  Hair clippers and beard trimmers are usually slightly different, with different sizes. You can use one or the other for both purposes occasionally, but if it's for long term use you'll want to have the right thing (or have both if need both purposes).
  Of course someone will come and say "I've been using the same machine for everything for years and my hair hasn't fallen out yet". But most people prefer the right machine for the right purpose on the long run, that's why they sell different versions.
  What exactly is this machine that in a glorious act of marketing they describe as both purposes??

    From the price point (sub $100), pretty clear that their target is occasional home users rather than pro barbers. So dual purpose is good in that regard.
