Does anyone have any experience with buying gift cards using their credit card, does it generally get treated as a cash advance? I checked the terms & conditions of my card and it doesn't explicitly say so, but some info online suggests most credit card providers would treat such a purchase as a cash advance. Ultimately I'll give my credit card helpdesk a call to confirm, but just interested if other OzBargainers already know of how their credit card providers treat such purchases..
Buying a Gift Card with a Credit Card - Does It Count as a Cash Advance?
Comments
No I churn through credit cards buying gift cards from my workplace at a discount to get bonus points
Gift cards are a commodity, while cash is king.
Gift cards are not cash advance. Cash from an ATM is cash advance.
I’m pretty sure I heard that Citi or GE money treat them as cash advance. Amex definitely don’t. I think it also depends where you buy. I think some online gift card shops are treated as cash advance for those cards I mentioned. It’s on this site somewhere. But if you’ve checked the terms you should be fine
I can guarantee both Citi and GE money don’t treat it as cash advance.
Source: have both cards and have bought gift cards in the past. Nothing like you’ve mentioned. To be absolutely safe, you can buy your gift card in store - that way it’ll count as a point of sale transaction, so definitely not a cash advance.
Ok
I just had a look. It may be where you buy through PayPal
From the rest of that thread, seems to be a problem with that specific vendor, not PayPal or the credit card company.
@hashtagbargain: Man you read things funny. Your first comment didn’t contradict my comment. It’s clear that the credit card treats the site as cash advance Because PayPal says it’s a cash equivalent and the credit card company charges cash advance fees for that. The post confirms my first comment
normal purchase.
