  • glad to see doctors getting free coffee and a burger.

Yeah man they're getting hit the hardest.. Job seeker getting em by

      • -5

I feel sorry for them. Imagine earning 200k$ per year and only to get "small" coffee. Not really fair.

        • +29

I’m a healthcare worker; 7 years of study and on <$60K.

This site has a superiority complex when it comes to doctors, despite (statistically speaking) a large % of people being desk monkeys or working artificially created jobs on higher salaries than these healthcare workers.

          • @Strahany: what did you study? What field are you in? Full time? <$60k for 7 years study is nuts.

Did you do part time study?

            • +10

@Andard: Full time, Allied Health field. Minimum entry requirements for my field is a Bachelor - some offer 3 years but most have mandatory honours components which take it to 4 years.

People single out healthcare practitioners as if they’re all on ridiculous money. The extreme difficulties of the course + the debt + high stress (minimal room for error as you can’t really “proof read” your work with a person’s life) and the ongoing learning required throughout your career. Not to mention that the roles which might barely be deemed lucrative require post-grad studies.

Sure, high-patient number GP’s and your top end surgeons can be very comfortable, but it takes a long time and a lot of stress, so I don’t disparage them for earning what they do.

Plenty of fields add far less “value” to society, easier entry, less stress, less ongoing work required, etc but earn far more. I suspect it might have something to do with very poor unionisation and strike action amongst the workforce. If, say, builders go on strike, then they can twist the arms of people making considerable money to hand over a greater %. Conversely, if healthcare workers strike, then that could result in actual death or, at least, prolonging suffering and disability. Most of us would never strike since we care too much about the quality of care for patients.

@Strahany: I also work in healthcare, and my colleagues frequently take industrial action at being asked to do what their contracts literally require. There has been zero risk from covid, yet people earning hundreds of thousands are handed freebies while the admin people on the very front line get (profanity) all, and get shat on by allied health, nurses and doctors. The fact that these deals often single out who is eligible and focus solely on the higher paying jobs that require uni is offensive. What about a cleaner? An orderly? The person on the front desk? They get paid (profanity) all, treated like dumbdumbs and can’t even get a coffee with most of these deals. And before you do the “but I studied omg”. I’ve spent the equivalent of 6 years at uni, with honours and am in an entry level admin job. So shut up with your “over inflated wages” garbage. I know plenty of other grads who’ve had to stay in entry level roles because shock horror, “jobs and growth” was a lie. Don’t act like because you are lucky that everyone else is too.

Be grateful that if your parents get COVID and ended up in ICU, they are risking their lives saving them. There is a reason why they are getting paid 200k and not you.

          • +1

@CheapestSkate: You could have acknowledged the other important people in the medical process, but instead chose to play an emotional card. I’ll be grateful to all those involved, including the people on the computers, the people appropriately disposing of used PPE, cleaning the ward and other equipment. People who are just as much at risk, but as with you, never acknowledged and largely on low salaries. Acknowledging someone’s work is free. It’s a bargain. Consider that next time my dude.

Bit of an oxymoron … Healthcare worker eating a Maccas cheeseburger.

    • +2

If the healthcare workers are taking care of the unhealthy, who is taking care of the healthcare workers?

      • -5

        Their salary.

  • +1

A "small" coffee seems rather miserly.

    • +1

Or you can get a "medium" soft drink! How generous!

    • +2

seriously, you've already made the coffee. 99.9% of the effort is already done.. why not just make it a large

      • +1

Yep. The cost of the coffee must be minimal between a small and say medium. I get giving away a “free” small coffee to a usual customer, but even as a “token”, surely thanking a health care worker deserves a bit extra!

    • +1

Yeah offering a small coffee is a dick move. Just make it large (soy inc) and do a good deed, not just a sad attempt at advertising.

  • +2

What is Lyster Inc. (who made the post)?

One comment on the post: "Spoke with my local Frankston store-they said they could honour a small coffee for health care workers but not a medium or cheeseburger."

    • +1

Their instagram bio and this article suggests that Lyster Inc. runs several Maccas stores in Wangaratta, Yarrawonga, Cobram, Shepparton, Shepparton North, Mooroopna & Swan Hill.

Someone asked the important questions 'Why is this not on the McDonald's website? and 'Is it ALL Victorian restaurants' to which Lyster Inc. replied 'it’s a Victorian Restaurant only offer' and 'follow post above is link'. I'm not sure what that means but I couldn't find any link…

      • Could just be group under that management

  • +3

It's a nice gesture. Thank you to all the healthcare workers for taking care of us in our worst of times.
We will get through this! <3

    • +2

      Username checks out.

  • +1

Thanks, will swing past after my shift in the Covid Ward

  • Lol, working in a COVID screening clinic atm. Will pick up a cheeseburger after work

  • I contribute nothing to society! Where's my free cheeseburger?

    • Shouldn’t you be then getting $1k+ a fortnight - that’s a lot of cheeseburgers my friend!

  • -5

This is so wrong. If they are dealing with covid everyday, wouldn't they be at a higher risk of transmitting it.

    • +4

Have you heard of this thing called PPE? Maybe you should look it up

    • +3

Not all healthcare workers deal with COVID. I'm a healthcare worker and I don't even deal with patients.

  • Can’t think of anything healthier for a health care worker
    😔

  • At least they guy with his nurse uniform has another use !

  • What about all the healthcare workers current in mandatory isolation? How can they take advantage of this?

  • +1

McDonald's giving free coffee and cheeseburger, and people still complaint?
    Salty people…

  • Any deals getting around on cheap scrubs?

  • Looks like staff don't know about? At least the ones in Clayton maccas. They wouldn't give it to me today :/ they claim they haven't received any info

    • Wangaratta, Yarrawonga, Cobram, Shepparton, Shepparton North, Mooroopna & Swan Hill only.

    • Did you ask for a manager ?

      • ah damn, looks like it's select stores only as others have now mentioned. the poor worker was a bit flustered so I didn't bother pressing. Oh well

  • +3

I emailed McDonald's Australia and they confirmed that the deal applies to all Victorian restaurants.

Thank you for contacting McDonalds Customer Service.
Yes you are correct, all VIC McDonald's restaurants are doing this for our Health Care workers, though a ID card must be presented or being in uniform to redeem the offer.
