Despite the Breville being a better choice I'm pretty sure this would still give a fine enough grind. The scientists suggest that coarser is better and my experimentation agrees. I have my Breville on a 24 setting out of 60 (60 being most coarse) and am pulling much better shots than when I had it between 16-20. Anything less than 16 and I was struggling to get a shot.

I have this grinder and use the finest settings and still have to use a pressurised basket with my breville bambino. I regret buying this even though it was a lot cheaper at around $100.
I generally grind on setting 2 and use non-pressurised basket on the dedica… Not sure what issues your having, but mine makes a nice drop with good crema.
@NigelTufnel: Speaking of crema, here's an interesting take on whether or not it is a consistent hallmark of a good shot of coffee.
Tldr, good coffee will likely have crema depending on the bean/grind, not all coffee with crema is necessarily good though.

exactly what i got. when i used an unpressurised basket there's hardly any crema at all even at its finest setting.

Using double pressurised basket, I am using approx 17g coffee 13.8sec, 12 grind, tamping to approx 20lbs, and get about 36g of espresso in 23 seconds.

@ozhunter68: Ha ha yes I love coffee and coming from instant… It's great. Didn't think I was being very technical ha ha. I don't care much about the exact taste, but when my wife and friends drink it I want them to enjoy it. So doing my best to find something that suits.
Yes it was a struggle to convince the boss to buy one.Just to add I don't actually measure beans etc, I'm just hoping the 13.8 sec is consistently giving me 17g

I started on a 14 grind but slowly moved up and am now on 24 and it's a far nicer taste than when I had it finer plus I save on beans. I'm getting coffees extremely close to my favourite cafes in Sydney. I'm using the Little Marionette House Blend.
@C0mbat: Wow crazy! If you are on 24 how many ml do you get? I would get over 250 I think. How old is your machine? Mine is new so wondering whether it wears over time? I am using airjo coffee beans enterprise
@leeroys_dad: I don't know exactly but it's probably about 50-60ml. There's no way you would get 250ml. I would barely get more than 100ml without the porter filter attached. My machine and grinder are both 12 months old. You should try a coarser grind as an experiment.
@leeroys_dad: yeah i pull 180ml with 22 gms and top up the mug with frothy milk …..about the size of x-large espresso at cafe but much cheaper ….
@garage sale: @carleast: interesting - i have changed my tamping pressure to be more consistent (I just press down hard about 20lbs) and so i did this with grind 22 - barely any difference (about 60ml). Interestingly though, i did weigh the beans after tamping and scraping and it was 17g - the same weight as my beans on grind 12. so this method saving on beans i can't really see how?
i think the pressured basket would be stabilising the extraction - suits me fine!
i think tamping pressure is the single biggest variable that changes an extraction massively from shot to shot
Taste wise on grind 22 i will have to check with my wife in a few days time when she is home. to me it tasted very similar but i do not have the best buds :)

My understanding is it's essentially impossible for a human to tamp with too much pressure. You just want to reach close to maximum density (I think it's about the point where the grounds don't fall out when flipped). Consistency after that point doesn't really matter.
But what's most important is that it is level after tamping.@NigelTufnel: i actually just got my bathroom scales and read the figures while i did different tamping pressures… worked out kind of pushing 'normal hard' until it stops compacting is about 20lbs. but i can compact 5lbs to 20lbs and the puck doesn't fall out, but i have widely inconsistent shots coming out (too fast usually).
but the difference say from 15-25lbs is very small so i figured that is the better pressure rather than 5-10lbs range which is inconsistent
I roast my own beans and change grind size depending on the bean and type of roast. There is no general setting for the perfect espresso but if it can't achieve a fine grind you're out of luck when you need it…
What a useless article. These guys who had some friends who worked in a coffee shop have just undone a hundred years of coffee tradition with this one simple step. Baristas hate them!

It may be efficient (whatever that means) but there are so many other components to a good espresso, such as smell, taste, caffeine strength, crema, the list is long. And last I checked, Oregon was nowhere near the pinnacle of good espresso.

I'm the same, in the range of 22-24 depending on the roast age and the beans with an 8.4s grind. Might not be ideal but it's what works for me and my machine based on trial and error

It often goes on special, but I bought it at Bing Lee for $220 this week, which by Oz bargain standards is waayyyyy over priced 😉.
But I felt bad for the store during COVID and was keen to get my hands on it.
If you go in and negotiate you could probably get it for about that.
Yep, there's really no point getting this when the most you'll pay for thr Breville is $199. It comes down to $170 a few times a year.

I made the mistake of buying this one, sold it on gum-tree and got a Breville Smart Grinder Pro which has been pretty great so far.
I had one of these. Gave it to my mum and bought a Breville Smart Grinder Pro. The BSGP is much better.
had it myself for a year+ at the cost of under 100 from an Amazon deal.
personal experience: not recommended for espresso because the grind is not fine enough, even at its finest level.
