  • All these Philips sales, what's up?

    • +9

New models coming out with better specs, features, built in Bluetooth (without needing Hue Bridge) etc.

      • without needing Hue Bridge

        that seems surprising

        • The catch is that you only get basic functionality, it won't get all the features of the bridge. And you can't connect to the lights if you're not in bluetooth range.

          • @Astronaut Joe: Just to make it clear for other readers, from what I understand, the new Bluetooth model still supports the Hue Bridge/Zigbee and all it's functions.

So you can start with just a bulb and rely on BT and upgrade to a bridge later.

            • @ilu: Yes, if I wasn't clear, the new bulbs support the hub and all the functions that it provides. Without the hub the capability of the bulbs via BT is more limited.

And, of course, you can always run them as a dumb bulb via the regular on/off switch!

      • Do you know how far off? The new downlights look cool

        • They're already out, probs just shipping around during Covid is the issue.

          • +2

@TogTogTogTog: Just asked philips, they won’t be releasing them in Oz :(

            • @liveish: Dang. I know you can get them shipped here but not via Phillips.

To be honest, for the extra cost, you're better off buying a Hub (or just running a third-party hub) and older model lights. The only reason to consider the new bulbs is if you don't have wifi.

              • @TogTogTogTog: I liked the colour downlights just for the tv room and outside ( wank factory and keep away the bugs with a yellowish light)

        • The bulbs Amazon are selling are the new models with Bluetooth, so they are here.
The starter kits (bulbs plus hub and sometimes switch) seem to be old model bulbs.
We don't get all the new stuff America gets, since they decide it's not worth it for the voltage. I'd jump at 240V BR30 Hue bulbs!

Good price on the dimmer! I was about to post it!

  • +5

Bought play though don't know what for

    • ha, my finger wavering over the single extension bar too for $68… has been $12 cheaper before…I should just go to bed

  • Picked up a couple of dimmer switches. I've been waiting for these. Thanks OP!

  • +1

Be pretty decent to get Bunnings to price beat the 2pk play bars to $114… special order there, but should be able to do it (depending on who you get at the desk etc). Just a question if Amazon sells out first maybe!

    • Does Bunnings price beat if special order?

      • heard mixed reports, never tried myself but I reckon they are obliged to based on their T&Cs etc!

        • Yes they price beat on s o items

          • @Dex38313: Few weeks ago, Marsden Park NSW Bunnings refused to price match saying that they only price match/beat in stock items.

            • @raptorfan7: Policy is on stocked items (ie. Not special orders). Would be a store-by-store decision probably, often S.O will match however.

              • @kezza77: the way I read the combo of price beat and special order policies is that it must be in stock at the competitor; special orders can be cancelled if not 'in stock' (at supplier). But would be a battle to argue if they refused.

                • +1

@gazer: Yeah when they refer to the pricing policy they dictate "on the same stocked item" or "on the same in stock item" which normally refers to both stores in question (Bunnings and the competitor) both stocking the item.
From experience most stores will match it regardless, so certainly would suggest anyone who's interested to give the local store a call and try it. Nothing to lose I suppose!

  • Thoughts on these vs IKEA ones?

    • +1

Keep in mind. Whichever you get, you will be stuck into that ecosystem.

      • +1

Not if you get a third party zigbee hub

      • You can use the Ikea ones with the hue bridge.

        • Most of the time. I have a Tradfri bulb that refuses to connect to my Hue bridge no matter what I try.

  • dammit, i bought 2 of these play packs just last week at 151 each, jumped the gun :(

    • same here, wonder if i could return and re-order again but seems like too much hassle

      • Just message Amazon, I've had this issue in the past and they should refund the difference.

        • I bought the 2x Play last week for $159. I've messaged/emailed Amazon through the app so I'll report back with what they're willing to do.

        • i actually bought it from officeworks. i got them to price match bunnings price and i was pretty chuffed coz i thought that was a great price. wonder if officewoks would refund the dfference.

  • +2

So to get this to active sync with my gaming console for the living room, i need to buy a Hue Bridge ($55) and Hue Sync Box ($335)?? Come on OzBargainers is this really worth it?

    • +7

It does look fantastic when setup properly:

      2) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyvbfEC1SVA

If you already have a large OLED TV and proper ATMOS surround system then this is the next money sink before PS5 launches.

      • +6

I just don't know if a pair of lights is worth the likely price of a PS5 (~$500-600). Can't help but feel like I am being gouged.

But if you can afford it, more power to you.

      • that looks cool but would I need a TV with built in ambilight to create result like this or is the play bar sufficient to achieve similar effect? Also, how much space is needed for the play bar as my TV is mounted on the wall?

        • +5

Putting them behind a wall mounted TV doesn't work well mate. I've got them and you really need to have them sitting about 30cm away from the wall to give a good effect. If they're too close the hotspot is bright but small with not much bleed onto the rest of the wall.

          • @bataleon: ok thank you, thats what I thought.

          • @bataleon: I wonder what the performance of the lightstrip would be like by comparison? Likely cheaper to line 3 sides of the TV with the Hue strip than 3 bars.

            • +1

@gazer: Here's a decent comparison between the two mate. The strip puts out 1600 Lumens whereas the Light Bar only puts out 530 Lumens. The strip will definitely be cheaper yes, as you can buy 1 meter extension kits and daisy chain until you get your desired length. https://www.macrumors.com/review/review-philips-hue-play/#:~….

              • +1

@bataleon: cheers mate, actually saw that one meself last night! Looks like lying flat on tv bench pointed up wall has the least hot spot effect, where the strip is more subtle. surprising, given the brightness difference on spec sheets really

    • For a TV setup, yeah you will need the Hue Sync Box and a Bridge if you don't have one. For a PC setup you can use the Hue Sync app instead of the Sync Box which is pretty pricey.

    • Where can I get the Hue Sync Box?

    • If you have an appletv, grab the MrMC media player app. Supports hue so at least you can watch movies and sync your lights without the $355 box.

      • -1

Anything you can view on a PC screen can do the colour matchig to the Hue.

  • +11

The Play pack and dimmer both qualify for the “Save 20% on Smart Home Product when you purchase 1 or more Echo” sale too. Luckily was in the market for an Echo, which brought the Play bars down to $101.76! Thx OP!

    • Thanks for this. Didn't know they were doing this again.

  • ONly after the PLay Bars to add to my PC setup, it meshes perfectly with Razer Synapse.

  • So you also need to spend $53.20 on the Hue Hub to make this work?

  • +1

Anyone got these? The reviews say that you can't sync to your TV and that the sync only works with pcs and gaming machines.

    • +2

There is a seperate box called hue sync box that you buy for your tv. It’s not on amazon Au yet

    • +1

You can (and I do). Basically anything you'd cast needs to display on your PC too. For example: Cast from VLC to TV, use PC to do colour matching and send to Hue, add like 100ms delay, done.

    • As per some comments above, you can sync to TV but you need to buy a Sync Box, which currently costs around $350 from googling. That's on top of the $50 you need to buy a Hue Bridge for the lights ($127) to even work.

  • Got it awesome 👏

  • thx got the Philips Hue Play Bar Light 2pk plus the echo show 8 for the total of 230

  • +7

The official Philips Hue Facebook page have confirmed that the Hue Sync box will launch in Australia on 1 October 2020. Dunno if people were aware of this, but I thought I’d pass it along!

    • Thanks for the info. I thought it would be shipped early 2020

  • +5

Is there a better example of discretionary spending?

  • Can you use them as bias lighting for computer monitors?

  • For a little more you have a switch and a bulb for $27

    https://www.davidjones.com/philips-hue-dim-kit-95w-a60-21294…

    • +1

      Doesn't look available to purchase.

  • Should I buy this or light strip plus for TV?

    • Light strip would give you more light.

      • +2

Light strip looks better on the back of a TV or monitor. I have a couple of play lights behind our tv but think my mates lightstrip is far sleeker, brighter, and has 3 sides of colour (top) rather than just left and right.

  • no strip on sale :(

    • +4

$89.10 with Bunnings price beat against JB Hi-Fi $99.00

      • +1

thanks but i think i might wait until it drops further, they were around 65 last year at bunnings..

  • I've had the Hue Colour bulbs in my wishlist for years, I was going to buy some Ikea lamps to accommodate the bulbs for accent lighting, finally just pulled the trigger on these instead, I've already spent way too long pondering, haha. Cheers OP.

  • Has anyone used the downlights before? Wondering what kind of lifecycle I should expect - $50 each adds up when you've got 15 downlights!

    • I'm personally waiting for their coloured ones which are meant to be coming soon.

    • They're LED's so they should outlast a typical downlight by a very long shot. Apparently their lifespan is about 35,00 0 hours, so even if using it 10 hours a day they should last about 9.5 years.

  • +1

Philips Hue Play Bar Light 2pk (Base Kit) now showing as $219.

    • Yeah, I couldn't for the life of my find the reduced price. The single bar packs, yes, but not the double.

  • +1

Dimmer Switch now showing as $28.00

  • DONT FORGET

Get 20% off select Smart Home products when you purchase an Echo device plus an eligible Smart Home product in a single transaction. Add both the items to cart and the discount will be automatically applied at checkout. Offered by Amazon AU. Here's how (terms and conditions apply)

I added the "Introducing Echo Show 8 - HD 8" smart display with Alexa - Sandstone Fabric" and ending up paying only like $30 for it.

  • +1

    PLAY BAR DEAL IS GONE!

You can still add the Play Bar (base) + Extension + Echo for for $163.

  • +1

Deal over? It's $219 for me.

  • Do the new bluetooth enabled lights also have better colour? e.g. the GU10's that currently dont do colour very well..

  • Is there a better option for somebody who wants to backlight their PC monitor setup but isn't interested in using voice control? Or is this still a good option?

    • +1

add the Play Bar (base) + Extension + Extension and you will be happy, thats a sick setup

      • Extension for the Play Bar?

        • +1

yeah then you have 3 of them and can have individual lights for each part of the screen. i guess maybe you need 4 :P

          • +1

@191919: Ahhhhh gotcha! That'd look pretty great

          • +1

@191919: An extra base back would be needed to do 4, because the transformer only supports 3.

      • Play bar twin pack plus extension would have been 195.80, before they put the price back up.
Play bar single plus 2x extension currently will be 211.10.

So you can still get a reasonable deal on 3 lights. Annoying, but still cheaper than anywhere else right now.

        • aaaaaaaaaand….now you can't. Single bar and extension kits have gone back to 'normal' prices ($119 and $79).

    • I'm in the same boat as you. Had my eyes on these for months and was finally about to pull the trigger last week when I decided not to.

Like you, I only wanted some backlighting for my PC monitor and for it to sync with my games and movies. I don't find it worth paying extra for the smart controls of these Play Bars + buying a bridge when I don't intend to dive into the whole Hue ecosystem with the bulbs.

I'm waiting for a good sale for the Logitech G560 speakers. They have lights on the back of them, which can provide some backlighting for your monitor. The reviews are solid, they'll sync with anything on your monitor in screen sampler mode, they have custom gaming profiles for a lot of games (eg. red lights when low health in BF1, red and blue flashing lights when you're wanted in GTA V, etc.)

Currently the cheapest is $199 at EBGames here: https://www.ebgames.com.au/product/pc/240033-logitech-g560-l…. RRP is $300.

They've come down to $150 at JB Hi Fi in the past, according to OzBargain so I'll be waiting for a deeper discount ;) haha

So while these Play Bars work really well, it might be overkill in my opinion, unless you can see yourself getting into the whole Hue ecosystem.

      • I was in the same boat and almost pulled the trigger on the g560 before getting on the great 1700bt Edifier deal. Read up on the g560 and it suffers from significant software issues as Logitech doesn’t seem to be interested in supporting it. That and the play bars support razer integration sealed the deal.

  • People in comments above saying light strip is better, brighter (and obviously much cheaper). What's the advantage (if any) of the Play Bar over light strips?

    • +4

Leaving price out of the equation, I find flexibility of the play bar to be a significant advantage over the strips. Having to apply the strips to the back of the TV is too much hassle for me and I hate how the strips look ugly at the corners when you apply it. It's just the OCD in me that can't handle it.
I have Lifx strip and I still haven't stuck it on. It's just hanging behind the TV around the TV mount.

      • +1

I'm same, had strips and recently bought the bars also. Prefer the bars so much more. They just look way cleaner and are more functionably. When I did my previous research, the concensus was the strips just produce a bit more brightness.

        • In terms of brightness, I was left very disappointed with Hue strips compared to the Lifx counterpart.

          • @keejoonc: Old Hue Strips were RGB.
The new one (released few years ago) is RGBW. It is much brighter in "white" mode.

            • @SickDmith: I had the new ones. Still wasn't anywhere near the brightness of Lifx.

        • Lightstrip specs say 1600 lumens/20W vs 600 lumens/6.6W for bars? Seems big brightness difference?
