What Fluids Should I Use to Top up My Car?

I have purchased fluids to top up my car, the brake and coolant I got is correct but the power steering i got appears to be wrong. the colour that it looks like from the reservoir looks blue, the fluid i got is amber, when i dipped a piece of tissue into the power steering reservoir is came out darkish orange. im not too sure what fluid i should use in this case. i have a mitsubishi lancer 2.0L MY12.

any advice will be great

    Orange is for blinker fluid.

What fluids should i use to top up my car?

The type that meets the manufacturer's specifications. Read the service manual.

    Lol. Looked up the owners manual and under power steering, it says;

    Genuine Mitsubishi Power Steering Fluid.

    Well played, Mitsubishi, well played.

That being said, the stuff in the system already my be a darker colour because it has been used. The stuff you got would probably work. Power steering systems are not as critical as engine systems. The power steering fluid you got should be almost the consistency of water. Very thin. So long as it is of a similar consistency to what’s in the car already, it ‘should’ be ok.

Are you replacing or just topping up?

LOL, Mitsubishi keeping themselves in business.

OP it looks like it should be just normal old Dexron IV. Drain as much old crap from the reseviour with a syringe or similar as you can, fill it up with this stuff, http://www.penriteoil.com.au/products/power-steering-fluid , quite cheap. Then turn car old, turn the steering wheel full lock side to side about 10 times, turn car off, drain the fluid again. Rinse and repeat a few times and you will be good for another few years.

      • When I said "turn car old" I meant "turn car on". Can't edit, too late.

      • I checked a couple of recommendations from fluid / oil manufacturers. All specify Dexron II & III as suitable (for the turbo MY2012 2.0l), not IV.

        • You are correct, I meant to put III not IV. The fluid I linked too will definitely still work though.

      Genuine Mitsubishi Power Steering Fluid.

      Well played, Mitsubishi, well played.

Failing that, go to auto parts store and look it up in the book (or computer).

I'd judge whether you got the right stuff based on if it meets required specifications - not by colour. Different manufacturer stuff will be different colours.

Also, go ask on a Mitsubishi forum, not OzBargain. I'm sure some Lancer heads will be more knowledgable.

Why are you topping up all this stuff?

Why are you topping up all this stuff?

Agree. Drain and refill with fresh fluids.

      Do you have any leaks?

  • Get some blue food dye and put it in there. That should fix it.

  • It sounds as though you have very little knowledge of car maintenance?
It would be far safer and "cheaper" to get your car serviced at your local mechanic and they will check all those fluid levels for you.
Getting it wrong can be expensive.
Some places run basic car maintenance courses which may be an easy way to learn more?

Bit late to check this here after you have already serviced the car

Anything that has electrolytes, it's what cars crave.

    • Or Red Bull. That’s why they sponsor so much Motorsport.

    • Idiocracy.

      • Best doco ever!

        • They only got the date wrong. They set it too far in the future.

  • Details of the brand of power steering fluid you purchased?

Most manufacturers have a compatibility guide, e.g. Penrite

Noticed that the non-turbo MY2012 2.0l Lancer recommendation notes that the steering is electrically assisted. Is yours turbo or non-turbo?

  • Brawndo, of course. Gives cars what they crave, electrolytes

  • As you haven't stated the brand /type of PS fluid you bought, it's impossible to give advice.
