Move in Date to-Do List

Hi everyone,

My fiance and I just bought our first property. Our move in date is in 6 weeks. I just read some article about checking and taking a picture of the electricity meter on the move-in date. That makes me wonder if there's any other things we need to know or do when we're moving in, besides the obvious things like connecting gas, electricity, water and internet? We're young and inexperienced so we would really appreciate some pointers. Thank you very much.

If you own a strata unit then read the AGM minutes.
If you own the land, then get building insurance.
Either or, find out your rates notice.

Assume you have moved before so no need to repeat moving things.

    • Or being OzBargain, "accidentally forget" to arrange insurance and then come back for advice when items are stolen/damaged.

  • Plant pampas grass in the front yard, good luck plant

    • Great for hiding in too. Just don’t set it on fire by accident.

Pampas grass is an environmental weed

Get some spare bedsheets, Command (adhesive) hooks and a ladder to cover the windows for privacy.

For extra ghetto looks, use newspaper and tape instead.

In the UK step one after cross checking all plumbing is okay and taking meter readings, is changing ALL external door locks to brand new ones. Genuinely wonder if this is the norm here too?

    • Have the locks re-keyed. Usually much cheaper.

Take advantage of the empty house to get any painting or decorating done with no furniture in the way.

Or if you are feeling adventurous:

      Say hi to your bin.

      Find out every room.

      Christen every neighbour 😉

How bad is the neighborhood? If its a rough one its best to stage a domestic dispute on the front lawn.. ensure to use alot of screaming, a bit of throwing and atleast one knife. This will ensure the neighbors leave you alone..

Also being an ozbargainer, one should look for a fence, broken tree, barking dog, parked car, smoking neighbour, and start a neighbour conflict.

        • fence
        • broken tree
        • barking dog
        • parked car
        • smoking neighbour

        BINGO!

  • Surely you’ve lived in a property before you purchased one.

Get a lawn mower, vacuum, kettle, and toilet paper. Check under the house for leaks.

    • ideally, they should have checked for leaks BEFORE they purchased the house

    • moved into a high rise apartment, lawn mower is still in the box in the cupboard

  • Very important to make sure that wedding will push through.

Make sure you have got a through cleaning done to make sure you move into a space that is free of any pests or insects

  • Check that there isn’t anyone living in your walls, roof or under the stairs.
Get some sage and smudge the place to banish negative energy.
Salt ingress points to keep the evil out.
    Check there aren’t hidden cameras.
Go on social media and research other spoopy memes to scare yourself…

If you live near a public bbq you may not need to connect gas and/or electricity.

Hey dude, I bought my first house earlier this year, my conveyancer provided me with a checklist which I found helpful. Here is a copy of the items on it:
