Inputs for Trip to Snowy Mountains

Hi Guys,

I am planning to take my 3 yrs old kid to Snowy Mountains.

We don't want to do any skiing and just want to play in snow.

I live in Sydney and takes 6 hrs to reach by car to Snowy Mountains.

So thought of staying overnight in near by Jindabyne, checked online for accommodation, they are super expensive.

Any suggestions to visit snow and not spend so much money?

Also, is the car parking in Thredbo near the snow ? Or do we need to walk a lot to reach to snow.

Stay canberra one night then do a day drip.
Plenty of snow prior to thredbo.

    • We did this with our kids when they were younger. Canberra also has some cool attractions like Questacon and the dinosaur place, though I admit a strange love for Cockington Green.

edit: forget the big resorts like Thredbo, etc. Look at Corin Forest.

  • Last time I went I think Cooma was the best Price/Distance ratio.

Nice big town with facilities and just about an hour away from the snow.

Stay in Canberra and try Corin Forest instead of Thredbo/Perisher.

      Do this^^ ^^

Not just cheaper than driving to the snow but because of restrictions they aren’t allowing anyone into the resorts with out a lift ticket. Look up Corin Forest it’s great for kids.

      • Thanks

    • Wow I didn't even know Corin Forest existed, thanks.

    • Thank you

  • I seem to recall them saying there will be no "snow play" this year due to coronavirus. Given all of the other related restrictions/hassles that seem to be existent this year, I'd give it a miss and try again next year.

Indeed no snow play. Can't toboggan on a slope beside the carpark but can queue in lines for lifts. Quad chairs will be limited to 2 people while double chairs will keep 2 people.

      These rules are so random.

      • The whole thing's been random from the start.

Ten people at a funeral, five people at a wedding.

Can't ride your motorbike for something to do, but can ride your bicycle for exercise.

Can sit at home with your family all day, but can't go for a drive to get the kids out.

Can't sit on a park bench to eat your lunch, but presumably can walk around it in circles.

Can't have more than 10 people in the local cafe, can have 20,000 at a protest.

        Random. Random. Random.

        • I don't believe it's random. Follow the money.

@dust: Big bicycle giving bags of money to thwart the poor home grown motorcycle industry I guess.

    • Basically none of the free snow activities are allowed. Go figure.

  • Thanks Everyone for the valuable suggestions.

Wait till it snows at Oberon. Make sure you have at least an AWD and head out to shooters hills. As long as the roads are open you're free to do what you want

September mid week is much cheaper.

Peak snow depth on average is end of August.

All restrictions on domestic travel should be gone in a month from now, if not sooner.

The poms are planning to entice yank tourists for late summer without any restrictions. Late summer in UK is September. See other post on this.
