(Solved) Can You Get Refund if You Bought a Wrong mobile voucher from supermarkets like Coles and Woolworths?

Hi folks,

A few days ago, I bought a Boost mobile voucher from Coles supermarket, I needed a 12-month one but I mistakenly purchased one which expires in 6 months. I went back to the supermarket to exchange for a correct one which I need to pay extra. I was initially told that I could just get a refund for the wrong one then get a new voucher but it was late so I was advised to come the next day.

On the next day, I went to Coles again and the branch manager bluntly told me that she couldn't issue me the refund nor exchange for me. She said it is Coles' policy or whatever it is. I didn't want to argue with her so I just left.

I understood that I could get a refund for the item which I haven't used or made any damages according to the Australian Consumer Law. I could be wrong so I would love to hear from everyone here. Can you guys tell me if I could get the refund/exchange in this particular product?

Have a great weekend,

Thank you

Thank everyone for answering my question and I appreciated that.

As like a folk mentioned in the comment below, I also got my voucher refund by a different staff when visited the store again today. The staff was advised to issue me the refund by the first one whom I met on my first visit and who seems also to be a manager/supervisor at the store. Indeed, it depends on whom you meet.

I was actually fine to keep the voucher and use it in my next recharge if I was simply told it is not refundable but just that the store manager was too rude. When I told her the other staff told me that she could actually contact Boost to get the voucher refunded for me, she said she is the manager so what she said is what it has to be (wtf). After I didn't care who she is even she repeatedly claimed that she is the store manager, she bluntly brought up that it is Coles' policy. When I asked her to show me the policy, she asked me to call the Coles Customer Service number.

As like many folks pointed out in the comments, partially it was my fault as I wasn't aware that mobile voucher is not refundable :). Though, I have no intention to argue with the store manager if she was a bit more polite. Who on earth cares of who she is when one just wants to buy something at the store. It appears to me that anyone could be a store manager at Coles supermarket.

I’m pretty sure gift vouchers can’t be refunded.

  • Sorry mobile voucher is like gift card, no refund.
To make it worst, under the pandemic Coles has stopped all change of mind return.

No, unfortunately. Try the OzBargain classifieds: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/classified

I understood that I could get a refund for the item which I haven't used or made any damages according to the Australian Consumer Law.

    Then you have "misunderstood"…

Under ACL you are only able to get a refund if the items is not as described (it was advertised as sphere, you got a cube), not fit for purpose (you asked for something that will do X, but it only does Y) or faulty (doesn't work). Change of mind or purchased in your error is not covered under ACL and would be covered by in store manager and on good will only.

The fact that only the 3rd comment points this out shows how widespread this misunderstanding is. Scary.

Or the fact that people don't ready the entire post, so didn't get that far.

contact Boost customer service, may be they can help you with some pro-rata plan

    • Or you may be able to combine a 2nd voucher into one. I'd have it in writing first.

I've done this for Telstra previously

Please read the refund section again, under ACL they say no refund is required to be offered for 'change of mind'. Which your refund is.

No you can't. Just use the voucher and buy the correct one in 12 months time.

Usually the recharge voucher's code is visible on the receipt. Coles won't be able to check whether that voucher has been used or not. Therefore, they won't be able to give a refund.

I got my Boost voucher refunded at Woolies last year. Guy at Customer Service said I had to leave the voucher with him as he couldn't do right away as he would have to call up or log on to a system to check the balance before processing the refund for me. I hesitated, but agreed in the end having taken a photo of my voucher and his name. Went back in 45 minutes and got my refund.

I'm curious as to how you came to that conclusion. From guessing?

  • I worked at Coles (10 years ago) and we could refund mobile vouchers if they weren't used. There was a number we would call to confirm if they had been used or not.
