Asking for computer purchase assistance

Dear all,

I am looking to the ozbargain community for guidance. I understand there are a lot of computer experts/enthusiasts here, and unfortunately I do not know anyone with that level of computer knowledge! It has been a great learning curve for me too.

Essentially I am looking to have a desktop computer built- I am looking at the specs below. The purpose for its use is probably general (office documents, internet- multi-tabs, video incl. high definition online streaming +- video editing), and I understand the computer below is overkill. But I don't know how it will be used in the future.

Would you pls let me know what you think of this setup (incl. if there are major flaws/poor parts/if I should change particular parts/if I should prioritise something over another). And could you PM me what you think this setup should cost?

Athena M1 Case
Intel I7-10700K processor
Intel Z490 WiFi MATX Motherboard – Gigabyte or Asrock
MSI GAMING X Trio 2080S
64GB 3200 (4x16GB)- Corsair or G.Skill
1TB m.2 NVME SSD- Either Samsung or Team
1TB 2.5" SSD- Samsung 860 EVO
750W Gold 80+ PSU- EVGA, Deepcool or Corsair
360MM ARGB MSI Liquid Cooler
W10 Pro Full Version
Ethernet on-board
External Blue-ray writer- ASUS or LG
Wireless Microsoft keyboard and mouse
TP-Link Archer T5E AC1200 Wireless Dual Band PCle Adapter
Wanting at least 2 year warranty

Many thanks

  • Looks fine if you've got the budget for it. Use https://au.pcpartpicker.com/ to put together the build cost.

  • For your needs a second hand office computer is plenty

For $300 you can get i7 4790 and 16gb ram, just add a network card and bt adapter for $30 as well as a 1tb ssd for $150 and you're set.

If you need it you can always add a low profile gpu for another $200 putting the total to under $700.

    • Thanks for your reply. I definitely understand this, but the computer is a present for someone important to me (and I want them to have the best of 'both worlds' if that's what they choose, based on my budget). Would you have a comment based on the way it is and/or PM what that get up should cost?

      • Video editing? Maybe you need more storage or a NAS(Network-attached storage) for archiving the footage… 2TB can be small for people who do photography, raw film and as a side note gaming….. Just food for thought….

      • Is there a budget? If you don't care about the money at all just build whatever but most people try to get the best performance for their budget.

        • About 4k, definitely wanting the best parts/performance built within this budget. Does my budget match the specs in your opinion?

        • where do you purchase the i7 4790 and 16gb ram from?

      • For someone else, get a brand pc, save lots of time when warranty comes.

If you are in Adelaide, maybe you can talk to the OP from https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/549654 post

    • Sounds extremely suspicious that op posted this, hours after someone posts about building pc’s.

      • I don't live in Adelaide

      • MrHyde and icanconfirm are hardly new to the forums though….

64gb ram is way too much unless you use it for 8k video editing. Maybe google this to get an idea of 32vs64 ram. Also you may want to hold off buying the graphics card until new 3080 hits the market.

    • Thanks for the feedback- taking it down to 32GB, what would you use the difference in cost to 'bolster' up elsewhere so to speak?

      • storage

  • I’d replace the water cooler with a good noctua fan and also I wouldn’t save on the MB as this is the least upgradeable part of the pc

    • I don't know much about noctua fan's

      What motherboard would you suggest?

      • Sorry I can’t suggest a MB. It was just a general comment to make sure you have full feature, quality and future proof MB. In my opinion asrock and gigabyte offer better value, but asus gives you better access to the bios and I think msi is better built in general.

If you are going to spend $4k on a computer, get a better case and power supply, if the supply dies it can take the rest of the computer with it. Also add a mechanical 10tb disk for storage.

    • Thanks- do you have recommendations for a case and power supply?
      - case have heard of Phanteks P400A digital

Assuming the case and power supply are more expensive than current, what would you take away from the current setup, to maintain price?

  • If you don't know what you are going to do with your computer in the future, do not build it for the future.

  • Have you considered noise level? I think that is the main downside other than cost of getting something overpowered for what you need. Our server sounds like a 747 when it is powered on. You can good computers that only make noise when you are using the performance though.

I suggest checking out the forums.whirlpool.net.au for technical questions.

  • OK let talks about your build first..
If your motherboard has onboard wifi, u don't need another pcie wifi cards, generally speaking, pcie WiFi card will perform better with the ability to upgrade in the future,
Most of the matx motherboard only has 3 slot some have 4, but graphic card u have chosen is a large size card which will take over 2.5 slots and keep that in mind if u need a pick a matx motherboard u have to check whether u can fit another pcie wifi card or not , or just keep it simple get a standard atx motherboard
Case is very objective , mostly is the look, but some high quality case will have some other features like dust filters or noise damping materials
Water cooler will fail mostly because the pump, it may be 1 year or 5 years because it is a gift generally i will suggest get a tower CPU cooler , and if u want a water cooler I would suggest a more established company like corsair or thermaltake
as others have said may be want to add more storage , or even better a redundant set up( protect data lose in the case of hard drive fail) 1hour of 4k footage is about 40gb to 100gb already
Do you want to add a gaming monitor? A nice mechanical keyboard or gaming mouse?.my opinion is only the user will know what they actually want

I build computer for living, if u have any question about the building or the build component, feel free to ask here or pm,
