Upgrade AmEx Qantas Discovery to AmEx Qantas Ultimate & Receive 40K Bonus QFF Points with a 3K Spend in 3 Months ($450 Fee)

70

Targeted offer to existing lower tier Amex Qantas card holders.

Receive 40,000 bonus Qantas points when upgrading to the Amex Qantas ultimate card.

I got this offer when logging into my account to check the new Amex cashback deals. Therefore if you hold a lower tier Amex Qantas card it might be worth logging in to see if you get the offer.

I've always just dropped to the fee free Amex Qantas card after a year with the ultimate card rather than cancel (as i like the Amex deals + shop small) and wait 18 months to get the occasional 100K bonus points offer and have found that after 3-6 months of being on the free discovery card I always get an offer to upgrade with a bonus point incentive.

Thought it might be useful for those who have a lower tier card to log in and see if they've got the offer.

Usual benefits, the main one being the $450 credit with Amex travel to spend on Qantas which offsets the annual fee. This doesn't have to be used (to book) until the anniversary of the card so you can wait until mid 2021 to book the flight.

  • "Usual benefits, the main one being the $450 credit with Amex travel to spend on Qantas which offsets the annual fee"

It's not quite that simple - for example, if you can only find a Qantas flight for $600 that another airline will sell you for $300 then you're not coming out ahead…

Absolutely, you might be able to fly Jetstar for cheaper.

I tend to use the credit for a weekend away with the missus (without the kids) so it's more of a treat to fly with QF. It also means that you can then use some points to upgrade. I used the credit on a Sydney weekend last year and upgraded the flight to business using my qf points on the A330. Went down well with the missus (she didn't even realise we were in business till she took her seat). Therefore when we got to our Sydney hotel , i came out ahead……trust me ;-)

Annual fee is a deal breaker here for me…

    so high fee…

Holding a QF Discovery at the moment but I think I will wait until travel can happen again. Which might not be for quite a while.

    • As i mentioned, if you get the card now you only need to book your flight by July 2021, you can at that time book a flight which will take place in June 2022.

you're very optimistic, unless the oxford vaccine or similar got approved by end of this year, I don't think anyone can even get out of the country without a valid reason (holiday and getting wedded are not) by end of next year

        • June 2022 is 2 years away so is that really optimistic?

The credit can also be used on domestic flights. You could use it now (if you're in a COVID free state)……

  • Where did you find it in when you logged into your account?
But when I clicked through the deal and in T + C.
    1. Bonus & Eligibility. Offer only available to existing American Express Card Members who apply online to upgrade to the American Express Qantas Ultimate Card by 31 August 2020, are approved, and spend $3,000 on their new Card in the first 3 months from the Card approval date. 40,000 bonus Qantas Points will be awarded to the eligible Card Member’s account 8-10 weeks after the spend criteria has been met.

And I can apply through to upgrade when i click the deal link when i've logged in to my amex account, just can't find where you've found the offer. so just seems like anyone with a discovery card?

    • When i logged in it flashed up on the screen ahead of me seeing my usual account info page. It also appeared in the banner on the right hand side of the window as you scroll down.

Yes it could well be available to anyone with a discovery card. I thought it safer to mark as targeted though as i wasn't 100% that anyone could get it.

  • How much can you sell 40000 points for these days anyhow?

    • +1

Not sure but generally about 1c per point when normality resumes.

  • thanks op i clicked on the link and logged on and had the same offer. i rather accept a upgrade offers then doing another application. i always downgrade when annual is due too. does anyone know if i downgrade after 3 months and getting the bonus points do you know if they will pro rata refund the annual fee?

    • No Chance is my bet.

  • How often does a deal like this come around?

i'm contemplating upgrading from my discover, since i would like to keep 1 card open (potential to use AMEX as my main card, but 450 is pretty rough)

  • +1

It varies. The first time I downgraded I got an upgrade offer 6 months later. The 2nd time I got an offer 3 months later.
