New customer means porting from other provider ? Or completely new number ? When the voucher expires please ?

    • +2

I recently ported over to Kogan from Catch Connect to this deal but it said the voucher was invalid. This was because I had already been a 'customer' at Kogan so I couldn't use this voucher. However, the person I was talking to on the phone made an exception for me and allowed me to use the voucher, but in the future, I wouldn't be able to utilise this deal. not sure if this has happened to anyone else

      • I've ported Catch Connect <—> Kogan two or three times now and haven't had a problem..

        • +1

Yeah I've done it multiple times as well (switching from Catch to Kogan) but for some reason this time I wasn't able to. But before I used the 30 Day SIM instead of the 90 Day one. Not sure if that would make a difference.

          • +1

@KDOZ: I don't think it should make a differnce. I've always used the 90 day SIM

          • @KDOZ: I think that does make a difference, I don't think you can port back in as a new customer in under a month after you port out, otherwise people could just get $2 sims and port out and back in immediately. I can't remember where I got that impression from, but it was probably on here somewhere, I've been doing it on the 90 day sims for ages now. I need the Catch one to come back in the next month or so or I'll have to use the Boost voucher I've got waiting for just such an occasion. :)

          • +1

@KDOZ: That would definitely be the difference. The one and only time I had the same issue (and also had the Kogan representative apply an exception for me) was when I made the mistake of doing a 30 day catch connect deal, instead of the 90. I think you have to have not had your number with Kogan for somewhere between 30-35 days to no longer be considered a current customer.

            • @Mr Idiom: I found it out today in my own exp. It has to be 31 days as minimum.

I ported out a number from Kogan on 27th May and it did not let me to use 30 days new cusotmer plan yesterday by saying "invalid voucher", but allows the voucher today, 27th June.

          • @KDOZ: Yes it makes a difference from 30 days to 60 days porting as same thing happened to me during after 30 days of porting, But 60 days is ok as i could do it twice now and again attempting for next month back from catch to kogan. hopefully it should be fine even now.

      • Yes, this has happened to me. They keep a record now. So you can't just simply port out and port back in.

  • Price?

  • Should put the price in the title - this is good value for $14.90 + $2 for the sim!

    • $2 sim normally included

    • It includes SIM

  • Price/savings in title would help and part of the posting guidelines

    • +1

      Is it ok now?

  • -1

when do you need to activate it by if ordered now?

    • As above

  • Ahh, similar to this without needing to port over
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/540109

Not for existing customers, but shorter expiry time.

Yeah I just noticed that Kogan has shorten the expiry date on this Sim deal. Expiry date use to be 31/12/2020

  • +1

Hello ladies and gentlemen. This popular 90days mobile deal from Kogan is back. This is a "New Customers Only", so no need to port over. Enjoy all. :)

i think you mean you will need to port over as its restricted to new customers only?

    • +1

There are 2 ways to become a "new customer". Either you get a new number or you port over from another provider and become Kogan's "new" customer.

      • +2

Which still means you need to port in if you want to retain your number

        • That's correct. You can't have your number in 2 different providers can you.

      • But who wants a new number… unless you need a burner?

        • +6

I have a dual sim phone, first is a pay-as-you-go for calls (I very rarely make calls so it's very cost effective) and second is usually one of these "new customer" deals for very cheap data. I swap in a new SIM every 1-3 months, number doesn't matter because it's just for data.

          • @smmoove: But you still get free calls and texts with the data plan, i struggle to see the value in holding 2 sims, given you're paying for calls that are included in the secondary sim.

            • +2

@Drakesy: Sure but the extra $10 a year or whatever to keep my number on the PAYG sim is worth not having to port over my number constantly. Also you can't consecutively use the "new customer deals" with a single sim, because they have requirements like "you can't port over this number if it had been with Kogan within the last 30 days".

I do use the 2nd number occasionally for signing up to things or making a call to a support line since it doesn't matter which number I'm using.

            • +1

@Drakesy: In rare cases, it's possible that your primary number might get stuck in a limbo during porting (some users on Whirlpool have experienced this). If the limbo period exceed a certain threshold of days, you can lose your primary number and will have to go through the pain of updating it everywhere.

So it's better / safer to have your primary number locked in with a PAYG 365 day plan ($10 plans available) - and use secondary SIM for new customer deals like @smmoove mentioned.

    • +7

I think the description is confusing.

Should say "you can either port your existing number across, or get a new number, but it can't be an existing Kogan number already".

      • -2

Hi Benni. I believe not often you can find new good mobile deals for existing customer. Myself left Vodafone after more than 15 years as a loyal customer. In occasions I even had more than one yearly accounts with them. But when I asked whether I could get the 12 months $35/month with unlimited data and 1.5mbs after 20GB, they said sorry but NO. I was thinking after more than 15years (maybe close to 20years) I could not get a same deal as a "new" customer. Well no more postpaid account/s with Vodafone anymore…

        • +4

cool story bro, but how does it relate to the comment you replied to?

          • @n0mad: I'm sorry if anyone found that confusing. I have edited that onto the description. However, I maybe haven't spotted any post here on Ozbargain about a good mobile deal for existing customers yet so I thought everyone should know it by know.

            • +2

@Lone star: You seem to be misunderstanding what a couple people are telling you about the description.

              Your sentence is incorrect.

This is a "New Customers Only", so no need to port over.

              should be changed to

This is a "New Customers Only", so you need to port over.

              • +1

@veriiT: OK, I understand now. Thank you, I have edited the description now.

  • +2

Thanks OP. Perfect for my new laptop with a sim port in it. It will help during those times that my NBN is dropping out during Teams calls lol.

  • +5

Don't forget to disable auto-recharge after you succesfully activate the SIM. Got stung once with a $99 recharge.

    • Best thing is to port out to another good deal before the 90 days. I am doing it with 4 accounts I look after currently.

  • The spam email I got about this says this price ends on 30/06/2020.

    • I haven't got that email so I can't confirm with you sorry.

  • +1

i wish we can get discounts on old customers too

    • +1

Yes indeed I wished that too. After almost 20years with same service provider and they still couldn't give me same discount as a "new" customer… :(

      • +2

Same here ! When I called up to enquire, they gave me a firm “NO” and even offered to help me port out on the spot ! When I told them to hold on first, they said “ok I will put a note in your account that you will be porting out” (??!!!!??) Blows my mind 🤯

    • +3

I've given up on the whole 'customer loyalty' thing and started to use pre-paid and SIM hop from month to month like many Ozbargainers here. It is a bit of a pain in the ass given that I'm constantly porting my number, and I have to set reminders on my calendar of the last day of the pre-paid period; but it has saved me a lot of money so it has been worth it.

Since I started SIM hopping, my mobile phone bill is around an average of less than $6-8 per month; and I always have much more data than I can possibly use per month.

      • +1

Haha.. I've just started SIM hop for myself. But I've done it for my missus and her parents since March 2019. From next February I'll also will be doing for my son. He'll start high school then. About keeping track. I've got a small palm notepad where I've written down all details needed. :)

        • Physical notepad or… Palm Pilot?

          If the latter, r-e-s-p-e-c-t.

      • +1

Get yourself a dual Sim phone, way less hassle! No need to port any numbers. I just have my main number on a $10/year amaysim plan and for my 2nd Sim I get the Kogan $5/month for 40gb plan. Literally works out to be $6/month the entire year as oppossed to I was paying Optus $50/month before wow..

        • How do you get $4.90/month Kogan 40GB plan each month? What do you port out/in to each time? Or you register a new number each time?

          • @djoz: I register a new number, my phone has 2 sims so I can just plop the new number in to make calls and for data.

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: This is fine if you don't mind confusing the hell out of everyone you call with a different number all the time. Then you end up having to explain what's going on to someone you may not want them to know.

  • Pathetic, 3 mpbs internet speed!

    • +1

Maybe because your location and timeframe.

  • What is the service like? Siiittttt!!!!!!!

    • +2

I believe only Telstra network is best here in Australia, but yet there has been people complaining about Telstra. So it must be where you are located at.

      • +1

Telstra network is definitely the best network at least for 4G and 3G and I am assuming 5G as well. I changed from boost mobile who use Telstra to Optus this year and can definitely notice the difference mainly in the upload speed which is painfully slow on Optus and has only been made worse with a lot more people working from home

  • If something never left, it cannot be back

  • I activated Kogan sim on 22 June 2020,request to port my number port from Catch Connect but until not nothing happen! I contact Kogan Mobile through the web support, after asked for pin then heard nothing from them now. Any other way I can get help for this matter?

    • Were you with Kogan before you went to Catch Connect? Some people have stated that if you port out and back in to Kogan within 30 days, you won't be accepted or something like that…

      • Never with Kogan before!

        • +2

If your Catch plan was still active at that time, you should have responded to a SMS from Kogan with a 7-digit code for authorization. Don't take the Catch SIM out until port is done.

          • +1

@Neoika: Agree. The new porting rules require replying to the SMS, which also means you need credit in your existing SIM, which is kinda a pain. Earlier, Catch Connect / Kogan SIMs without any credit or active plan used to stay valid upto 6 months or more. You could still port over.

I have ported a Kogan SIM, without any credit or active plan for 6 months, to Amaysim and it did not require any reply to SMS back then (Mid-2019).

            • +1

@djoz: Just adding my experience to the mix. Tried to port from Catch to Kogan before Sunday as that was when the Catch credit expired. However my SIM was still on the way but I had a spare. The spare SIM was no longer valid so had to wait for the one in the post.

Yesterday it arrived but my activation was after their support hours. The SMS came through but I couldn't reply because the credit has expired.

So today I rang support expecting to do the manual port but upon checking, support advised me that the port already went through. So it has somehow worked without having to reply to their SMS.

Also, Kogan support is quick to answer the call and so far, have been able to resolve the problem on the spot. Seems to have improved.

              • @lomie: 2 week later, finally ported successful today. I did a speed test and the result is bad compared to Catch i use before. It is normal for download speed ~7Mbps and upload speed~8Mbps?

  • Ah well, all the Kogan 90-day deals have all gone Out of Stock. Now what? Just hoping they get similar offers soon.

  • +1

    Available again*

    • Thank you. I have updated it.

  • Ported into Kogan using a sim received from this deal however I get a notification "Sim not provisioned for voice" upon turning on the phone and cannot use data, or make/receive calls or sms.

I've tried cleaning the sim, restarting the phone multiple times, even tried with a second kogan sim with no luck.

I pop in my Telstra sim and it works fine. Anyone else with similar issues?

    • What phone are you using?

      • Samsung note 8

        • +1

I think the SIM you received is faulty. I have used maybe 10+ Kogan SIMs and never got any problems. Try to contact Kogan to issue you a new SIM.

          • @Lone star: I think so. Received two SIMs from purchasing this deal twice. Tried transferring my service to the second SIM - the only difference is that sometimes the kogan sign at the top in the provider symbol shows for about a second when I reset after re inserting the sim. Very strange that I may have received two faulty SIMs.
I bought two more sims from the local United petrol station tonight, will be contacting Kogan in the morning to try them out.

  • How many days given before your SIM gets diconnected/disabled once the recharge expires?
    - planning on keeping the number so I liek to know how many days before I can switch to another prepaid provider with promo.
    - preferred long days like amaysim which is 1 yr beforethey disconnect your number but amaysim doesnt provide any $5/month promo.

    • Sorry I don't know that answer. I almost always just port my number over to other providers. Anyway here's a deal not quite as cheap as $5 but it's only around $7.00+.
Condition is that you have to activate the Sim within 30 days of purchase to claim the $3.00
Here's how to do it. If you already have a Cashrewards account then it's good, if not you'll have to create one. It's free of charge. Bare in mind you won't get instant cashback, but you'll have to wait for some time. However AmaySim has a promotion currently (expires 31/07/20). $30 Sim now cost $10 shipped. You have to use your Cashrewards account and buy the AmaySim through there.

      https://www.amaysim.com.au/plans/mobile-plans/unlimited-medi…

      https://www.cashrewards.com.au/amaysim-mobile

      • thanks. I didnt know you canget back $3 if you buy the regular amaysim from cashrewards.
I like amaysim as it keeps your numbe/sim active for 12 months afer expiry of credit.
Good to keep multiple sim/number you want to keep before you are force to recharge/swap.

But, it is better if i get referred since i am getting $10 rewards?
Is it possible to buy from cashrewards and gets referred at the same time ?

        • +1

Again another question I don't know the answer for sorry… hehe
Well you could try to contact Cashrewards and ask them.
