I also have difficulty understanding why I would spend nearly extra $300 to replace my Mi box. Is the AI 4k really that good to give us a 4k TV streaming experience?
lol I tried the ai upscale on the shield and it really makes barely any difference, I ended up just turning it off.
Yep, I turned the AI upscale off too. I watch a lot of native 4K content via Netflix and 4K Blu-Ray and the results look nothing alike. Just an over-sharpened mess. It is however, a very powerful, lag free, play everything experience, and it streams games flawlessly from your gaming PC (which is what NVIDIA actually make these for, the media playback is secondary).
@BradH13: It's obviously not as good as native 4k. That feature is meant more for HD/FHD content you've got laying around to give them a little 'oomph'. It does do that pretty damn well. In my experience having it on medium was the sweet spot. That enhancing feature also helps when you're on a limited connection, 720p content from YouTube for example with AI enhanced looks much nicer on a 4k TV.
@allabtbrgnz: I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think it looks worse. Just because something is sharp doesn't mean it looks better. Half the things it sharpens aren't supposed to be sharp. I'm someone who calibrates every display I buy for accuracy though so that probably says how hard I am to please AV wise.
Xbox can do much more for about the same price
Yes but no
Why is there so many deals for the Shield lately?
Because they're racing to push them out before people realize the emperor is naked.
I didn't get that comment but I'm up voting you because it made me smile

"Plot
Two swindlers arrive at the capital city of an emperor who spends lavishly on clothing at the expense of state matters. Posing as weavers, they offer to supply him with magnificent clothes that are invisible to those who are stupid or incompetent. The emperor hires them, and they set up looms and go to work. A succession of officials, and then the emperor himself, visit them to check their progress. Each sees that the looms are empty but pretends otherwise to avoid being thought a fool. Finally, the weavers report that the emperor's suit is finished. They mime dressing him and he sets off in a procession before the whole city. The townsfolk uncomfortably go along with the pretense, not wanting to appear inept or stupid, until a child blurts out that the emperor is wearing nothing at all. The people then realize that everyone has been fooled. Although startled, the emperor continues the procession, walking more proudly than ever"
Looks like they'll be stocking the tube soon too:

Perhaps a silly question: I use my smart phone to connect to a projector, which works well in playing 4K movie and Netflix etc. What's the difference if using this instead of a powerful smart phone?
You need not use the smart phone.
My old Shield does everything this does but 4k upscaling and Netflix atmos. I was going to upgrade but prices are way too high for what it is in 2020 and I’m a bit over it. I watch remux 4k movies so I don’t need the The upscale and the Netflix atmos is available in more places now…and my money will be better spend on a new Xbox, ps5 or Apple TV 4K . Nvidia dropped the ball on pricing and supply on this one, it would have been an easy $300 from me a few months ago … whateves I guess
Same boat as you. I would have thrown $300 at them earlier in the year for this. But now I've found my old 2015 Shield does everything I need still, so buying the 2019 would be dead money for me - I don't even own a 4K TV. It would have been one of those "buy now, realise the mistake later" purchases.
What do you watch your remux movies through? Plex, Kodi? I will be buying one soon, pretty much for watching large remux mvk movies, YouTube, Disney+ and Foxtel GO.
kodi, plays almost anything with atmos and DTS-X too!
Surely if you have a 4K TV, it has most of the shield/tube functionality built in. There wouldn’t be many 4K TVs which aren’t “smart”.
Edit: maybe people who cheap out with no name/Kogan brand TVs need this.
You think so, but my two year old LG is one of the worst smart TVs I've ever had. Randomly loses Wi-Fi somehow loses ethernet.
I currently use my PlayStation 4 Pro for most of my digital content, but the shield has such a large amount of apps available because of Android operating system.Yes I have a Sony android TV and it is so slow and unresponsive most of the time. I bought the shield and it's so much better. Worth the money in my opinion.
Thanks for that, yes, that is an interesting point. My 75” Sony has been leaning against a wall for 18 months as it was shit, and I bought a Samsung instead.
I have a number of videos online where I was trying to work with Sony support to get rectified, including motherboards being replaced (twice), but it didn’t fix the issues, and the frustration was more easily solved by buying a non-Sony product.
(I actually thought it more an Android issue, than Sony … so when I see all these people wanting to buy more Android devices, I can only think back to my experience in Android TVs being crap)
@seedyrom: I purchased a Sony 65 X95 TV last year and it's been fantastic, fast snappy like using a phone.
Saying that it's a high end TV over $3000.00 with a much better processor, I think that's the limitation of budget TV models not having enough power to keep up with Android TV.
I agree in general but it has been a lot better since the last major update. Lot faster (not as fast as webOS or Shield's Android TV) and does not seem to crash much. The old Sony OS was also pretty slow.
@cykezero: For me it's actually slowed it down even more.
@rsk33: Do you mean booting up or just general navigating?
I guess most of the time I am just Netflix or Prime or FTA or Plex or YT so I am not really going in and out of the navigation.
I might just be used to the slowness!
I only use the Shield for Plex 4k stuff now and the TV for everything else as it supports Netflix Atmos and can do Plex 1080 quite easily. Once I get the new Shield Pro I will go back to using that for everything.@cykezero: I had Foxtel so I didn't notice. But now I cancelled that and started using the apps everything is slow. Even adjusting volume is delayed. I think the Sony TVs are underpowered.
@rsk33: Ha yeah I have noticed that about the volume. I do usually use my receiver for everything so it's not usually a problem.
I have last year's OLED and it is not any better, however I would much rather they stick with Android TV and fix the h/w issues than go to something else.
I have trouble understanding how this is like $300 better than my Chromecast. I get that it can run as a Plex server and is capable of games… But given the RRP was $350 when it was first released in Australia. Is the extra memory and storage worth it over the non pro version?
Main reason for me was chromecast and non pro cant play off a USB HDD when i dont wanna turn on my nas. And I think chromecast doesn't have atmos for prime etc…
Then there's playing your PC games over the network to your big TV etc…
ordered one on 16/7 , but still not shipped yet….
Help me out here guys, do I need this? I have a synology plex server but I have a smart TV which has it's own Plex client, netflix and youtube. What else would this be good for? AI 4K? Are the games all Android based?
