TV Recommendations ~ $1500

I've been searching online for TV's with my budget of around $1500. So far I think I want a 55 inch, 4k TV either with an ips or OLED screen. I've been eyeing the LG B9 and the Hisense 55px, although the B9 deals have just about passed and the 55px is in very limited stock near where I live. I could live without OLED, but I really want it, and HDMI 2.1 is also kinda important to have.

Any recommendations???

  • If you're looking for those specs, your only option is to wait until the cx reaches that level, which it most likely will

  • Have you looked for a TCL with those specs. I have a TCL 75 inch (non OLED) and its a cracker! Android OS and takes close to a minute to fire up (which was my greatest reservations before buying it)but me & the better half don't seem to really mind it. The fact that everything is controlled via a single remote and can get most of the apps straight on to the TV is a game changer. Just love the TV

    • How much you paid for it

A minute to turn on or to fully load the menus etc.?

      • Less than a minute - and that is to be fully ready with everything including menu to be loaded. Changing channels is instantaneous

  • Getting very difficult to track down any 2019 OLED models. My recommendation is to wait 3-6 months for sales on the LG BX (although I suspect even then it's going to be closer to $2,000 than $1,500).

    • I picked up the B8 in March 2019 for $1600. $2000 + 20% discount from Bing Lee ebay sale.

Based on this time line, methinks it'll drop to $2000 towards the end of the year and then maximise savings by applying discount coupons that you find on OzB.

  • 4k TV either with an ips or OLED screen

TV panels are not the same as monitor panels. IPS is hot garbage for TVs, while VA panels are of much better quality than what you see in most monitors. VA panel competes much more closely with OLED in this space than IPS ever will.

Here's professional testing that shows how poor IPS TVs are generally:

    • Yeah I know. The reason I want either an OLED or a IPS panel is that they come with great viewing angles, which I need in my wide living room.

      • Again, these are premium VA panels, and some even come with coatings to improve viewing angles, but these come at the expense of contrast and/or some refractive issue if strong lighting is being shone on them.

Here's some data on 2019 and 2020 panels:

I would definitely focus on OLED if you can wait, but the next option would be VA, every time.

  • Thanks for the help. Based on this advice I would probably just wait until Black Friday or Cyber Monday for a good deal.

Yeah, but you should also do your research ahead of time.

At $1500 you're probably going to be in the category of 55-65 inch sized, HDR-4K resolution, and using IPS-LED screens with 120Hz refresh rate. I think on every level televisions are comparable in Image Quality (say compare low-end to low-end, or mid-tier to mid-tier, or a high-end to high-end). So you should focus on FEATURES, and definitely NOT image quality. That is to ask:
      - Which has the best User Interface (LG webOS, Samsung Tizen, Sony AndroidTV, Hisense AOSP, etc etc).
      - Which has the best "smart tv" features (App Store, Media Playback, Web Camera, HDMI 2.1 spec)

In the real-world you wouldn't care for a 5% better looking screen (even if it's 10% cheaper) than an alternative TV… but the (barely noticeably) better looking TV has a very laggy user interface, or lacks some Streaming App support, or doesn't support a feature you wanted.

(for instance, my brother's brand new Samsung TV from a couple years ago used to take over 10 seconds to turn on, and changing channels would take about 4 seconds each, and the touchpad mouse cursor was choppy and annoying to use. And this was a flagship/very expensive TV!)

  • Def get into a jb. Buy a display.
