  • Awesome! was waiting for it to drop like in the US

  • +9

but its not android honeycomb, why would you buy this anyway? no apps support, its just another HP touchpad soon to be in the graveyard.

    • -1

Actually, it would be more correct to call it a premature Amazon Kindle Fire.

    • the touchpad was awesome at it's price. WebOS is a brilliant OS. and I'm finding plenty of useful apps for it. I don't need an app store with a million apps, I just need the handful of apps I actually use. which the touchpad has.

not sure if the Blackberry app world has the apps I would actually use though for the playbook. But this is certainly a much more realistic price point for it. If i didn't already have the touchpad and have ditched my BB for an android phone I might have been tempted by this playbook deal…

  • +4

    Soon to be $99?

    • +6

I think we should all start forming samsung-esque queues outside our HNs for the announcement* of tomorrow morning's firesale - I don't want to miss it like last time! lol

      *speculative not actual

  • i would jump on this if it was 99

  • +1

the target market for this device are the already dwindling blackberry users .. so .. yeah .. expect to be $99 quite soon too :)

and remember .. this is only 7" device..

  • Good tablet but dont expect much in the App store :(

  • +13

OMG i just told my friend, he bought it for 750 when it came out hahhahahah

  • +1

Wonder if you can get android on it…..

    • you can get android apps

      • +1

can you? i still think $300 for galaxy tab is not a bad deal yet as it offers 3g and celluar phone functions, app store is updating daily also. as other said, the only drawback so far for BB is lack of apps!

        • Where is this $300 Galaxy tab of which you speak? Was going to get a kindle fire but no love for Aus at the moment. I'd pay an extra $100 for a Samsung :)

        • The $300 for Galaxy Tab was a clearance price months back. I don't think you'll be able to get it anymore

      • +1

To be accurate, you should be able to get an Android app player in the near future (was originally to have been available months ago, there's still no firm release date: http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/03/blackberry-playbook-will-… ) that will run some Android apps (it will most likely be lacking support for some important Android features: http://www.bgr.com/2011/09/28/blackberry-playbook-android-su… ) once they have been ported by the app's developers (if they can be bothered) with a Blackberry SDK, and then re-released on the Blackberry App Market.

  • Nah the price of this is still going way down. It is still the same price as an HTC flyer of tab+. Not to mention the upcoming kindle fire.

  • +4

With the new Kindle fire coming, this playbook will soon become TouchPad 2.

  • is this better than the acer tablet ??

lol just got one that why i ask :(

    • +2

Different devices with completely different builds. Android is generally more robust than BB Tablet OS and isn't a non-dead platform in Australia.

    • -1

      Acer runs Android, so no.

  • doesn't support email i heard?

  • do we need to subscribe to BIS to browse the web?

    • you need to be connected to wifi done

  • Poisoned chalice!

  • it's pretty cheap for being 6 months old.
but i'd only buy it when the price drops by extra $100
    why?
    1. no email client
    2. not many apps
    3. not as customisable as Android.

Still Playbook is great to watch movies and browse web.
The movie player actually works unlike HP TouchPads
    and it is very responsive.

    • KalemSoft Media Player for the HP TouchPad is excellent, and plays nearly every file format I throw at it flawlessly, including 720P MKVs: http://www.kalemsoft.com/site/products-WebOS-KSMPlayer.html

The built-in player (and most of the other built-in apps) are rubbish, I agree. But Android is here now, with the release of the first public alpha by CyanogenMod, and things are looking up for us TouchPad owners: http://rootzwiki.com/showthread.php?4011-Discussion-Cyanogen…

      • Tried Kalem it worked flawlessly. The only problem is paying $5.99? and installing it
(installation wasn't difficult at all but some people expect iOS level of installation difficulty lol)

        I sold mine as I wanted a 7" tablet.
Hopefully Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 would be reasonably priced

  • +1

Good deal, but I think I'm gonna wait till the price drops a bit more too. The main issue with the Playbook is the lack of a native email client.

  • What does this 'lack of email client' really mean? Can we still use hotmail etc on the playbook?

    • only if you log into your account on the web browser

    • RIM have a developer conference coming up oct 18-19 so "native" email and android apps will surely be announced here. Web based email is but a short browser bookmark away. If you have a blackberry, then native email is mute since you can pair your phone to the device.

      • "moot" not "mute". But yeah, if you have a BB phone, you pair the phone to the tablet and the tablet displays the phone's email and lets you reply/send/receive etc as if from your phone, just on the nicer bigger screen of the tablet.

But if you don't have a BB phone, you have to use web email, or wait for the standalone email app to get released by RIM.

        • oops. thanks ;)

that pretty much sums it up.

        • thx guys for explaining~

  • yup, we are all waiting to the day when drops "$99"

  • Wonder if the Cius would suffer this fate :D :D :D

  • just wondering what happen with samsung galaxy pad, so far they can't sell this item in australia, if someone can sell from china and send by post to here, is it legal? custom can not stop a gift parcel from overseas right? i mean it is illegal to sell, but it is legal to own it if you buy from overseas?

    • +2

if someone can sell from china and send by post to here, is it legal?
Yes you can do that and yes it is legal.

custom can not stop a gift parcel from overseas right?
No, customs can stop any parcel they want. But customs will not bother with galaxy tabs - remember that at the moment apple has only been awarded an injunction barring samsung from selling the tabs until the full court case regarding IP infringement is heard. The product in and of itself is NOT "illegal" as yet.

i mean it is illegal to sell, but it is legal to own it if you buy from overseas?
It is currently "illegal" to sell in Australia until the main case is decided. Apple is running this same case in a number of countries. If you buy it from a country where they do not have an injunction ie anywhere in South East Asia, then "technically" neither you nor the seller are committing an illegal act.

      • that is another loophole to make money :)

        • +2

Not unless you are overseas. If you in Australia and selling to Australian's via an overseas source aka dropshipping or what Kogan was doing, then as of the issuance of the injunction you will be deemed to be committing and illegal act by selling gtabs in Oz and Apple can come after you. Even if you are overseas you may get away with a handful of orders to Aus but full fledged supplying then again Apple can screw you due to the injunction (barring of course obvious peripheral issues such as jurisdiction etc).

Long story short. If you want it for yourself, buy it. If you want to start a business, be prepared to move into the Silverwater Hilton.

      • -1

so if samsung sell this item from their site in singapore or other country in asia that doesn't have this injunction, customer pay via this portal, and process the administration and payment on that country outside australia, and if samsung singapore (just an example) said you can pick up from their store in australia, that still legal right? coz the purchase was made in overseas, in the country where doesn't this injunction. and they only provide free delivery on this item?

        • +5

Facepalm NO. Sale and Supply is prohibited (via injunction) in Australia, especially direct from Samsung. They will NEVER allow you to buy in SG and pick up in AU. If you do want to buy, then you have to do it through a third party supplier who is willing to sell and ship to Australia. End of story. You will get away with a handful but will get screwed trying to do this with commercial quantities.

Ok, I'm done for my quota of legal/illegal questions for the day - already do this all day :P If you want to buy it from overseas I've already answered all that you need to know. G'nite.

        • It's a good thing no one gives a flap about the Galaxy tab. If Samsung somehow brought upon an injunction to stop Apple selling iPads (for whatever reason), everyone is going to go ape shit.

        • -1

why this question get negative vote? hi kid, do you know what is the different between a question and a statement?

  • I was just looking at one of these for the first time in HN a couple of days ago. I would say it is the nicest tablet out there if you don't mind or want a 7". Android app support is still coming as well as an email client. OS is great as is the hardware, which feels very nice in person. I think it deserves to be priced a bit higher than the Fire - so between $250-$300.

  • -4

Wait…for Kindle Fire. Seems to have the same shell.

Or wait for further inevitable price drops when this goes the way of the Touchpad!

    • +2

Says the guy who posted the Kogan 'bargain'.

      • -3

But the same guy (me) gave +ve this bargain too. Thanks for 'stalking' me on OB! LOL.

I need a PA. Want the job?

I could also add, get the Kogan bargain and save $135! Two sides of the coin.

To add: I do think that with RIMs recent network issues along with the acknowledge flop of the Playbook in terms of sales numbers, the price will go down even further.

In the US, it's US$245 ish. Even with GST, we're paying slightly more than the US.

This is a good price. Just hold off for abit longer if you don't absolutely need a tablet.

        • How much do you pay?

I just thought it was a bit hypocritical to tell people to wait for the Kindle Fire in this thread and not to wait in your own thread.

  • this is awesome

  • -1

everytime when you buy some cheap thing in hv,they need to ask you to buy something else. like "do you need a extra warranty, a switchboard ,you know ,warranty never cover the this kind of faulty, and you need a blueray player for the 3D tv,,,," I always say no no no,,,no ,,,I have a ps3,,,whenever I got the stuff paid, thats the only thing i finally paid. i feel i am a cheapskate, cause i never buy anything the salesman recons.

    • Up-selling in stores = news to some people.

    • Just walk in to the next HN with a T-shirt that says 'If you try to cross-sell, I'll punch you in the tit'.

      I know, I'm not original.

  • and the process of paying in hv is such a long one

  • Isn't the price in somewhere else is $249 for 16GB? Then this $294 is a not so greedy price, ok for who needs it, not a deal

  • Went to Harvey Norman today to buy one, ended up getting the 64GB model for $398. Comes with a little pouch too, which is really handy when keeping it in my bag etc.

I used to have an Acer Iconia A500 (16GB) and I can say, I prefer this much more. I prefer the 7" form factor (easier to carry around) and the software on it is really smooth and plays well with the 7" screen.

All in all, I would say the $400 price tag is just right for the device. Well worth my money (in my opinion).

    • Are you able to post or email a copy of your receipt snowdognz please?

  • Went into Harvey Norman Wiley park and they had $40 off the already reduced prices so I got a 16 gb $249 (last one) and its pretty awesome. Wanted 32gb but they had none left at $317, i'm not shocked. Also no 64gb left at $358

  • So is this only a weekend special? I was thinking about going in and having a look at one either monday or tuesday…

  • The deal is expired. Check the HN website.

Glad I got in when I did.

  • Some People found this deal useful and still no +.

  • Can someone who bought this in WA post a copy of their receipt please.

    Thanks in advance!
