  • Should I get this or an M5 3 pack for $230~?

    • get this instead - Comes down to $472 with ebay code…. but its the last one tho
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/TP-Link-Deco-M9-Plus-3-pack-AC22…

    • M9 is faster and despite there being only two of them will cover the same or more ground. Plus the M9 has a dedicated backhaul band which is a big plus over the M5.

    • If you're on a gigabit connection, I reckon the M9 Plus would serve well. Else, you might be better off with the 3-pack because it's cheaper plus you get better coverage. That's what I think anyway.

I just did a price match at Bunnings for: https://www.auspcmarket.com.au/tp-link-deco-m5-whole-home-me…

Hopefully they still have stock when you try to, try giving them a ring too!

Thanks for the replies too everyone

Hey mate that’s great …any possibility you would be able to upload the receipt by any chance ..just want to make sure if they deny in bunnigs I can quote on to that..

        • No luck for me, called up Ellie at Oakleigh Bunnings who said auspcmarket doesn't have a pickup option, so they won't match it.

        • +1

My local Bunnings (Notting Hill, Vic) refused because they're not on the list of the allowed online stores to beat.

          • @fowl: Bunnings' price was $268 yesterday, but it's $279 now. An easier bet might be to get Officeworks to 5% price beat so it'll be $265.

  • Anyone got experience to price beat in Bunnings? They are advertising 10% beat.

    • Really easy to do so, just give them a ring beforehand

  • Does this have enthernet out

    • Yeah there is 2 LAN/WAN Gigabit ethernet on each M9.

      • Me too

  • Can somebody please clarify , can you plug it into your existing router(Huawei HG659) in my case provided by Tpg ,or do you need to Get rid off your existing router. And Then you plug it in the Nbn box(HFC connection )directly .

    • +1

I have exactly your situation. I plugged this directly into the NBN box. I got rid of the HG659.

As you are on TPG HFC (like me) when you run the setup app there is a VLAN setting you must choose - choose the TPG option or set VLAN = 2

      https://www.tp-link.com/au/support/faq/2465/

As you are replacing your router you will need to choose PPPoE login during setup and enter your TPG login and password TPG initially gave you into the app as you are setting up.

      • Thanks for your help mate, appreciate that , but I have few other smart devices plugged into my huawei LAN PORTS ..so I believe the TP LINK DECO-5 comes with 1-2 lan ports .so how do I replace that or it in other words where can I plug in my other smart devices Which are already plugged in the Huawei LAN PORTS..any idea about this ?

        • +1

          1) do what altitudinous has done and to add more LAN ports get a switch and connect the switch to any of the Deco.
          2) leave the Huawei configured as it is and configure the Deco as an access point in the TP-Link settings.

To get the most out of the Deco I would go with 1).

          • @Twix: Thank mate ,So by option 2 you mean to plug the deco 5 in my existing Huawei router(lan) and use the deco as an extender ?

            • +1

@Sunnyoz: If your going with 2) yeah connect it that way. The Huawei is doing the routing (disable the Huawei wifi) and the Deco is doing the wifi network.

        • +2

Each of the three nodes has 2 LAN ports - except one of the LAN ports is used to connect to the nbn device so that leaves 5 free. You can indeed use a switch, I have a 5 port switch connected to one of the nodes for extra ports.

        • +2

The only limitation with doing it the way I suggest is that you cannot use the TPG supplied phone line - there is nowhere to plug in the phone on these devices.

          • +1

@altitudinous: Fair enough mate, I thought the same way too(about the phone limitation )thanks very much for helping out with the insights..

          • @altitudinous: Hey mate would you know what settings should I do on my deco 5 to ensure I can make my new wifi name and password Same as my old one (Huawei )So that I don’t have to re-enter the wifi password in all my previously connected smart devices(15-20 devices)…if I was to go with option one and remove my existing router ..any tips

            • +1

@Sunnyoz: Follow the steps on this video

The changes you need to make are to enter your TPG account details (don't forget to put @tpg.com.au on the end of your username) and open the VLAN settings menu down the bottom, turn on VLAN and press next, press on VLAN mode, select Australia-TPG network, now the VLAN ID will say number 2 and press next.

When it asks to create your wifi network enter the same wifi network name and password as the Huawei.

Ignore the settings on part 3 of the video.

@Twix: Thanks mate you are a legend ..cheers for your help..

https://www.tp-link.com/au/nbn-compatible-device/ the Deco M9 support HFC so you can replace your router with this setup. You could also turn off wifi on your router and wire this kit to it, but I don't see why you should do that, the Huawei is a fairly basic router.

      • according to the list: M5 support HFC too?

        • Yeah the M5 can be used on HFC.
