This is meant to be the successor to the X390 so it's meant to be Lenovo's premium 13 inch ultraportable. Don't think I ever saw the X390 this cheap.

Good 100%sRGB/72% NTSC screen. The 6c/12t Ryzen Pro processor on the base model is plenty fast, considerably faster than than the i7 Intels or the Ryzen 4500U you get in other laptops. Integrated graphics are on par with a NVIDIA MX250 so ok for light GPU work or eSports gaming

Upgrades are cheaper with the code too. RAM is soldered so get as much as you need now. Up to 32GB option available with the Ryzen 7

Don't forget cashback!

X1 has bigger screen (14" vs 13"), it's thinner, lighter (extra 70 to 200g depending on configuration) with smaller bezels and slightly bigger battery. Backlit keybaord is also standard. AMD cpu in the body of an x1 would be amazing.

  • +1

You don't appear to be able to upgrade the ram to a dual channel 16gb, would be a deal breaker for me with these new AMD chips which thrive when utilising a high speed dual channel RAM.

    • This is already dual channel laptop.

  • So close to buying this, but after the massive issues with the Lenovo Thinkpad E485 trying to run Linux (they fixed many issues with bios updates over the years, but waking from suspend is still unreliable) I need to wait for more reviews/info. And not having dual channel memory is honestly a dealbreaker - on a laptop this expensive? Come on, use two chips.

  • Man $50 for a backlit keyboard is stingy.

    • +4

It's more like $35 with the code. Not bad at all if you ask me.

      • Backlit keyboard was always $15-20 previously

    • +1

I believe there is also a 5% CB. Solid price for 16GB Ram and touch

      • Only drawback is the dim screen (250-nit display)

    • Yup, I'm leaning this too. Madly trying to book my tax in to see how much I get back before pulling trigger.

    • Liking the look of this!

    • The education store seems to have similar spec (but non-convertible non-touchscreen) - IdeaPad Slim with 4500U 16/256 for $999

  • Love the Thinkpad T series though I still have my T420 from this amazing deal, and trying to find a good replacement for my Yoga 460 (prefer a laptop that can dock with dual 2k/4k, convertible form factor with pen support - maybe the X13 Yoga when that goes on sale)
My dream laptop would be a X13 Yoga with Thunderbolt 3 and the screen from a Surface Laptop 2

    • +1

Yea I am still using my old x230 so far and I have changed its power plug to typec, onli need small modification

  • +4

Wow these upgrade options are actually realistic!!

    • $70 for Touch Screen
    • $70 for 16GB
      +$140 for Ryzen 7

Nice find OP. I just want to know how this compares to the X1 series now. :)

  • +1

Nice laptop but ugh at that left CTRL key location.

Why can't they just keep a standard layout, or replace the right windows key in an ansi layout with the Fn like most boards do.

    • +6

Lenovo laptops usually let you swap Fn and CTRL in the bios.

      • +4

No need of going into bios, you could do it in Lenovo Vantage.

      • +4

But then… the win key is still misaligned and … meh I guess I am just picky haha.

    • -1

Nice laptop but ugh at that left CTRL key location.

Always been that arrangement for Lenovo. If you think big companies with 300k workforce didn't like it they'd tell Lenovo to change it.

    • +1

You can change this via the BIOS settings.
You swap the Fn key with the left Ctrl Key.
I have had no problems with this simple work-around.

    • Actually the placement of the left CTRL key in Lenovo keyboards gives me extra reach when doing key combos. One of the combos I frequent is "CTRL + T" which opens a new tab.

Had the left CTRL key been further to the left (ie. where the fn key is) then my short pinky and index fingers will be yelling at me each time I open a new tab. Would be my fault for being a tab whore I guess.

      • OneTab

        • Yep. Already installed haha

    • +1

Agree 100%. Kills any of these Lenovo deals for me which is a shame.

  • How does it stack up against this?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/541372

    • +1

      72% NTSC V.S. 45% NTSC

      • So basically the major difference is screen?

        • +1

Hmm also the usb connection, this one has
2 usb 3.2, USB C charger port, wifi 6, bluetooth 5(mltiple device or so i heard) newer model
          Easier return (Au vs. Us)

whilst the flex have 3.1 and 3.0, and idk about the wifi gen, but with bluetooth 4.2, other specs not sure like built quality etc

          • @Leleone: Thanks heaps, that's super helpful

        • Screen, build quality, port selection on this is better. Also AU warranty. And this model is faster 6c/12t vs 6c/6t.

This is a more premium laptop in general. This laptop doesnt have 360degree rotating hinge like the flex so you can't use it in tablet mode

    • If you need premium build quality and AU warranty, then I would go with X13 or T14

If you want the best value for money I would go with Lenovo Flex 5 14" 2-in-1 Laptop given 16GB Ram & Touch

      • X13 vs T14 same config AMD Ryzen 7 16GB RAM

Which one is better X or T?

  • +1

Any idea if the touchscreen supports a stylus?

    • +1

They offer lenovo stylus on checkout, idk if it does support it or not tho

    • +2

You'll need to go with the X13 Yoga instead, if you want stylus support. It's not a good experience using a stylus in traditional laptop mode even if it supports it.

    • As in can you use a basic 'dumb' stylus that's just a conductive stick, yes.

A real Wacom style active pen no.

    • +2

I'd take the Thinkpad on everything except looks.

      • +1

Cool, i'll return my dell qnd order this baby

      • I actually prefer the look of thinkpads. No nonsense.

    • This thinkpad is going to be a lot better build quality, with a better processor.
If you are just wanting a daily browser for normal tasks definitely the x13

  • How would X390/this compare to Surfacebook? I need tablet functionality :(

    • get x1 tablet

    • If your primary use is a tablet, get a surface pro. If you only need occasional tablet use, get a SB

      • It's a shame because this is a great price for an Ultrabook. Lenovo has traditionally great build quality. Oh well :( Thanks for chippping in advice.

    • +1

Have a look at the Yoga Duet 7i 13inch WQHD 1.16kg
      https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/yoga/duet-series/Yoga-D… - $2099 though

If you can get to the education store, the i7/16GB one is $2189

  • -3

    8GB RAM is not enough

  • -4

6 cores but only 8GB or memory?
That's not a very sensible configuration.
    Keep looking.

I think the downvote is not about your technical advice.

        Absolutely clueless.

        Hint, keep looking.

        • -1

          So witty.

  • Wow there's some decent options to upgrade to 16/32 GB etc as well.

  • If only it had thinner bezels. Other than that seems like a good setup, particularly upgrading to 8 cores and 32gb. I'll wait for a redesign with thinner bezels and brighter display though.

    • You'll be waiting forever. Im that old and one of my criticism about Lenovos progress.

      • I imagine but if they don't another brand will eventually do and get my money

        • On the works - Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Nano to compete with XPS and its less than 1kg thin bezel (notebookcheck news source). I'm now in the waiting game for the X13 to be sent. fingers and toes crossed. I've cancelled some orders with Lenovo before due to insane waiting period. decided to also get the yoga

          • @id: Fantastic, now they just need to put a Ryzen with 8C in there and I'm sold

  • I'm having trouble finding much info online about this laptop? Anyone found any decent reviews?

  • +1

    This one or the T14?

    • +1

      Depends on your preference.

This has a smaller screen, is lighter and more compact. The T14 is fatter and has a 14 inch screen.

Default screen is much better than the T14 but the T14 can be configured with similar quality screens, particularly the 400nit display which is better but has some smearing

This is cheaper, more-so when you factor in upgrading the T14's screen.

The T14 has one upgradable memory slot so you can add more memory later whereas you're stuck with whatever you chose now on the X390

Other than that I don't think there's that many differences. Might be some other smaller differences in configuration.

      • Just about to purchase and need some help too please. I've got a 16g ram, 4800u 13inch Ideapad which still is waiting to be dispatched for $1349 (Student pricing). How does this compare? Looks like its extra for slightly better build quality bow lower processor? Are there any other benefits worth buying this for?

        • The better screen is enough to sway me toward this ThinkPad X13.

        • You can spec this up to a 4750U which is similar to a 4800u
Build quality, screen, keyboard is really nice on thinkpads too. You get a bunch of nice thinkpad stuff like the spill resistant keyboard and the reinforced chassis. This has really nice wifi which the ideapad might not have. You do have to add some extra's to the thinkpad which come standard with ideapads like a backlit keyboard

      • Thanks. I purchased the T14 based on your comments!

  • Way too much bezel on that screen. Pass.

  • Wait for more Ryzen 7 4800u laptops come out, they smoke the equivalent Intel i7 especially in any iGPU related tasks. I think currently available is the Lenovo Ideapad 5

    • How's the thermal throttling on the new Ryzen 7s?

    • This is the Ryzen laptop you've been waiting for to come out.

The 4750U pro, a $160 upgrade, is the pro equivalent of the 4800U.

      • Not 140 from 30% disc?

        • you're right. I can't into math oopsies

          • @[Deactivated]: Yes I did this upgrade to 4750 but then started to think X13 or T14 and then this other thoughts on building a desktop too.

            I am still thinking…

  • +1

Battery is only 48w? Is that bad?

  • Nobody wants to talk about the Bloatware?

    • +1

I recently got a P43s, no bloatware or whatsoever.

    • +3

The business range is a lot lighter than the consumer ones..

But there is absolutely nothing stopping you from reinstalling. Win10 even picks up the key automatically.

  • There seems to be an error in the IR camera option. It says it is a $35 upgrade, but the total increases by $144.20 when selected

By the way, does anyone know if these have a glass trackpad?

    • +2

If it's like the X390 it'll be plastic. Also yeah, looks like the IR option is bugged or something.

  • Is this sufficient for a Year 8 student who shouldn't be gaming too much and plays the occasional Fortnight?

  • Does anyone know if using this code will invalidate Cashrewards or Shopback?

  • +1

Apparently Shopback is 13% for Lenovo now!
*edit: Only for LenovoPro and business customers. Easy to signup though if you have an abn

    • Thanks. It was easy signup process but it said upto* 13%, we'll see

      • I dont think it will work. There is a different price for LenovoPro customers which is all up more expensive even with the Shopback discount. I think this is more of a clickbait offer

        • So can we use cashrewards and still get something? I dont have an ABN

          • @dmb0312: I dont think you can use any cashback as you have to use promo code to get this price and promo codes are not mentioned on either cash back sites

  • Can you add a dedicated graphics card to this?

    • +1

Not in the option, but the integrated graphic is equal to MX 250 if that will be of any help.
Can play low quality fortnite or dota 2

      • Can I ask How will the latest civilization play on this?

  • +2

OK, I am going to pull the trigger on T14 instead of X13…
    I like X13 more but:

1, confirmed twice with reps on X13, 8G &16G ram is single ram soldered, so no dual channel. And guess what? 32G is for US version only, not AU version, even you can select it now, your order just won't proceed, again, told rep that I can pay right now with 32G version, and they both said it will not proceed… NO DUAL CHANNEL for AU

2,I don't think I will spend my money on "Thnikpad" - I want "Thinkpad"; JV, your turn now.

3, T range is more solid, and there is nothing on the market like it, at this price point.

    • +1

      just an update:

      T14 no good any more:
the 400 nits screen option is no longer there and rep said will be back 14 Sep 2020 as they have found some issues with that screen…

all the rest screen options on T14 is low colour coverage, not worth getting at all.

      • Low color coverage? If someone is using it with a dual monitor set up and is just not for gaming. Does it matter if they go with the other screen options?

    • another update:

      X13- 32G ram option removed…

and the website is buggy slow AF at moment

    • So is the 16G soldered dual channel on the T14 then?

    • +1

      Typical Lenovo annual product cycle:
Jan: Announces new laptops at CES
May/Jun: Finally orderable but with limited parts/options
Aug/Sep: No update on your order for months then it gets cancelled due to parts unavailability or misconfiguration of order. You give up on custom order, buy a stocked SKU using ebay 20% off code and get it in 24 hours.
Dec: Actually shippable laptops with all the marketed features back in CES but everybody is now looking at next years line up.

      **** Rinse and repeat ****

    • I bet your bottom dollar the lenovo rep doesn't know what single or dual channel is referring to. Just because its soldered without expansion doesn't mean its single channel. Its highly unlikely to be manufacturing a single & dual config mobo for different regions. Owners on reddit are claiming 16gb models are dual channels. Well at least all had spec it to 16gb or 32gb… pfref guides are identical despite region. Only usa ones u have options for privacy guard.
edit - l'll be a bit annoyed if mine comes single chan. purchased the 16gb spec

      • I went with a t14 and got an extra 8g in the SoDimm slot. From what I understand that is pretty guaranteed to be dual

        • yep. But as Lenovos soldered model x13 none upgradable. Its dual. tying to get somebody do to a cpu-z capture to confirm. also decided to get this x13

          • @id: Yeah I now the soldered memory won’t be upgradable but I know I won’t be doing that anyway so all fine.
I did see some screenshots on reddit for the t14 that showed single on a 16gb soldered and dual with 8 soldered and an 8 dimm.
Would be good to know if the x13 is that same if you can get hold of a screenshot

  • How is the build quality of this compared to the E14 from this deal?
    Cheers
