Recommend Desktop PC ($5000) + Monitor ($2000)

I need to get a home workstation. Work is paying for it.

Please recommend a Desktop PC which includes Wireless Keyboard Mouse + 3 yr Warranty + MS Office + Webcam - Budget $5000

32-34 Inch Monitor - Budget $2000

No real specification that I am after. With that amount of budget go crazy and recommend me the best you got.

Mainly will be used for medical software which loads heavy CT scans and MRI for reporting. Loading these does not require any major processing power. A refurb Dell Opliplex would do a great job at it. I will be connecting two additional medical grade monitors with the CPU. I also plan on doing some photoshop/after effects on it as well. No gaming.

Its going to look decently good sitting on the desk. Didn't want a standard box type CPU. That is why I chose Alienware Aurora.

This is what I managed to create: Is it any good?

  • Can you tell us what your workstation is used for and what will it spend the majority of it's time running? Software / task etc

If you are just buying whatever fits into that collosal $5k budget you will either end up buying something that's overkill for the need or not properly configured for the software you intend to run.

Sounds like you found a golden ticket and don't even like chocolate. $5000 can build an absolute unit, even with COVID pricing.

        • Hospital gives this every two years. Been getting it for atleast 10 years. Except this year they give us additional budget for monitor.

          • @Aap Ke Papa: If you get to build a new machine every two years and keep the old one(?), then resale value (including of components) is something you can consider, as Presence suggested.

@Aap Ke Papa: And that's where our tax dollars go…

Surely this is in control of an IT department otherwise it would be the wild west out there…

          • @Aap Ke Papa: Presumably a salary packaging benefit? So you're still contributing to the cost but it's tax free, right?

You would want at minimum an SSD for good pre caching of images plus a Quadro card in case there's any 3D CT/MRI but at $5000 that's extremely easy.

If you're going pre-built HPZ series or Dell Precision - Edit, fit for purpose but will be a normal box.

I appreciate they have their purpose but that $4700 HP has 16GB RAM and and 512GB ssd. It's terrible value if you aren't using the benefits of the CPU!!

If his work is paying he should get something that can be sold second hand easily IMO.

      • Yeah that's the first one I found under 5k so OP shouldn't buy that one specifically, it would be better to customise it with i7/9 variant.

        • The HP G series is quite bulky. What do you think of the Aurora. The specs I selected combined with the Affiliate discount code makes it just $16 over budget including Webcam/mouse/keyboard/warranty.

          • +1

@Aap Ke Papa: The aurora is fine as well, as long as you're not doing 3D imaging.

Microsoft® Office Home and Student 2019

Keep in mind that Home and Student does not allow commercial use. If your work provides O365, use that. If not, I'd suggest getting 365 anyway, but if you really must have a non-sub version then you need Home and Business or Professional if you use it for work.

If you're sure you're not gaming, you're also probably better off getting something from Dell or HP's workstation lines as they are generally more reliable in the long run.

Given the large budget, I'd consider replacing the HDD with a large SSD. Hell, get more drives so you have a destination for backups.

    • I'll change that to business office.

  • Does it have to be prebuilt?

    • Nope.

      • What type of Job is this if you don't mind me asking? Not really for the benefit of getting a great PC as a bonus but sounds quite interesting…

  • Perhaps consider the dell 4320Q monitor. I have 2 - they are great (depending on your preferred aspect ratio).

    • Yes. I did look at that but decided it might be too big as I already have two 32 inch medical monitors on my desk in addition to the Standard monitor. It does look like a stunning monitor.

Holy shit don't buy anything custom built for work purposes.

Just buy a business laptop and a docking station with 5 years warranty. Stuff desktop PCs if you're not gaming, programming/CAD or doing heavy duty video editing. You're a doctor so I doubt you'll need all that beef in the Alienware and probably doing amateur photoediting.

Since you've got cash to blow, buy a Dell Precision with a USB C docking station and HP Medical Grade Monitors or just get the Z models for accurate colour (I've got one, they're great!).

    https://www.dell.com/en-au/work/shop/workstations/precision-…

Probably get it for cheaper using business or through the health department if you work in government.

The HP healthcare monitors do not meet the requirements we have. I use the barco 6MP monitors. They have to meet certain standards specially when reporting Mammograms in terms of uniformity of contrast/luminance and bit depth. They are extremely expensive costing nearly $19,000 each. Another good yet very expensive monitor is EIZO RX850 costing in excess of $20k

It has to be a desktop as per buying conditions.

Plus our reporting setup is like a gamers setup looking at multiple monitors at the same time. So a desktop suits better as we sit on the desk for long hours dictating.

I don't know who stipulated those buying conditions but a laptop can power multiple monitors too.
Everyone at my workplace (and every workplace i have ever worked at as an engineer) except the Mac Pro users have laptops with a docking station, even the hardcore video editors. The desktop PC doesn't really offer you anything that a laptop doesn't. An RTX2070 is just so unnecessary. You can still use a 3 monitor setup.
If I was you, I would get this setup:

        https://www.dell.com/en-au/work/shop/business-laptops-ultrab…

        https://www.dell.com/en-au/work/shop/accessories/apd/210-arp…

        https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-ultrasharp-32-ultra-hd-…

I don't know anything about your monitor requirements so I'll leave that to you but I put the link there for the one you wanted. HP also have their Z range monitors for 'precise colour' if you're looking for options.

Please recommend a Desktop PC which includes Wireless Keyboard Mouse + 3 yr Warranty + MS Office + Webcam - Budget $5000

I'm afraid a wireless keyboard and mouse will make your PC go over the budget.

    • Logitech Brio Ultra HD Pro Webcam - $308
      Aurora Desktop - $4562
      Dell Premier Wireless KB/Mouse - $145
Incl 3 Yr Onsite Warranty + MS Office
      Total $5015

      Dell UltraSharp UP3216Q 31.5" Monitor incl 5 yr pro warranty - $1860

    In brief:

    AMD Ryzen 9 3900X
    32GB 3200Mhz RAM
Samsung 970 Pro 1TB NVME SSD
    Seagate Ironwolf Pro 6TB HDD
    Coolermaster ML240 Liqiud Cooler
    Asus GTX 1660 6GB
Dell U4919DW 49.0" Curved Widescreen Monitor
    Windows 10 Pro

~$4.7K so you've got a bit spare for peripherals if you want new ones.

  • Wow, your workplace is generous!

  • amd 3600 with whatever cheap motherboard/ram/ssd you can get on here

    • Followed by 2 x 2080 Ti in SLI to meet the budget :P

  • Too much money not enough DIY

  • If coolness is the main factor, custom water cooling loop desktop should be the one..Ask around in the local area who willing to build with on-site support will be the best …
