Samsung QX412-S01AU - $799 + $10 postage

This laptop goes for $1100 most places, saw it on JB site, among others.

I just bought this very laptop, 2 weeks ago, paid exactly $810 for a mint condition display model from WOW Sight & Sound, lol. (haggled down from $899 original display model price)
Very happy with it though. Very thin, aluminium construction, gun metal highlights.

If you're looking for a sleek small laptop, with Core i5 2nd gen, USB 3.0, Bluetooth 3.0+HS, 1GB Graphics, Optical drive, really thin, then this is for you. It's a 14" screen, but it's the size of most 13.3" laptops!

4GB DDR3 (on BD 2GB + 2GB)

  • "Up to 9hrs battery life" so this is with everything turned off/low and with idle desktop right? how many hours playing a game or dvd movie?

    • We all know that laptop specs list the max battery life, because that's the only way to get a controlled test, to compared against other laptops.
About 6hrs with normal use, maybe 5hrs of DVD viewing.

I've got 10% charge left on mine now, and i've used it for 3hrs last night, and 2hrs 45min tonight. It says it's got another 32mins left. EDIT: On 6%, with 27mins left now.
Mainly internet use (wifi), some software installations, a couple of video playback, some word processing. Screen on 40% brightness.
I don't know if you're going to find better battery life in a Core i5 laptop.

This laptop was $1400, 4-6mths ago.

  • Yeah what he said

Damn thats pretty good. I love my QX-310 which I got back in February, and this is like a heaps upgraded version…

Samsung laptops are the best :) but the upper models are so expensive :S (Still better value than macs lol)

    • "samsung laptops are the best" are you kidding me? I suggest you read cnet reviews.

      • which ones? cnet isn't the ultimate authority.

Samsung has very high quality standards, and imo they typically design their laptops better than competitors. Spec wise you can do a lot better with competitors, but the whole package isn't necessarily better. Every time I look at an ASUS/HP/Toshiba, all I see is them chucking a bunch of powerful components on a generic chassis. I like the finish and integration of components that is found in samsung products. To me samsung is like non stuck-up version of apple.

Not to mention, since they make half the components themselves (given the size and breadth of their electronic division), they tend to have a technological edge over their competitors (in some respects - not CPUs/GPUs, but in screens, ssds, bluetooth etc etc)

EDIT: I don't mean this is true for all samsung laptops though. Theres always going to be some good ones and some duds. Their upper line looks amazing though! Series 9 mmmmmm

        • That is your personal opinion and I respect that but having worked in the IT industry myself for over 15 years I know alot of people see differently.

If you want quality HP makes some of the best quality PC/laptops and if you are comparing Apple laptops with another brand I would say Sony Vaio as they make similar quality as Apple and with very classy elegant designs. Sure it's pricey but what you pay is what you get. Besides I do not see anything special about Samsung designs - they are generic as any other brands out there.

There are many other reviewers out there like Zdnet and Engadget just to name a few that you can read.

  • Does it have an expresscard slot?

    • No it doesn't, not many laptops do these days. The only one i saw that did was a Sony, and not all of the Sony's had them. It's pretty rare. I am dissapointed, because i've got an express card slot TV tuner which i wanted to use.
I think i'll have to get one of those mini usb one's instead.

      • Cheers mate :) Yeh, not many hav one prolly to save on space. I guess a thinner laptop is a better selling point than a slot which people rarely utilise.

The intention is that I can hook up an external video card using the Vidock & the expresscard slot. Smoother gaming on a 24" monitor + bragging rights ;)

The 14" Dell Vostros hav one, but the laptop's larger & costs more compared to this Samsung :/

$799 for this laptop seems expensive especially it's only a Samsung. This should be cheaper.

  • How does this compare to the Samsung 350U2B-A03 from orangeIT for $699 (in store) - says $750 on website but I saw it yesterday for $699

12.5" screen, i5 2.9GHz, 4Gb Ram and only 1.27kg inc battery (8 -10 hrs apparently) - much more portable at that weight

    • The processor is exactly the same, it's the 2410M. You see, it's a 2.3Ghz processor, able to use Turbo Boost technology to reach 2.9Ghz. Same one in my laptop, OrangeIT have just been sneaky with their advertising.

I can't find this laptop on the Samsung website, so not sure on the specs. It doesn't have an optical drive, so it's a different machine, very impressive though.

    • Plus, no independant graphics card.

few weeks back. the DSE deal for HP was heaps better than this one. not a bargain.

    • Which deal? Please link.

    • -1

HP laptops are cheap but you can't go past Samsung for quality.

    • The only HP deal/s from DSE that i can see on OzBargain is for 15.6" laptops. Correct me if i'm wrong, or are you comparing apples with oranges?
      Please link.

      • There is a better deal to be had which is posted today http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/54809#comment-624330 for a HP i7 for $705.95 delivered. HP makes some of the best quality PCs around.

        • Yeah that's a good deal. But the Core i7 laptops have bad battery life. Plus that 14" is not as small, thin, or light as the samsung. So it's not for everyone.
No Bluetooth 3.0+HS by the looks of it, and the webcam isn't HD.

I hear a bit of talk about HP laptops with poor build quality on that page (plus in general), i don't think your opinion that Samsung is a bad brand, and HP is the best brand, is unfounded.

HP quality. My keys stopped working after 1 week. also fan is noisy. a bit heavier that normal 14inch laptops.

          | don' believe HP's quality but it's a good deal in price

its a good deal for a 14" laptop but my experience of HP build quality is that its pretty average (although their latest models are getting better)
