Got the $599 OPPO 5G, turned on, updated, but still not SIMed/used [Boost is only 4G]

It is a heavy bugger the OPPO, not sure when i will start using it

Found the deal on the mighty OZB, purchased from Hardly Normal ex S/Aust.

Great story but what exactly does it have to do with the V50?

      • STILL on sale, better?? lower price, chose your poison

        More memory, less $$

or 566 on ebay check limited item quantity ebay thread

          • @CyberMurning: Hey,
what/where is the thread you are talking about? I mostly just browse or comment on the deal threads and wasn't able to find anything searching the forum. Cheers!

@xentar: Direct Link, you need to be a member of eBay Plus however.

              • @hamza23: I forgot to cancel Plus, and being outside coles delivery this is probably the first benefit. (Just ebay coles mind you; I get my groceries just fine >.<).

                Thanks for the heads up.

"Better" is subjective. I'm no advocate for the V50, I certainly don't think it's LG's best phone and the second screen is mostly a novelty but to compare the two, the LG has much better resolution, 558ppi vs 387ppi, is much lighter when not using the second screen, is IP68 rated, has Qi wireles charging, doesn't run ColorOS…. and then there's the quad DAC.

All the Oppo has going for it IMO is the 4% larger screen to body ratio (which isn't a benefit when the quality is below average). On board memory is also neither here nor there with both being expandable. The cameras may perform better/worse, no idea as I haven't compared them.

          • @whitelie: Hey, Thanks for the link.

You seem to have your finger on the pulse of the mobile market so would you mind offering any suggestions? I do have decent BT headphones so I could do without the jack but the reason I am still using my g6 and v30 after all this time speak to my preferences I guess.

I don't need 5g but think going to 6 or 8gb of RAM and moving to a decent SOC (frankly those LG phones were already outdated on release).

Any good resources would also be fantastic.

If you don't want to, no worries mate, didn't hurt to ask.

              @xentar: What sort of budget?

              • @whitelie: I used to grab flagships afer a sharp price drop or aim for mint 2nd hand tech 6-12 months old on tech forums (release windows are golden when some people upgrade every iteration and dont mind losing half value at all).

That didn't really answer the question sorry. My mobile saving are in a nice surplus so I would pay 1.5-2k 'if' it made sense but it doesnt seem to from what ive seen. 120hz and 5g dont make sense for me unless there are reasons they are good and not just a battery tax that I don't know of. I havent used dex since…I want to say the Note edge? and I didnt use it much. Hopefully google mixes the android and chromebook ecosystems to get a nice influx of apps for tablets/lite desktop replacements. I'll just carry a laptop until then.

So essentially I'd like to hit a pricepoint that represents both value without acrificing too much.

Again this wasnt the most coherent sentence so thanks for your time and perspective @whitelie

                • @xentar: If you're not fussed on the big names and don't want/need 5G maybe have a good look at the Oneplus 7T/7T Pro or the 8 if you do want 5G. I don't use one personally but they get great reviews every time. I can't even bring myself to spend 1500 on a phone!

      • they are both phones.

  • What is the second screen for? Is it when you are seated / at a desk. I presume it will be too problematic to have to carry around

    • +2

I don't use the second screen much (together they are 320g, it wont fit into the car cradle together etc, but find it can be useful for specific tasks e.g. when using Live Transcribe and copying the transcription into another document, it is useful to have both apps running full screen either side.
In Android 10, both screens can be used together e.g. in Google Maps which can be handy.
Also you can use the second screen to view youtube etc in landscape mode etc while the phone is on the desk and the main screen is asleep.
The actual screen connectivity technology is quite interesting - the pogo pins only power it, the display data is via Keyssa "KISS" 5.4Gbps high speed wireless link in the mm wave frequency spectrum. This tech would have been awesome for a proper Dex style docking station if someone could combine wireless HDMI like this with Qi wireless / PD charging and a USB hub.
As a comparison, cost down efforts for the G8x and v60 look much more agricultural, add bulk and require a weird magnetic USB-C extension etc.
Wireless charging still works with the cover on.

  • it's $699 now…

    • Wow that was quick

  • Didn't even know this was a deal ozb would care about.

I bought one yesterday as my spare phone. Paid under 600 after the 10% off unidays code.

    • Where did you buy it from? And is the unidays code student specific?.

      Thanks,

      • I got it from catch. The studentbeans code (sorry, got it mixed up with unidays) is accessible for anyone who has an account (requires edu email. ) Its unique to you though.
        here - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/540906

I bought it at 649 regular price + 10% off.

        • Ahh bugger, I don't have an edu email. Great deal for you though - nice work

          • @Gonltruck: you can request a code on the pinned thread in classifieds.

    • I mean studentbeans, not unidays. My mistake

  • Fark, missed it would have been below $500 after the 15% discounted Catch Gift Cards :(, waiting it to be back to $649

  • Hey have you noticed reception issues with LG? I've used LG from G2-G7, with my G7 I can't get 4g in major cbd areas.

Many times I have 1 bar when my wife's new samsung has 3. Her old LG G also had bad call/data reception.

    Even w/o a case.

    • I have no reception issue with LG G7 and LG V50. Even I am in a remote area. Petty good 4G reception both with Telstra and Optus

    • What network are you on?

  • I started getting 5G on Telstra Prepaid on the v50

    • Waiting for Boost to join the party…

  • I owned two LG V50. They are Korea and AU stock.
I have to say the V50 Telstra version OS updates much worst and very lag compare to Korea one

    • This isnt a telstra version. Its straight from LG
