'You Have My Number' (Job Interviews)

Hey OzB,

Had quite a few job interviews in the last few weeks, most of them have been trolls.

I'm not sure if its just a Corona thing or some new HR thing, but they all keep dropping hints to call them back…for some reason?
Keeps coming back as creepy.

Any input?

  • The internet slang term ‘troll’ has been around for many years. OP how have you successfully managed to avoid learning the meaning?

I have a long story about getting a job i was woefully unqualified for because i called back; do it OP; worst that can happen is a handy for HR behind the office!

    • Can you share some tips on emphasising us as a good candidate for the job?

Id say it boils down to enthusiasm; I have hired less skilled/qualified candidates who seem really keen to be there and 3 years later they are still top performers.

        • i have a story about a mate getting a job he was woefully unqualified for. just put your own spare mobile number down with a fake name as the reference. he got a job operating a river boat lock because of the outstanding referee.

    • handy..?

  • Absolutely no-one is doing interviews just for fun. It's a very time consuming process.

I'll often let the candidate know they can email me or call the person they were dealing with (normally HR) if they have any further questions etc. Not sure why you think they're trolling after they've interviewed you and let you know you can call them

  • basically they may want to see how much you want that job.
while they have time to decide on their end too.
if you are on the shortlist and you call up you might get the job on the call.

  • HR people whinge about workload, about applicants, about everything.

Are they not lucky they still have jobs in this covid19 era?

    Are they essential workers?

Society cant function without these people?

It's been a while… But last time I was interviewing for roles the number of times job agencies would represent a job they were not actually being paid to find a candidate for was extremely annoying. They often copy a real job ad they see to try and find a great candidate and then go back to the company who has actually advertised the job and try to get them to pay for that candidate… In the meantime the actual hiring agency for that job usually fills the role.

The other thing I noticed was many agencies would put out vague job ads with many opportunities. It's a technique to build their book of prospective candidates for future jobs they may have to recruit for. From people I spoke with who used to work in that environment the frequency of this increases a lot when an agency has less jobs to fill as their staff have quotas to fill.

I got so angry with it after a while I only applied for jobs where the company themselves were doing the recruiting to stop wasting time and money on all these applications where they were not even the authorised recruiter.

Some HR speak and their meanings:
    - we will get back to you = rejected
    - you don’t have enough experience = boss round was awful
    - you have my number = CV said you were good/good fit but seems like you are not.
    - leave it with me - I found you awesome let me push you to next rounds.
