  • Why does ASUS continue to use LPDDR3 memoryand USB 2.0 ports in 2020?

    https://www.asus.com/Laptops/ASUS-ZenBook-14-UX434FAC/specif…

    • +3

Yep this issue has come up in the previous deals, no one is advertising this laptop with the correct specs directly from ASUS.

      USB 2.0 is a joke.

    • +2

To give it an antique touch or maybe the R&D section is full of old people who think USB 2 is cool

    • +1

Quite surprising considering their phones are already using LPDDR4

Still confused about the usb 2.0 port considering theirs only one and the other one is usb 3

    • I know right! I bought the i7 variant for $2k not even considering it wouldn't have USB C charging etc. Asus really needs to get their act together in order to stay competitive.

  • Grabbed the i7 Zenbook duo for $1700. then came along the Asus G14 on ebay sales few weeks back for $2k so grabbed that and returned the Zenbook Duo.
G14 is pretty good bar two things:

    1. Keyboard backlight sucks big time.
    2. Fan is always on and running even in idle at around 22dB. You will get used to it but would have been good if it wasnt running if idling or watching videos etc.
    3. The aniME Matrix lid is in the R9 version so be careful when buying.

Other than that, I like it alot.

    • Does ASUS give you any software to control it with?

      Have you tried https://www.almico.com/speedfan.php ?

      • They do have Armory Crate that allows some control. You can change to silent mode which under no load it drops the fan noise by about 2dB's.
That said it still runs though.
I havent tried speedfan yet. I am cautious of voiding the warranty at this stage.

I have yet to find a type-c charging hub that can actually charge my laptop so you won’t miss it much I think, the wattage and voltage normally isn’t supported by most chargers so it’s not some universal magic bullet

This laptop appears to have a usb-c coms port, usb-a 2 and 3

I don’t think this would present a problem in most case usage scenarios, usb2 for mouse, usb3 for a HDD and usb-c left for a hub (if needed)

    • Weird you say that.

I picked up two of these puppies when they dropped to $49 each from Centrecom:

      https://www.asus.com/au/Laptops-Accessories/Universal-Dock/

It has a 4.74A 19V adapter so actually charges the laptop at 90W. Works fine on a HP Spectre x360 and Lenovo Yoga X1 Carbon for charging.

Ironically, I don't know of any ASUS laptops that can be charged by this? Or do the more expansive Zenbooks have USB-C PD?

I have loved my 2012 Asus Zenbook UX31A because it was bleeding edge at the time, however Zenbooks now seem to be so cut back in weird ares it's actually the only reason I don't buy another.

They really should at least have all USB3 ports, with at least 1 USB-C that supports power delivery and display out.

Ideally they should all have 2 Thunderbolt ports but the direction Asus has been taking lately I can only dream about that I guess.

  • Should you get the MSI Modern 15 on sales on eBay for the same price and spec? I think the MSI have DDR4 RAM while the asus have DDR3

    • -1

Most DDR4 laptops use 2400MHz speed memory, it’s not much faster than DDR3 (2133MHz) and DDR3 has a lower latency

Some may mention DDR4 RAM power savings, I say refer to the laptop’s rated battery life, 12.5 hours, think the proves it’s negligible

I can see the valid technical points however real-world you likely won’t care, you buying it for the battery life, looks, form factor and price for its class

    • Both are sleek looking, well built and very light weight. Do you prefer 15.6" or 14"? Also Asus UX RAMs are soldered on, if you think you may need more RAM later on then look elsewhere.

Btw, it seems the Modern 15 AU version screen only cover 45% NTSC, i.e. bad color (undersaturated/washed out compare to 72% NTSC on the Asus).

what do people think, this ASUS or the Dell Deal?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/544470

Use case does not involve gaming.

Im leaning towards the dell mainly for the extra 8GB ram..
everything else i belive the Asus is better including screen and build quality
note the USB2 port does not bother me.

    • Good point note that the dell have the core i7 10th gen too. But the design and built quality give the Asus a push. So hard to decide 😂

    • Yeah the display is better on the asus,

  • Does this have a touch screen ?

    • Yes, the touch pad is a touch screen. Main screen is not.

  • Damn not available anymore
