Need Suggestion for a New Router

Hi everyone,

I just moved in to a new 2 stories apartment and im looking to buy a new router. I have NBN connection in my apartment and last time i was on the phone with Aussie Broadband i think they told me i had FTTP.
I was looking through and did some search and found few routers like Tplink Archer AX3000 and Asus AX88U, i dont know much about these could someone give me a few suggestions?

I typically use my internet for gaming/studying, might stream here and there as well. I will be connecting my cameras, a smart TV, phones/laptop, pc, Alexa Amazon speaker, a few Phillips hue light bulb and LED light strips that is going to be connected to the internet all the time so a router that can manage this workload well would be great. I have friends and family over occasionally and they tend to use the internet a lot.

Sorry for the long words, thanks in advance

Edit: I’ve decided to buy the Amazon Eero (2 of them) since the 1 pack is on sale and way cheaper to get it comparing to the 3 packs. Might reconsider and change to the Amplifi HD. Thanks all

  • How much do you want to spend? And what's your level of IT/networking proficiency?

    • im looking to spend around 300$, im not too familiar with IT/networking but i can follow instruction and learn pretty fast

TP-Link Deco M5 or AmpliFi HD by Ubiquiti Labs.

        • I’ll look into this, haven’t seen anyone recommended a router that have wifi 6. is it not worth it to get atm?

@idobebrowsing: Right now not many things have wifi 6 and wifi 6 is in draft specification.

I’ve got the Netgear Orbis and I would highly recommend them. I’ve also heard amazon’s erros are pretty good as well if you can find them cheap.

    • i looked into the amazon eero but it doesnt seem to have the WAN port to connect to my NBN box, the orbis price is way out of my budget ~300$

eero has 2 auto sensing WAN/LAN ports.

oh really, i’ll put this into consideration then, thanks

  • ASUS RT-AC68U. An ozbargain favourite.

    • yeah i’ve seen a lot of people recommenced this and the AC86U as well

I had this nethawk device I think from net gear I took it back after 1 day because I couldn't get the signal I wanted out my backyard for streaming. I ended up buying this google nest mesh with 2 access points with the package and that fixed my wifi signal immediately and has a great coverage. It isn't easy to get smart lights connected through Google wifi though I had to use my other non google branded acesspoint set at 2.4ghz freq to setup my lights and I think that ap has to stay on but I removed all my other devices from connecting to that ap. Also with the google mesh outside I am noticing gaming lags in overwatch so I put the pc inside and my Android TV box outside like a swap of locations :p.

    • will it work with amazon alexa and stuff like that?

I’m on FTTN and I use a Fritzbox and Ubiquiti AmpliFi mesh system. Best combo I’ve used so far.

I was looking at the Ubiquiti AnpliFi system too, I take since its consumer grade you don't need a cloud key?

      • The CK is not used with AmpliFi.

    • its a but pricey for my budget right now (~400$)

        The AmpliFi HD is $269.

oh i’ve been looking around and the ones that i saw was at 600$, ill have another look, cheers

          • @idobebrowsing: You don't need the 3 piece system for an apartment.

            • @Twix: so would you recommend this or the one from amazon or tp link

              • +1

@idobebrowsing: All of them are suitable. The AmpliFi HD has the most WAN/LAN ports if it matters to you.

          • +1

@idobebrowsing: That’s the 3 unit kit. Which is what I got since my house is big. But the single unit is fine for apartment use.

            • @omguleh: I decided to go with the Amazon Eero since it fits right in my budget, was tempting to pull the trigger on the Amplifi but was afraid that it might not reach the second floor

  • If you're willing to be a little bit technical, get a Ubiquiti NanoHD. You'll still need a router, but you can use any that you have lying around.

I've got Netgear Orbis, which are great. But if I were to do it again I'd go with Ubiquiti.

For core networking, it's best to stick with known brands and avoid anything from China. But this is just a home setup so you may be willing to sacrifice some privacy/security to save a few dollarbucks.

    • I was going to get the Amplifi Hd but decided to go for the Amazon Eero
