Estimate for Fixing Deep Car Scratches

Hi all

Any idea roughly how much would I be looking at for someone to fix these scratches (please see images in the links)? Rub against a bloody pylon in a tight space tonight… :(

Is it gonna be hundreds or thousands?
Would it be easy to fix it myself?

Many thanks

  • Have you tried wiping it off? Sometimes some marks are paint from other surfaces scraped onto your car. Seeing as I can see a tint of blue underneath the white, I thought this might be the case?

    • will try to do that…thanks mate

I was going to suggest rubbing with toothpaste, which I've successfully used in the past to remove paint from the "donor" item, but your images look more like the blue paint on your car has been scraped off, rather than white paint from the pylon has been deposited on your car.

  • Looks like a buff down and respray job so will be several hundreds closer to one thousand mark. You won't be able to do this properly yourself.

Get a couple of quotes from local painters.

    • thanks mate…damn… :(

I'm guessing at least $600 for two panels and that's on the low end.

    • thanks mate, based on what @Ghost47 said you're probably on the mark :)

  • I did this years ago because I too was an idiot. It cost me about $600 in total. Wish I could remember who I went with to repair it because they did a fantastic job.

    • please do let me know if you remember…. :) Thanks!

      • All I can remember is that they were somewhere in Springvale/Westall in Melbourne, it seems you're in Sydney so I doubt you'd want to drive all the way down there to fix it.

Hopefully someone knows a good panel shop in Sydney. Still have the photos of the damage on my own car, the damage I have is not as extensive, you definitely have more scratches and my door wasn't that bad. Since you're in Sydney and since the damage is more extensive I would say that $600 is the minimum.. but I paid this about 9 years ago.

        • oh…yea sounds like I'd probably need to pay more given it was that long ago…

  • $500 cash job if you know where to go.

    • Thanks plmko, any suggestions in Sydney?

    • Any SE melb reccomendations?

I once came back to my parked car after a hit-and-run with similar looking damage in terms of paint transfer but it wasn't as large and it was on my rear bumper.

I managed to fix it up by spraying a heap of WD-40 on the affected area and rubbing it repeatedly with a magic eraser (buy from Coles/Woolies). I sprayed more WD-40 whenever most had run off the panel and rinsed the magic eraser in water every minute or so. It took about 20 minutes of rubbing and the end result is that you can't even tell the damage was there.

It's hard to tell in the photos but it looks like the damage is just paint transfer like mine was. You have more damage so I'd hazard a guess that you'd be looking at almost an hour of rubbing so be patient (and buy a few magic erasers, not just one) if you're trying this method. Keep in mind that it won't work at all if the damage has scratched down to the metal.

In principle, cutting compound or polish should also work for this type of damage but the polish I had on hand didn't do the trick and I've never used cutting compound before. Happened to find the WD-40 trick on youtube.

    • Thanks mate but based on a few people below they seem to think it's more than paint transfer…dunno..might try to give it a wipe and see

Try a cutting polish. It looks to be white transfer from the thing that was hit rather than blue paint removed.

If it is blue paint removed you’ll need to respray. Depending on how well you want it fixed, you could rub it back and get a spray tin of paint and diy. (YouTube for how to).

I did a DIY on my wife’s car bumper. Paint had scratched off down to plastic. It looks smooth, but the colour match isn’t great. Can see it from up close, but it’s way less visible than the scratches from a distance.

    • will youtube for the sand back and spray…if too difficult/time consuming I might just get some quotes…thanks mate!

  • Wd-40 new kitchen spongue (must be new amd firm) in the first instance to clean it up

Unfortunately, it’s not paint transfer, as other have suggested (there might be a little) as there is large sections of the paint missing where you can see the undercoat underneath.

Unfortunately, this one isn’t going to buff out. 2 options are, take it to get some quotes done on it and get the best price. (I’d be banking on around $800 to $1200 at a guess)

Other option would be to just give it a clean up and leave it if you’re not planning on selling the any time soon and if it’s not affecting the drive ability of the car. You could get it repaired and do the same thing again or some a-hole in a parking lot could swipe it and you’ll be another $1000 out of pocket.

That happened to someone I know. They spent over $2.5k on getting a car repainted and less than 2 months later a douche on a bicycle ran a red light and did $800 worth of paint damage. Worst part was bike douche screamed victim and hurled abuse until a witness offered dash cam footage, bike douche then did a runner.

      • wow I would be so pissed if I was him…

    • Thanks @pegaxs, I dont actually mind about the aesthetics (and not selling anytime soon) but I'm worried about it'd rust…that's why I might get some quotes to have it fixed…

  • Sadly for you, that is a trip to the panel shop. Done and deep.

    • thanks doctor :(

  • They would probably quote two panels too

If you have plenty of time, you can try it yourself, but the clear coat - is not easy to find, and not cheap.
You want the ones that have an activator (which you can only use once, 48 hours to use, which is plenty), called 2k, supercheapauto definitely doesn't sell the right one (I tried)
    Equipment cost:
    - 2k clearcoat
    - 1 or 2 cans of paint mixed up at supercheapoauto/automotive paint shop (you need your car's paint colour code) - $70~$80
    - Sanding paper (wettable ones, you want a range of increasing grit)
    - Sanding block
    - Sandable primer
    - Cleaning solution (mineral turps/99% isopropyl alcohol if you have)
    - Filler may not be necessary, I don't see any deep grooves
    - Time to not use your car to allow paint and clear coat to dry
    - Experience (you can either pay someone, or watch a lot of youtube videos)

To repair it in theory is simple, in practice it's quite labour intensive, and when you pay a professional to do it there is an expectation of a properly carried out job,
If you can get it done for $600-$800, I'd consider it cheap, some places want 1k for each panel, and your photo technically shows two panels..

Call around a few places and ask for prices

    • Isn't using 2K illegal unless it's used in a paint booth?

      • "Isn't using 2K illegal unless it's used in a paint booth?"

        Why would it be illegal?

I forgot to add a beefer respirator to the list as well. Definitely need one with a 2K clear coat..

    • Thanks a lot for the detailed response mate! will probably try to get some quotes first to decide whether I wanna diy….

      • DIY will be around $100-$150 in parts alone + time to watch youtube videos + time to carry it out

I DIY'd mine but mine was the bottom 1/3rd front plastic bumper that had a lot of cosmetic scratches (no filler needed).. because I got a cheap clear coat from supercheapauto, it doesn't look glossy and I didn't know how to blend the paint, so it's obvious it's been repainted (not that I plan to sell my car)

I don't regret it though, it was a good learning experience

It looked REALLY nice when I hadn't put the clear coat on though, the colour match using the car's paint code from Supercheapauto was spot on.

My clear coat turned extremely cloudy.

Just like cooking, 90% of the work is done in the preparation.

Any simpleton can put food in a pan/pot and turn on the stove/heat, but it''s the things most people don't see, which really matter

  • How much is the car worth?

    • 24k used 7 years old

      • +4

Which 2013 Mitsubishi with hubcaps is worth $24k?!

        • Maybe $24k 7 years ago?

2008 mitsubishi outlander activ seems to have the same hubcaps.

          • @Euphemistic: yea paid 24k 7 yrs ago….no idea what it's worth now…

            • @homersyd: There's a first, I've never heard someone answer "what's X worth?" with the value they paid years back 😂

        • 2013 4WD 2.4L Outlander…

  • Try a cut and polish before getting quotes to fix you may be surprised at how good it will come up many years ago drove a burgundy Mitsubishi express van it really bad white marks from memory similar to yours on it they scrubbed off with a bit of elbow grease and a cut and polish product like
    https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/sca-sca-super-cut-polish…
    https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/sca-sca-cut-and-polish--…
    https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/armor-all-armor-all-liqu…
In my opinion it's better to try $20 on a product than spend $600-$1000+ on repairs
