    I donated 2000 to https://effectivealtruism.org.au/, and a bit (~ 600) to a couple of other charities.

  • I think $ figure is a bit of a short sell. I donate items, such as furniture, clothing, and personal time for various causes that help the people most in need.

If you can't give money, then help out with your time or expertise.

    • nevermind.

  • street collectors in costumes, a hard way to earn a living.

  • About 500 per year for educational support of disadvantaged children. Not motivated by tax deductions though.

Mine is $2000+ to RedCross, OxFam, Cancer Council, and World Vision (monthly donation, $39/$49 each). I'm not generous at all, I just couldn't say No when they knocked on my door years (10+) ago.
Plus a few hundred to Wikimedia Foundation every year as well but that's not tax-deductible.

Wikipedia does not really need donations. According to a recent Wikimedia Foundation financial statement, less than 6 cents of each donated dollar actually goes on Internet hosting these days.

Thanks. It's good to know. But that won't stop me donating though :)

  • I sold off a pile of stuff from Feb to June as donation to bushfire relief. about $350 they buyers donated directly and $200 that the sellers gave me in cash which I then donated. yeah! $200 tax deduction for me!

    $1,000.

To a cause close to my heart (and fully tax deductible).

Must say, it felt really good to have given the money!

    I donate 100% to myself.

    Approx between $500-1000 each year.

    I'm not wealthy btw

Will never donate after I have had a look at the financial reports of a few charities. There is an obvious pattern - they tend to spend most of the money they raise from the public on admin and the cost of fundraising, then they receive 5-10 times more directly from the government - our tax money. So to me their fundraising is just a way to maintain a high public profile which enables them to milk the government for much, much, much more. You end up paying them twice: you donate a dollar and then the government, possibly because you recognized them by donating, gives them 5-10 more of your dollars.
To add insult to injury they end up sitting on piles of cash they are too clueless to spend.

You looked at a few and not happy so will not donate to any organisation ever again?

  • +2

Always over $500. RCH, beyond Blue and a few other smaller donations.

I’m not rich or poor, I can live off $10-20 less a week then happy to help.

  • About $1200, it would have been more but I really struggle finding places that need the money.

I want my dollars to have maximum impact so I look for local charities that are struggling.

    • +1

To have maximum effect give to charities recommended by the Effective Altruism organization. They recommend charities like the malaria foundation and Fred Hallows.

  • Business owners are getting tens of thousands from the government for filling out some forms online.

  • I donate throughout the year, especially when there are donations being matched.

Unsure of my total so just having a guess.

Side note - I always lose track of my donation receipts… a real pain whilst trying to lodge my tax return. Are these mandatory to provide?

    • Are these mandatory to provide?

Lol, if they weren't everyone could say they donated their entire income.

      • I have the memory of a fish so digging through emails trying to find them is exhausting.

Of course we have to provide evidence, but there's no small cap for donations like other tax related things?

Spot the dodo who doesn't lodge tax returns <- me.

    • You can claim up to $300 as a tax deduction without having to provide receipts.

  • +1

$0 as I have seen what charities look like inside… thanks but no

You're one of those people. That's a fairly weak justification to not give.

I donate $20/fn through workplace giving (I work for a not for profit Healthcare provider) which goes back to our services and toward community outreach programs. Also $25 a month to CANTEEN, $25 to Cerebral Palsy Alliance and $50 to OXFAM as well.

I'm lucky enough to have kept my job and earn enough to feel comfortable in life so didn't have to drop the values at all - it feels good to be able to give back to the community when people are struggling.

  • didn't donate for EOFY but have been on DSP donating to things i found important during the year.

  • +1

$0 as instead I volunteer my time helping the community through SES and have been doing so for 6 years now. :)

That said, if a friend ends up doing something to raise money for a cause (movember etc.) then I'll contribute to that.

  • FoodBank SA $100 and OxFam $50 in this last financial year. I ain't rich so that's enough. I think I donated the same amount the previous year too.
