Nothing else compares in this genre of movies. Almost shocking for its era.
A landmark, the music, the 60's culture, the philosophy, the optimism of the space race period, references to the HAL 9000 are used elsewhere. A total experience of high quality movie making.
Years later, I still hold this as one of the best movies ever made.

Yep, agree. One of the greatest films ever made. Kubrick was a genius.
As the joke has it, NASA wanted him to film / fake the moon landing, but Kubrick insisted on doing it on location. (Stick that to all the nutjob conspiracy theorists!)
