What FPS Do You Game at?

Was just reading one of the deals for a deep monitor, was only 1440p and also only 60hz, I know there are other considerations when choosing a monitor but op specifically mentioned that this "was not suitable for gaming".

I game at 60 and I'll lower the resolution to target it, just curious what y'all do now adays.

Please note, and it IS an imperfect system, but I'm ONLY asking what FPS you taget, not resolution, not medium ,high or low settings etc. Afterall, I had a CRT monitor doing 120hz in the 90s, LCDs are pretty much playing catch up in that regard.

Too many options, I need MS Paint diagram.

CRT monitors could also used as a boat anchor

  • 1080p @ 60fps without vsync. 32:9 monitor makes the 1070 work hard. Monitor can do 1440p @ 120hz but 1070 isn't sufficient, need to upgrade to the 20xx series.

    Where's the 75hz option?

  • +2

    1440p @ 144hz

  • 1080p@144 for comp games, 1080p@60 for everything else

  • 1440p @ 144Hz
I can’t always get this though so I generally sacrifice FPS to maintain resolution.

I have three monitors so I use 240Hz, 100Hz and 60hz depending on games.

240Hz is competition or fast paced games.

100Hz is driving on an ultrawide.

    60Hz is a 4K TV.

Saying 60Hz is non-suitable is incorrect but higher hertz means higher temporal resolution.

Afterall, I had a CRT monitor doing 120hz in the 90s, LCDs are pretty much playing catch up in that regard.

LCDs are playing catch up in almost all regards other than size (screen size) and wasted space (CRTs have a lot of physical depth) and shipping sensitivity. Everywhere else CRT is superior.

    • I want an ultrawide, sometimes I play 2560x1080 on a 4k monitor, with black bars at the bottom.

      • Ultrawides are great. Didn't realise how much I'd prefer an ultrawide to two side-by-side 16:9 monitors until I got mine. Fantastic for both gaming and productivity. Much better for posture and ergonomics too.

        • Yeah, all my housemates went out for the day so I stole all their monitors and set up eyefinitity and played Jurassic Park Evolution. I couldn't do that long-term though, the black bar down the centre of the screen (between monitors) is too distracting.

    15FPS on N64

  • My monitor is capped at 60hz, none the less I am amazingly, if I say so myself, amazingly good at Call of Duty & I don't feel like I am wanting higher specs for my monitor. However, having said that, people always say once go go to a higher refresh rate in combination with a high FPS you never look back.

I sort of get it as when I play Stunt Race FX on SNES I wonder how the hell I played it at 10fps, yet at the time I didn't think it was such a big deal.

Ignorance is bliss! As long as your having fun, at least you know that theirs a potent upgrade just waiting for a $500 cash splurge!

"What FPS Do You Game at?" Wow, thought my england was bad.

  • Does a Vic-20 have an FPS setting?

  • 24fps for that cinematic experience

    • i capped Tomb Raider (2013) at 45 fps the first time i played it. It seemed to be an acceptable compromises, and i didn't have the best hardware at the time.

  • "I like the Wii'

I play on 1440p 144hz with gsync. Monitor is Acer predator XB271HU and gpu is GTX 1080ti

  • I too had a giant power hogging IIyama CRT with 2048*1536 resolution which I used to play Crysis back in the day (obviouslynot at maximum resolution though). Now just targetting 720p @ 60fps

  • Don't play competitively, so anything north of 60 is generally fine for me. Monitor can do up to 120, and has G-Sync, so don't need to worry about what frame rate is actually being output. I play ultrawide, so depending on the game I go between 3440x1440 and 2560x1080.

Side note, can't wait until more games have "target FPS" options, or use DLSS. Both Control and Doom Eternal have been recent examples of amazing games that make the most whatever your GPU has to offer by using DLSS or target FPS options.

All these Vsync, nonvsync, capping options can be done away with if you just get G-sync/Freesync and forget about it. I am happy with anything 100fps+ but certain games (Path of Exile, World of Warcraft etc) that are 'normally' running along at 100+fps will have occasional wild swings in frame rate down to maybe 30. G-sync helps drastically in those scenarios by making it still look OK as there's no screen tearing or stuttering.

    • Yup. Was the biggest revelation with my new monitor. No more choosing between crappy vsync input lag and screen tearing, just smooth display, no matter the frame rate.
