Recommendation: Badminton Racket + Backpack

Dear All,

I am after a badminton racket preferably Yonex (Budget $100) and a carry bag which has shoulder strips to carry as a backpack. The backpack should be able to carry 2-3 rackets, a pair of shoes, towels, shuttle corks, an extra pair of clothing (budget $100).

I know Rebel sports has some but they have been a rip off in the past and I want to know what options I have.
For the Yonex Racket I need your guide as I am not an expert. With commodities sales going slow is there a sale or bargain I can take advantage of ?
I live in Sydney near the international airport (Mascot). If there's a warehouse or a racket store please feel free to let me know.

When you do a Google search, be sure to spell it as 'racquet'.

Google ezbox for their branch shop in the city.
Also, Google Alpha Badminton (or Badminton Worx) for a shop at botany.
They both sell what you need, and can answer all your questions, they are the expert in the business……

saw Yonex backpack at amazon for $80-100 so yeah it is possible to fit your budget, BUT:
any backpack basically can be used, as long it is big enough to fit all your stuffs you mentioned above ie 30lt+ backpacks.
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Yonex-Tennis-Badminton-Backpack-BA…
just search on eBay, they are plenty maybe cheaper.

nowadays most backpacks has that laptop pocket, you can put the head of the rackets there.
the rackets handles will be sticking out of course, if you dont like you can put the rackets in separate racket bag/sleeve and carry them by hand.
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Waterproof-Badminton-Racket-Racque…
(just showing you the example of the single bag, dont buy it so ugly - if you buy a racket usually you get one for free anyway).

and if you not that high level player, carry 2 racquets is enough for one sessions.

    • (Caveat: My knowledge is limited to Sydney)
Agree. Probaby worth visiting your local Ezbox for Yonex racquets. A good way to get a bargain is to ask for racquets whose models are discontinued - these can usually be found on huge sale and it is not uncommon to find a $250 racquet on sale for $100ish.

I know you are looking or Yonex, but it may also be worth visiting Decathlon. Their Artengo branded racquets have worked well for me in the past. In my experience, Artengo does head-head and balanced racquets well, but light racquets are a bit hit and miss.

Heavy-head = good for players with aggresive / smash type of game
Light = good for placement game
Balance = middle ground between heavy and light racquets

      • sorry please do not buy badminton racquets from decathlon. ever.

        • Any reason. What has your experience been like?

          • @bunkr: see below reply from alex.
basically they dont stock good brands or models that are worth to buy. rebel decal, etc
best is online from eBay when you have gift card or some eBay promo etc etc
but you need to know which shop are legit.
            see reply from jmchin.

      This.

Harry at EZBox eastwood can sort you out as well.

Do not, under any circumstances buy a racket from Rebel Sports, or a normal sport shop. They have trash rackets are ridiculous prices.

Aside from EZBox, and Alpha Badminton, you can try Calibre in Seven Hills as well.

      • am badminton player
  • go visit a store and talk to someone that know their stuff. Bakers tennis shop in sydney CBD. that guy knows his stuff

  • Sport Stadium has good prices but online only. https://www.ebay.com.au/str/stadiumsports/Badminton/_i.html?…

  • Are you in a hurry to purchase them? Pre-Covid, the Victor courts (now called Badminton Worxs/Alpha Badminton) in Botany/Silverwater use to organise massive end of year sales around late-November for rackets/shoes/clothes. Not sure that would still be a thing though…

  • What are you guys using for Shuttles?

Aeorplane Green's are set to rise in prices again due to Covid

  • That is more than enough $ to get a decent beginner racquet. Yonex Arcsaber Lite would be the best value for money IMO:

    https://ezbox.com.au/download/badminton-ezbox.pdf

Racquets usually come with a yonex carry bag

    • he needs big bag. 100 for brand new rackets, hmmm okay for beginner but a bit too little for intermediate, definitely not enough for advance player

so i think he can try get a $80 bag then put the 20 for racquet ie up to 120
      all up still $200

      • what intermediate racquet can you get for $120 full rrp?

        • not sure i have looked properly but what i am was trying to say:

100 is a bit too little, ideally 150-ish for intermediate (unless clearance, or almost new second hand).
and I'm not sure if OP is casual, beginner or intermed so probably 120 can get him high end beginner racket.

          edit:
here, i saw this racket on special $110 empty at badmintonworx botany, good for double just a little too light but still okay for intermed.
          https://badminton-coach.co.uk/8783/victor-hypernano-x800-con…

there are hundreds of rackets out there just talk to the pro ie shop owner especially if you are not advance level

  • Thank you all for the replies. Apologies for the late reply as I couldn't go online the rest of the day.
I am a beginner let's say I played while I was young then after years I played for a year continuously in Sydney around Tempe. I always played in the bottom of the rank haha :) so I am a beginner with my skills but I love smashing not placing the shuttle.
With this is mind what would be my options for a racquet (I thought it's racket if properly used not the french use of words Racquet) ?

I called Badminton Worx in Botany they are open late but they have all high end Yonex starting from $250 and 9 Racquet bag which is huge. I think I need a six Racquet bag or a bagpack to fit in my stuff.

I also found the below in Rebel Sports:
    1) Yonex Nanoray Dynamic Levitate Badminton Racquet Yellow $79
    https://www.rebelsport.com.au/p/yonex-nanoray-dynamic-levita…

    2) Bag Wilson Federer Team Racquet Bag: $85
    https://www.rebelsport.com.au/p/wilson-federer-team-racquet-…

What do you guys think of the Rebel Sports option ? Since I do not know much about Racquets is it a good deal ?

    • Please read all the comments few says avoid rebel for rackets, but don't care about bags you can get that Wilson if you like, like I said you can even use any backpacks with laptop compartment.

The difference is with real Badminton bags some will have small pocket or sleeve for shoes. (I think the tennis bags will just 2 big compartments)

Nope. Badminton worx also sell beginners rackets $80 to $120 I'm sure of this.

      • Thanks ChiMot. When I called Badminton Worx in Botany he said for $100 there are no Yonex racquets only high end ones. He recommended me Adidas Racquet.
For the bag I always wanted to get something good looking and best if I can see how the 2 Racquet backpack vs the 6 racquet tennis ones would fit me.

I had a quick look at Ezbox https://ezbox.com.au/download/badminton-ezbox.pdf so many Yonex options I am not sure which one to pick which will be good balance one (I like to smash and not worry about strings being ripped)

Could you recommend me few racquet models which I can research and buy ?
Stadium_Sports also has many many options but which Racquet to pursue on my budget of $100 is the issue I am facing.

  • Hi All after a lot of thinking I am going to go to Ezbox store in Chippendale Store which is closer to me. But before I go I will call them tomorrow morning to find out if they have the Yonex Racquets that I want and the Wilson bag/

For the Badminton Racquet they have so many options I really need your help my pointing me two or three options so that I can go ask them and test it out / take their opinions into consideration and buy.
If I go there without any options I might be given a bad option.

    • As others have said above, you should just walk in and tell them your playing style (e.g. enjoy fast games and powerful smashes). They'll be able to recommend you rackets based on your budget way better than strangers on the internet..

Best to go in and have a feel for the racket. If you like smashing, quite common to go for more head-heavy or even-balance racket. If you don't know which type you would prefer, ask to borrow a few of your friends racket and test them in a game?

Does your $100 budget include stringing? Choosing strings and string tension is equally important as the racket itself.

If you're a social/casual/club player who is a beginner, the racket you use won't affect your game that much.

    • "For the Badminton Racquet they have so many options"
that's the reason why it is difficult to give recommendation, especially for intermed and beginners
i think for people playing for fun, Balance is a must. then there is only 2 deciding factors: light or heavy.

go to the store, ask them for balance racket, and your choice (light or heavy). get the one up to your budget.
string with medium to low tension so it will last longer and help you with power.

      • Thank you so much. I’ll be going with Yonex Arcsaber Lite

  • What shoes do you wear to play badminton ? I have a Nike trainer but I hear that causes ankle or knee issues. Any recommendations for shoes below $100 ?

  • Sorry guys for bumping the thread. Any recommendations on my above post ?

    • Definitely should go in to a ezbox and try a couple pairs to see which is most comfortable and fits best. Shoes are one of those that you probably shouldn't skimp on to reduce risk of injury. As long as it has a rubber sole and fits well it will work.

      • great thanks a lot. I will be going to Ezstore tomorrow as they did not have the racquet which I was after.
I did some online research the Power Cushon technology by Yonex looks good and I will see if I can get something which will have ankle support. like Yonex SHB03Z or 65Z
