Does Office 2010 still have that useless "ribbon" toolbar thing like Office 2007?

Waste of space, cannot be customised, and things that you most commonly use are hidden from you. So annoying and invasive… and takes up massive amounts of screen space which is critical on devices like Netbooks (even at 1920x1080 it wastes SOOooooo much space)! I ended up staying with Office 2003 rather than stepping backwards to 2007.

UBitMenu is free for personal use, and available at a very reasonable price for businesses. If you’re using Office 2007 and not a fan of the Ribbon, UBitMenu works for it as well.

Takes a little bit of relearning but only Luddites continue to hate on the Ribbon UI ;)

      • +1

Yup. Almost everyone always resists change, but once you get used to it it's fine.

      • +2

I've used Office 2007 every day of my life since 2007. It's 4 years later, and I still hate the ribbon. I am certainly not a luddite, but when I make changes, I like to move FOREWARDS.

I'm one of those people who has customised toolbars in all my programs - the things that I use are on my toolbars, not the things that the software developer deems that I might use.

It's not the Ribbon INTERFACE that is the problem - it's the inability to customise it.

        • +3

Ummm… The ribbon can be customised. If anything it's a lot more customisable as you can create plugins to add custom controls to the ribbon as well.

          CarbonTwelve:

          Direct from Microsoft:

          Things you can't do
Add to or rearrange the commands on the Ribbon.
Change or remove a command or group on the Ribbon.

          http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/can-i-customize-…

        • In Office 2010 you can customise the ribbon as much as you want.

        • I actually like the Ribbon interface, then again, I'm not a power user who knows all his keyboard shortcuts to consider ditching the point-and-click UI.

Older users tend to prefer the classic interface (more resistant to change). My brother and parents loathe the ribbon interface and always asked me if I could change it for them, so I just suggested UbitMenu.

        • +1

Pick up a dictionary, that will help you move 'forward'.

        • If you don't like the ribbon, use quick access toolbars. If you don't like quick access toolbars…then…take a break, go outside… and play monopoly..like a boss

        • Thanks, choofa and CarbonTwelve - It's excellent that Microsoft have finally made the ribbon customisable in Office 2010. As you can understand, many people's bad experience with Office 2007 has really tarnished their opinion of the ribbon. Pity it took them so long to fix it.

Now, if only I could find the spellcheck in the OzBargain Comment Dialog's Ribbon, then I could solve my occasional typos… nothing worse that attracting attention, eh!

      • The Ribbon is further testament to the fact that Microsoft spends billions of dollars a year in R&D and still can't make something that is simple, elegant and doesn't make me want to lose my lunch.

    • Why neg Llama - I agree! The ribbon sucks IMO.

if you work for a big company/government make sure you check out the office HUP before jumping on this.

    HUP = office for $15

    • yep, that's another option, or even if you are a Uni student, you might be able to get a better deal with Outlook and Access in the package as well.

But it's not available to everyone unfortunately, and HUP and Student packs are normally for 1 user only, not 3.

      • Access, Visio, Project, OneNote 2010 is free with UNSW's MSDNAA, if you're doing a computing degree or a computing course. Unfortunately for most uni students, most of the free things with MSDNAA [Apart from windows 7 pro] is pretty useless to us, Word + Excel 2010 would have been awesome.

    • Unless you work at a company that has offshored it's IT support… then it's:

      "Hi IT Service Desk,

The Microsoft Home User program is a program where large corporations (like <Company name>) who run Microsoft Office applications can offer employees Microsoft’s Office System products at a lower cost. This is possible as <Company name> already have provided a license, so an additional cheaper ‘add on’ license is available at home for them to use and become familiar with. Microsoft has this program to reduce the training required for companies like <Company name>.

It is not an application; it is a program from Microsoft.

As an example, <Company name>'s employees who use Office Professional Plus 2010 on their work computers, would be eligible to acquire the HUP equivalent (Office Professional Plus 2010 HUP or Office 2011 for Mac), for use on their home (or mobile) computers.

      More details are here:

      http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/software-assurance/faq.as…
      and
      http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/software-assurance/home-u…

Do we participate in this program and if so, can I please have a our program code?

      Regards,

      <Me>."

      and then the response:

      "Hello David,

Can you please explain me about what program code are you asking and moreover is it a <Company Name> supported application.

      Regards,

      <Name>

    • In evaluating whether the Home-Office version of the MS Office suite meets your needs note that it doesn't include Publisher - the desktop publishing / page design program.

  • FYI you can get the version with Outlook and Access included for the same price on the Microsoft store, I bought it the other day, also Windows 7 is around $65 too

    • +1

marchi, which store? I just checked Microsoft Australia online store and it has Microsoft Office Home and Student 2010 3 PC's (1 household) download only for $209. To get MS Access need Microsoft Office Professional 2010 and its listed 1PC (1 user) $499 and 2PC (1 user) $849.

    • With no link it's vapourware.

  • TY for sharing, gonna swipe it.

  • Damn… can't find this online and the link doesn't work. Has this expired? The 1 user version is $169…

  • +1

It looks like it has disappeared. Any help?

Also, if you are going to post about cheaper alternatives, pleae post link, as none that I have seen match this deal. All others appear either imaginary (marchi MS) or for single license (HN $98).

    • If someone has a printout of the deal page, then you can try a price match with OW

  • Looks like the deal has expired. It's on their main homepage (as one of the 3 day deals), but not on the actual sales page.
Luckily I placed my order late last night. Got an email a few minutes ago stating that the order has been despatched via Australian Air Express. Fast work!
