Decent monitors for Vertical/Portrait orientation?

My current one is just an older monitor I put in portrait mode, and it is an eye sore. I constantly have to move it around to see anything.

Are there any good monitors made for vertical mode?

  • Isn't the only difference just logo placement? Am I missing something?

  • In what way is your current monitor an eye sore? That sounds like a resolution problem - that is, not enough pixels. What resolution is your older screen?

You need to look for a monitor with more vertical pixels (which will be horizontal when you rotate it). Less than about 1200 pixels and you'll likely continue to need to scroll around at least sometimes.

For example, a full HD (FHD) monitor is 1920 pixels horizontally by 1080 pixels vertically. When you rotate it, the screen will be only 1080 pixels wide, and more web sites than you'd think don't work very well at such a low screen width. Some programs also have problems with narrow screens.

Here are some common screens sizes:

    1280 x 1024 Super-eXtended Graphics Array (SXGA)
    1366 x 768 High Definition (HD)
    1600 x 900 High Definition Plus (HD+)
    1920 x 1080 Full High Definition (FHD)
1920 x 1200 Wide Ultra Extended Graphics Array (WUXGA)
    2560 x 1440 Quad High Definition (QHD)
3440 x 1440 Wide Quad High Definition (WQHD)
    3840 x 2160 4K or Ultra High Definition (UHD)

FHD is about the minimum that I'd suggest, but you'll still have some problems with that, depending on what you want to display. If possible, try for something with 1200 or more as the second figure.
