I won't give the brand of laptop away just yet (you could do a quick search on Google and you'd find it if your really wanted to) but it is a known brand without being the usual household name. I bought my previous laptop from this company and have been very happy with its performance and customer service.

I'm wanting to know, based on these specs, what would you pay or consider a good price? What "household brands" offer similar specs and at what price?

TIA

  • Well, that could be as low as ~$1750 when Dell had a discount and 20% off, or ~$2,200 during a normal discount or the RRP around $2799. I had a primary NVMe and a secondary drive in mine, I paid $2299.

    • What Dell has these specs? Thanks for the comment.

EDIT - just looked at Dell laptops in the 17.3" range and even with the 20% discount nothing is under 3k? Not sure if $1,700 price range in Dell is realistic?

      • It was has been previously $1500 for 2060 with 60hz display and $1760 for 2070 maxq with 144Hz display. Of course this was pre-corona times, not sure when or even if we can expect the prices again

        • Thanks for the links! Yeah I was trying to find 9th Gen models on clearance but most stores were sold out or if they were in stock, once up-speced to what I wanted came to the price of almost the 10th gen laptops, which this one is.

          • @CrocDundee: Just looking at the Dell website, it looks like the 17" G-Series range is no more.
Looks you'll need to spend over $2k for the specs you want.

            • @FireRunner: yeah - I've been looking for a few weeks and was trying to get something under 2k for the above specs and 17.3" but have had no luck. best so far is this one at $2,300 delivered.

              • @CrocDundee: There's a couple on Amazon (9th gen i7) right now:
Lenovo Legion $2152 and Asus ROG $2250

                • @FireRunner: Came across those ones as well. They are good but thought it was worth an extra $150 (vs the lenovo) to get a 10th gen, 1tb SSD upgrade and a few other minor upgrades.. Even the ASUS one is only $50 cheaper for not as good as specs unfortunately… I wouldn't want to pay over 2k for those specs.

                  • @CrocDundee: Fair enough. From your Metabox link below it looks like the base model (120Hz display, 250GB SSD and 8GB Ram) is already $2290 unless you're somehow getting further discounts?

                    • @FireRunner: Yeah I up the specs to the above configuration in my OP and got them to discount further to $2,300 delivered as I am a repeat customer. Looking to pull the trigger but wanted to see what the ozbargain community thought or could recommend that was better value for the same specs.

                      • @CrocDundee: Ah ok, I think it sounds decent for the specs.

                        • +1

@FireRunner: Thanks heaps for the feedback and comments. The laptop looks to be good without it being an awesome bargain/steal. I guess I'll go ahead with it.

  • +1

The Dell XPS is a premium laptop that commands a premium price. You'd be comparing against the Dell G series gaming laptops although it doesn't look like the new 17" models are out.

There have been some cracker deals earlier in the year. Example: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/501193 or https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/500545

As for your specs. $2000 would be a good deal and probably $2500 the most any self respecting ozbargainer would want to spend. Maybe up to $3k for random member of the public.

    • Thanks for the feedback and comment. The brand of this 'speced' laptop is Metabox and specs have been upgraded in some areas - be keen to know where I could get the same specs and warranty for $2k though?

      • You'd need to catch something on sale like the Dell ones I linked.

        • yeah - been searching for weeks and hoping I'd get something on clearance like a 9th gen one but have had no luck unfortunately :/

The best I've come up with is this one with the above specs for $2,300 delivered
