Need Help with Modem/Mesh System for Hfc nbn and Switch over from Telstra to ABB

hey guys I will be moving from Telstra to ABB (from 100 speed to 250) and was thinking
1. if im in a big house and Telstra modem doesn't really have far range will switching to abb make a difference
2. how long would it take to switch over
3. would I need a mesh system and if yes what do ppl recommend
4. what is the max speed a Telstra smart modem 2 can get
5.does the above modem work with mesh systems
6. if my speed cuts out when we have a lot of devices on the wifi (nbn has come out and fixed/said there is no problem) what would ppl recommend I do.(change modem, get mesh system , etc.)

Yowzers there is a lot going on in this post.
I'll just be brief because it seems like home networking isn't really your cup of tea, and that's fine.
Some tips, the ISP modem/ all in one things are usually rubbishy and worth moving to a dedicated Access point or as you suggest mesh system to deliver your LAN/ WLAN
You say your house is big, if you notice dead spots then invest in a mesh and or better router, you don't really need the most crazy all in one modem.
I would suggest something extremely user friendly, and that I don't have a lot of knowledge on consumer level stuff but I use https://www.smallnetbuilder.com/ from time to time with that sorta guff.

Just a thought, it may even be worth getting a pay by hour tech to do some assessment and recommend a product as asking in an online bargain forum you will get good suggestions but it may not fit your purpose.

Kept this response vague as there is just far too much going on there and hoping some basic tips help, even if they don't best of luck

    • I know bit about home networking there is only one dead point but we don't need wifi in that room the thing is that in my room which Is 15-30m away from router I get one bar wifi and speeds of 5-40mps and one bar but for some reason on an iPhone 11 Pro (maybe because of wifi 6) the speeds are usslay higher then other device by about 30-50mps I think I need something to handle more bandwidth for more devices?

      • You're on a 100 plan and only seeing 5-50mbps?
I would possibly fix that before going to a 250 plan. Seems like a waste of money if there's network issues bottle necking your speeds.

Are you properly utilizing both bands (if you're getting 1 bar on 5ghz, try using the 2.4ghz), check there's no neighbors using the same channels etc.

        • We have already gone to the 250 plan an we got 288 last night but we think there is an issue with the modem but we aren’t going to get a mesh system as we are moving soon

    1.no
    2. Depends on what you are on but it should be quick in my experience.
3.if current Telstra moderm doesn't cover most of your area i would recommend getting a mesh

    • 2 how long did it take for you and what speeds to get now and what provider did you move form
3 it covers most ares but speeds are not fast

      • 2.Well for i move to Aussie previous provider was TPG took me one day for them to transfer the connection cause i sign up to their plan really late at night like 11PM😂 , speed im getting with them is an improvement getting around 85mbps to 94.

        1. Maybe you try and get a mesh (check out OzBargain deals i see the tp link deco 5 selling for $188) it helps boost the WiFi range and focus on getting the speed you are paying for, but do your research first before buying.
    • Nah I wouldn't bother with a single router.

  • 1) not at all for wifi.
    2) churning ISP can be done in 1 hour or less.
    3) Nest wifi, Deco M5 or M9.
    4) with wifi?
    5) if your buying a mesh you don't use the Telstra smart modem.
    6) mesh.

    • 4 is with wifi

      • 4) The best wifi result I have seen is 520Mbps.

Telstra to ABB took about an hour total for me. Smart modem 2 works fine for me, I recommend using that where your NTD is and then route access points of your choice around the house with ethernet cable. If not possible, mesh is the option.

    • ok thanks

    • also what time do you switch at?

      • 11am. Anytime during business hours preferably in the morning so that you have the best chance possible for the order to process and the infrastructure in your POI to changeover to ABB's CVC.

        • So what it be slower if I would switch over now?

    1. No, the service doesn't matter as far as "range" is concerned…
    2. Normally about 1-2 business days, but in my experience i was only without for less than 4 hours while it all got switched out.
    3. You don't NEED a mesh system… but just like all things, if you can afford it, then yes, you NEED it haha I have the Google Nest Wifi 3 Pack, mesh systems are usually Router only, so be aware that most still need a modem to act as a bridge with the mesh system giving you your Wifi Goodness :)
    4. I'm using my Telstra Smart modem in bridging mode for the Google nest Wifi system, and i can get 94down/24up on a 100/20 FTTN plan
    5. Yes my guy, it does.
    6. it might be the telstra modem you have, it might be the wiring in the home, it might be the distance from the node, it might be the servers you're trying to connect to, it might be your understanding of Mbps vs MB/s… point is, its hard to tell. Do what you can with the new provider and if possible a new modem with a mesh system. and if you're still having issues then it may be something an electrician or technician might have to have a look at.

Keep in mind when doing a speed test, they measure in mega-BITS per second (Mbps) but when downloading i.e. a game, it's measured in mega-BYTES (MB/s). This is important when you compare your download speeds of games to the speed tests you run since you might be downloading the game at 9MB/s but the speed test is showing 72mbps. 1MB/s = 8Mbps.

So moral is, divide your speed test results by 8 and you'll have a good ball park of what your download speed will be :D

    Hope that's helpful guys!!

Thanks everyone have moved to ABB and got 288 think there is an issue with the range of the modem but we are moving soon so it’s not worth it to fix
