get it for $349 (~490 AUD).

Retailing here for $599 AUD is just sad & greedy.

    • +2

Add tax to the comparison, then factor in the people cost differences in each country, economic scale in each, longer warranty and rights etc in AU. Works out to Not a huge difference in price.
When will people stop the basic USD v AUD price comparisons without factoring in the differences.
The USA market prices and AUD prices cannot be directly compared.

      • Every country has tax not just Australia. Not a huge difference? Sure
As long as people are willing to pay hiked up prices , why not i guess!

        • +4

But our prices are inclusive of any associated taxes, USA prices exclude them.

          • +2

            @swimmingtoad: I honestly don't get how people can't understand this simple concept…

      • They compare with current exchange rate… When Google will need to make a hedge, and probably set the prices earlier when the dollar was low sixty cents. If the Aud dollar loses future value, which it probably will then Australia will be paying a lower price than other countries.

    • +2

True we are getting ripped off

  • Very good for the price however it's around $50 more than the conversion to aud+gst. Shame that the other budget phones want to waste money on useless cameras instead of offerering more relavent stuff like better software support/better main camera. Imo, the only thing thats truly missing is a larger battery and a ultrawide.

    • True. I am very disappointed since I was waiting for this phone to upgrade.
This price range is actually for Mid range phones. Budget phones should be around 400!

  • Seemed just right for my mum issue is its still a month out… Surely its already been delayed too much to remain relevant hype will come this week and be gone once its available…

  • +1

    Yup, should be $550

No go for me… I've invested in wireless chargers

    • Yeah, that was my biggest disappointment here as well.

Wireless charging is one of those things you don't give up once you have it.

  • +1

3 months is pretty meh, they should've offered 12 months at least

  • +1

Who'd of thought a new phone would have caused such a debate.

  • Anyone have any knowledge of whether the Pixel 4a will come to different phone networks on a plan/contract? At $599, it would make for a pretty affordable month to month proposition.

  • -2

    Apple offer 12 months TV

    • +2

      ..with about 3 shows available.

  • Google should have priced this at AU$499 to match US$350 in value.

    • +2

US pricing does not included taxes, Australian pricing does.

      • +2

This is a painful thread to read.

  • This or Oppo Reno 5G?

  • Kinda glad I ended up not waiting for this and got an oppo A52 instead.

A bit out of my price range for a mid-ranger, especially with such a small battery.

    • +1

      Good phone for the price.

    • For those reading this, the Oppo A72 will be A$249 in 6 days

      • Optus locked, which is a pretty important caveat that should absolutely be noted.

  • +2

Best value Android phone that's under 6" and 150g? Spec-wise there's no doubt that you can pick up better phones (CPU, RAM, number of camera lens, etc) for less, but not at this size. Might wait for the price drop towards Christmas.

    • Agreed, after a few months, especially when the 5 and 4a 5g are announced, I would expect a few good deals on this phone flowing through OzBargain.

  • No water resistance making it disappointing for any accidents. That and the lack of a second lens irks me but otherwise looks good. No fast charging either though

    • The Pixel 4a supports fast charging…

      • On the website comparison VS 2XL it didn't mention fast charging

  • -1

Should be priced at $499. Specs are fine except a small battery. This phone should have come with at least a 4000mah battery.

    • +1

You expect it to be cheaper here than in the US? never going to happen without large currency changes

  • -1

Truly don't understand why people get so worked up on the one yr less of phone update…As if the phone would stop working normally. Shaking my head.

Should just go get Apple and let them update your phone and slow it down. Hey it's for your own good after all, it makes things "pro" whatever agenda they're selling.

Let Samsung regularly update their phones to shill you more ads.

Heck, let Chinese phones offer you a 20yr OS update/support so that they can "update" your details on their servers nightly.

    • -2

Software support wise Apple is the king. iPhones are definitely more costly than their Android counterparts. But if someone plans to use it for say 3-5 years then it pays itself in the long run with software support. I am using iPhone 7 on iOS 14 beta (which is 5th major software update since I purchased it) and no it hasn’t slowed my phone a bit. In some cases, it’s even faster than iOS 13. I also have Samsung Android phone but support wise it’s a joke compared to iPhone series.

      • -1

There’s plenty comparison on YouTube that show older iOS versions run faster than the new ones on older hardware. It’s debatable really about software support, I view it differently because iOS is feature poor in a lot respects compared with Android. To be king of support you would have to keep up with all the newest smartphone features software wise. Widgets are a new feature for iOS that Android has had for around a decade. I have iOS devices and I scratch my head sometimes at the features they haven’t implemented yet. The great PIP feature is finally coming… Actually I figured I can’t find an alternative to my Samsung phone because of Software. A feature like DeX will probably be implemented in Apple in the next decade. Android doesn’t lock you into needing to run the newest OS version to run most of the newest apps. It also doesn’t stop older apps and games working because you need to update your OS but the developer has abandoned support. I mean I have bought expensive games on my iPad that can no longer be played because of it. On Android you don’t need an OS updates to update the browser or store. Android OS and has made support for most the core functionality of devices possible with just simple store updates. It’s like an oranges and you know comparison. Hence the typical user not giving a toss about OS updates.

        • -1

“Hence the typical user not giving a toss about OS updates.” - Stronger disagree with your last sentence.

  • What's happening with the world? "Battery lasts up to 24 hours"… Wow! When did that become something positive when talking about smartphones, smartwatches and similar trackers?
Lasting 24 hours might be good for chewing gums, toothpaste protection, deodorants, sex… Not for smartphones… We are going backwards… They should be ashamed, omit the information, and hope it lasts more than that, which seems to be the case: https://www.androidpolice.com/2020/08/03/my-google-pixel-4a-…

  • +1

I don't see this mentioned by anyone here yet so thought I'd share:

If you're a Google One member, apparently you can get up to 10% back in Google Store credit. https://slickdeals.net/f/14243414-google-store-pixel-4a-pre-…
"Google One trial memberships and plan family members are not eligible."

  • one thing i haven't seen discussed is the fact pixel phones tend to go on discount within the first 2-3 months of release. i'll be buying it at $599 on release with my 28 degrees and then getting a refund of the difference when it inevitably goes on sale.

haven't noticed anyone mentioning this tactic so thought i'd share in case anybody is not sold on the $599 price tag. it's almost definitely going to get cheaper, and this way you don't have to wait for it to go on sale.

    • This is a great tip! I have a 28degrees card too but I always forget about this benefit! How long does the price difference guarantee apply for? Up to 1 year after the 28degress purchase, do you know?

      • Actually found the policy here: must be from the same retailer, must be done within 6 months of purchase and 28degrees charges 0.5 % of the monthly closing balance for this service: https://www.pointhacks.com.au/credit-cards/28degrees/

        • +1

that pointhacks page is outdated. the policy was updated in 2018 and is extended to 12 months, and applies with ANY retailer in Australia rather than only the retailer you purchased from. the 0.5% charge has been increased to 1% but all you have to do to avoid that is to credit your account with the amount prior to the statement being issued. i.e. manually pay into your account, which i plan to do even before i make the purchase to ensure i avoid the charge.

you can view the policy directly by logging into your online banking, under the Insurance section.

in essence, this means that you should use your 28 degrees to buy practically any electrical and electronics products since they depreciate and go on sale almost definitely within 12 months. especially with products that have an annual update cycle like phones, which depreciate a significant amount when a newer version is released.

          • @coldazure: This is GOLD - thanks a lot for this :-) Are you planning on buying/pre-order the 4a via the Google website now btw?

            • +1

@bukowski73: yes but i'm going to pre-order from jb hifi because i have some gift cards i need to use before they expire in november.

so another fyi here is 28 degrees also support proportionate purchases with your card. you'll just get proportionate benefits if you were to ever make any claims.

  • They've brought back the headphone jack!

  • If you do videos or video chat, note that the mic isn't great. People pointed this out with the 3a. Google didn't listen.

  • Probably would have pulled the trigger this if it wasn't for lack of wireless charging! Nightmode camera is an awesome feature to have for this pricepoint, forgive me if it's on another similar phone that I'm not aware of. I was really keen on the SE untill I found out no night mode!

  • Wondering how you guys are pre-ordering your 4a? Best way to do it via Google/JB Gift Cards?

  • +2

I've just preordered mine from JB.

The 3 month free stuff from Google didn't interest me as I'm not a mobile gamer and already have YouTube Premium through India.

It also seems that Google aren't shipping until 23 to 26th September whereas JB start from the 10th September.

Happy to pay $6 extra for earlier shipping that wait an extra 2 weeks from Google.

I'm moving to the 4a from a Mi 9T that I bought in the last OzB sale for $399 6 months ago.

While I like the phone, I've never been overly happy with the camera and now with the MIUI 12 update I do find it a little laggy in some areas especially the camera actually opening and being ready to take a photo. And I do find that the phone size itself a little big for my liking now. I thought I'd be ok going back to a bigger phone coming from an iPhone X (after many years of Plus size iPhones) but I've realised I'm a smaller phone person. One handed use is what I've missed.

I loved the size of the iPhone and so the 4a, being the same size, having a great camera and vanilla Android is the most appealing for me over any other brand of phone.

Sure, I guess it'll most likely go on sale in a few months once the 4a 5G and 5 go on sale but both will be more expensive than the 4a and I would have have the 4a for that extra time enjoying the one handed use and taking great photos of my kids for that time too. The ups and downs of early adopters.

    • Just wondering about this order. Were you able to use JB gift cards on the pre-order

      • +1

I didn't use gift cards but on checkout there was a filed to enter them IIRC.

The first lot of preorders have sold out it now says so second shipment is now due a week later.

        • Sorted. I ordered using JB Hifi gift cards. Works :)

      • Just went past Woolworths and saw they are doing a $100 and earn 2000 Woolworths Rewards points ($10) on Home Gift cards.
Had a JB Hifi Logo on there so potentially can stack with this deal for a nominal 10%~ off.

  • Off topic but any one ordered the cases for the phone? So far I've been juggling between a Dbrand custom one and this one from Bellroy.

    https://bellroy.com/products/leather-pixel-case/leather_pixe…

  • I'd imagine this phone will probably be selling for $350-$400 in a few months time. Unless you're desperate for it, it may be best to wait a few months. Pixels are very much in price discovery mode at the moment. With each new release being highly anticipated then just falling short.
