How Popular Is Utopia (Aussie Series?)

just came across this on STAN a few days ago and I can't believe I never heard of it. It's probably the funniest, most realistic and firmly prodding satire I've ever seen.

Have I been living under a rock (totally possible) or is this show just not well-known? Feel like it deserves a lot more praise.

Sometimes you just need to laugh at the uncomfortable fact that your tax money is being used to pay people to invent vague solutions to non-existent problems.

Lol yes, sorry, you have been living under a rock. It’s absolutely hilarious and was very popular back as it was originally airing.

Glad you’ve finally found it though!

This is what every office job is like in my experience.

Ye can confirm. You can't even distinguish the satire most of the time.

But I love how it also takes a sly stab at other industries like tradies,
so-called experts, freelancers, security etc. Karsten is the perfect example of what's wrong with our gig economy - all just reinvented hipsters who bill you for their persona while adding no actual value.

      • There's an ep where they ask a bunch of start ups "what can the government do to help you?"

The response: "stay out of our way" :D

    • It's a documentary working in Government.

It's very good. The Hollowmen is another great series they did with the same kind of humour, set in politics. They of course also did Frontline 20 years ago, same kind of thing with a news station. Hilarious at the time, but now comes across a little dated.

  • I love it, but I will admit I didn't know about it until recently, feel like it wasn't as widely advertised as you'd think. Though I do feel like sometimes it hits a bit too close to home.

  • One of my favourite shows of all time. Almost every character is written perfectly and acted so precisely that you'd swear it was a documentary if you didn't know any better.

As a bureaucrat, I can tell you that it is a documentary.

It's the closest show I've ever seen to capture how government in Australia actually works.

It's brilliant. Also makes my blood pressure rise along with Tony's frustration levels.

    Another gem from working dog.
It's an ABC show, perhaps why not 'advertised'.
    .

  • I love it and hate it. I can't watch too much because it's too close to home xD

  • If you can, get a copy of “The Games”. A Mokumentary on the lead up to the Sydney Olympics. The late, very great, John Clarke.

    • OMG the CWA's plans for the Olympic rings with the green ring made of John Deere tractors. And the 100 metre pool that wasn't.
I need to see that show again, thanks for the reminder.

  • I don't know but the bubble tea is good.

    As a Canberran - it's a little too accurate.
