eBay Seller Requesting I Pay Return to Sender Fee despite Correct Address

Hi all, I’m in a bit of a stalemate with the seller.

I made a purchase as an eBay plus member during an promo for members, the item was meant to be express shipped however it didn’t arrive so I contacted the seller… and got no response, so I tried twice more over the course of a week. The the item was RTS seller says that it’s because the address wasn’t correct, but I’ve had plenty of things delivered to the address with no issues. Tracking says there were 2 attempted deliveries but in the incorrect suburbs.

They’ve given me 2 options. Pay RTS and they resend. Or they refund me, I pay RTS and the initial delivery cost.

Honestly I just want my item for the price I paid. I have been back and forth with the seller asking if they can put in a ticket with Auspost to refund the RTS fee. They’ve been slow to reply and unhelpful, they’re adamant that I pay the RTS either way but I’m not at fault here. Ebay plus has suggested that I speak to Auspost and I’ve put a ticket in with them. Is there any way that I can avoid paying the RTS fee and still receive my item? It seems rather unfair that I’m now out of pocket and the only options that I’ve been given is pay the fee and get the item or pay the fee + delivery costs and get nothing.

Edit: just to clarify, the address I entered is correct, however tracking provided has the attempted delivery in the wrong suburbs.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Ask for pics of the postage label. You could pinpoint if there is any mistake.

Is it fair that the seller should be out of pocket and the only options they have is repay for shipping to get the sale, or where the costs incurred to date and get no sale?

Sellers problem. They can deal with austpost and ebay "" if the item was addressed clearly "" ?
Why should a customer be responsible for the errors of others?

      • Sellers problem

So its the Sellers problem that the OP might have entered their own address wrong?

As a 'seller' myself, now the item is back, I would refund and move on. Not worth the 'hassle' of dealing with people who can't get their own addresses right.

        • If OP entered the address wrong then no, but if auspost or the seller made the mistake then it's the sellers beef with auspost to sort out

@SgtBatten: Hard to say at this point. Only the OP and seller know. The OP hasn't been clear if the right address was used, so based on this fact not being clear, I'm guessing it wasn't.

The the item was RTS seller says that it’s because the address wasn’t correct, but I’ve had plenty of things delivered to the address with no issues

This statement says the seller said the address was wrong hence why it was RTS and well the OP isn't saying the address was right or wrong just they have had parcels to that 'address' combo before.

Tracking says there were 2 attempted deliveries but in the incorrect suburbs.

I've got a feeling the OP has the wrong suburb on the address.

Anyhow my view as a 'seller' is

If the address was wrong, then seller should cancel/refund and move on.

If the address was right, then the seller should cancel/refund and move on anyhow. Too much 'hassle' to chase auspost down for a credit, and the seller runs the risk of it being RTS again, so out MORE money. As a seller you quickly learn to stop wasting good money after bad on some sales and just cut your loss.

            • @JimmyF: my only additional throught is that if it was ausposts fault surely you could take it to the PO and they resend it free

            • @JimmyF: Sorry I forgot to put it in the actual post, the address is correct, seller says that they have the same address that I provided. So I don’t see how it even went to the wrong suburb tbh.

If the seller stuffed up then yes, it is fair.

If AusPost stuffed up then bit of a grey area, but doesn't make much sense. If the buyer has received multiple items without issue before, then it's much more likely the seller just stuffed it up somehow.

    • I’m not expecting this, I had spoken to the seller about requesting for the fee to be refunded if it is indeed an auspost issue

  • "Tracking says there were 2 attempted deliveries but in the incorrect suburbs."
Do a screen copy of that before they remove it. That is your undisputable proof. Hit austpost, ebay and the seller with a copy and tell them that you are NOT responsible for any costs incurred.
Also ask the seller for a pic of the package showing the address.

  • Could be an Aus Post error. I’ve had an item go to a different state (same suburb name) and had to get it rerouted back. Took an extra week, when I got the item my address on the label was correct.

  • If you ring up Auspost, it's better than online. They should be able to track it in more detail with you on the phone. You can then get some proof of incorrect delivery emailed, so you can forward that to the ebay seller.

  • How much is RTS?

    • Depends on the item, small parcel is $9, larger is $13 if they used the flat rate satchels. More if using own box etc.

    • They’re saying it’s $24

  • Please ask for the postage label on the top of the parcel, it is most likely seller issue.

You do know these things are 'automatic'?

As a ebay seller myself, I click print postage label button, and one pops out the printer. I don't enter the buyers address in at all. It uses the address YOU as the buyer supplies to ebay/paypal during the checkout process.

As part of the seller 'payscam' err paypal protections I have to ship to the address entered in to paypal/checkout.

So to say its a 'seller' issue, is highly unlikely, more of a buyer issue.

If I ship to a address you entered incorrectly during the checkout, then that isn't my issue to clean up.

      • I believe seller have a choice not to use the automatic

Sometime seller send using PayPal address and it may be different from the eBay address as it can be change when making the payment

Seller may not be using the postage label, they can send by themself or they can be drop shipping.

If buyer supply the correct address then it will likely to be the seller.

So without the postage label being used, no one can sure which party make an error. Certainly, seller should response to the buyer and realise the Suburb Australia post may be wrong before the second delivery attempted.

        • I believe seller have a choice not to use the automatic

You can do a manual shipping, but WHY?!

Using the auto method, I can have a item in a bag with a postage label ready to drop at auspost by the time I find and read the buyers address doing it manually.

Sometime seller send using PayPal address and it may be different from the eBay address as it can be change when making the payment

          As above, I said

As part of the seller 'payscam' err paypal protections I have to ship to the address entered in to paypal/checkout.

ebay tells you to ship to the PAYPAL address if paid by paypal.

Seller may not be using the postage label, they can send by themself or they can be drop shipping.

Dropshipping is 100% automatic, the 'drop shipping software' will pickup all the details entered by the buyer in ebay and place the order using them.

If buyer supply the correct address then it will likely to be the seller.

99% sure they didn't supply the correct address, hence why that wording was left out of the post :)

no one can sure which party make an error.

As a ebay seller myself, I can guess who made the error, anyone shipping regularly does not do things 'manually' unless its a bulky item, but even that you can do automagically. I ship a handful of items a week, printing the label is 100% automatic and up to the buyer to know their address, not me.

Certainly, seller should response to the buyer

They are. The seller IS responding and has given two choices, full refund or pay shipping again to have it shipped to the CORRECT address.

          • @JimmyF: The correct address confirmation was left out of the actual post because I put it in the title, but I’ve updated now

Open an INR. You'll win and get a full refund. Use the refund to buy the item again.

    • Didn't read the post?

The seller has offered two choices, full refund or pay shipping to have it shipped to the CORRECT address this time.

      • I did.

They’ve given me 2 options. Pay RTS and they resend. Or they refund me, I pay RTS and the initial delivery cost

This sounds like the seller wants OP to pay for the RTS no matter the option. The latter includes both the RTS and the express shipping.
