  • holy crap… half price?! whats going on around at sony?!

  • +2

    fw 3.15 ;)

    • +3

someone will eventually come in and ask if it's firmware < 3.55 :)

      • sorry, i am a bit confused with firmware thing, does firmware really effect the console? sorry, i am not that good with tech gadgets

        • +1

you don't need to know then ,the firmware is free so dont worry

        • -6

          .

        • +1

People like to pirate games and can't install the custom firmware required to pirate software on any firmware above 3.55.

        • 3.15 has Linux, Other OS as it's called.
The newer firmwares don't have it. Those attacks on PSN a few months ago were essentially the nerds getting back at Sony for removing the Linux feature.

Edit: @antwill D'oh! I dunno how I missed that one. Sorry haha.

        • +1

Sage, the slim never had Linux… It was removed due to cost reductions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3_system_software#V… for proof. Their reasons for the firmware are purely for 'homebrew'/pirating games.

        • +1

          @antwill

Another reason for firmware is for running Linux. I'm pretty sure that Linux itself isn't counted as homebrew. You can run Linux on a slim if you have a hackable firmware version.

        • I am well aware of that deek, except who are we kidding, the 5 people that used Other OS even though it ran like shit, probably installed it to continue their circlejerk while everyone else uses 'homebrew' which for quite a while, the only homebrew available was backup launchers.

        • Dont make assumptions about 3.55 being only for pirating.

I own every game on my ps3 and simply hate changing discs. With firmware 3.55, my house is neat and tidy - all my games are in the shed and I can play things off HDD. As I never play online or buy DLC, I'm not missing out on anything.

I hate people that make these assumptions. Even though I acknowledge that most of the time people are using it for piracy.

If the PS3 had a client akin to steam to allow all games to natively be played discless, I would love it.

        • @justtoreply You are the 1%

      • What firmware do you think it is? I saw V3.0.

    • Are you saying the 250GB PS3s all come with 3.15?

    • for sure or just guess? not trying to be rude, but thought one would only know when they switch on the console.

  • i haven't keep track of gaming world for years, but thinking of getting a PS3. Can somebody help me out by stating whether this price for that console is a good deal?

    Thanks.

    • Decent deal considering the 320GB model goes for about $100 more than the 160 model, and here you're paying roughly the same amount as the 160gb model. But nothing too special I'd say.
If it weren't for the $150 price drop a few weeks ago, this would be a really good deal.
I don't think you'll see a better deal than this any time soon, unless you consider bundles.
but I wouldn't buy the console out of the blue for this deal. (Unless I was looking for an older console in particular)

  • Another $50-$100 (depending upon retailers) and you can get the 320GB which most likely includes playstation move and some crappy game alongside it. Not a deal IMO (I bought the 320GB last christmas for $399 inclusive of playstation move and some crappy game) so they should definitely be dropping a bit more on the lead-up to christmas.

    • +1

Harvey Norman $378 for the 320GB with FIFA 12: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/53581

But this is a great price for a 250GB PS3, especially considering the next cheapest is currently $298 for the 160GB at JB Hi-Fi which is sold out at most places. Just not sure if this can be price-matched (I know it says online only, but it's Game and everyone knows them).

    • +6

      ^ noob alert

people asking about firmware, are probably intending to do things sony wont like, so a move and some crappy games arent going to matter much to them

      • -3

Well said, mate. If many keep going with 'homebrew' stuff, there goes our much cherished video gaming industry.

        • +10

Damn, I didn't realize that modifying my purchased hardware to restore linux, add full media playback and enable hidden plus custom emulation would kill an entire industry. How much should I write on the check and who do I send it to?

        • -2

Apt user ID, Quickdraw. You might want to read my statement again.
Note the inverted commas, mate. 'Homebrew'.
I've done the same thing as you have to my consoles. I just don't believe in modding the machines to accept pirated games.
Heaps of ppl tweak their machines and call it homebrew but in truth, they are just screwing the gaming industry. Simply because it's 'their' machine.

      • +1

hundreds of thousands of users used the Other OS for more than just pirating, long before it was even an option.

'Pirating' option only happened once Sony took the Other OS away from users. It was a by-product but not the goal of those that started to look into 'hacking' the PS3.

        • +1

No one is talking about the Other OS, the slim never had it…

  • you forgot about the free shipping

    it's a good deal

a 250 for less than the price of a 160

however… some insiders say there's another price drop due before xmas

    • +2

and which insiders might these be?

      • +8

the ozbargain predictors would predicted the price of ps3 would go below 300. It happened a few days later.

        BELIEVE!!

        • +8

Is this a new ozbargain clairvoyant octopus?

  • +3

Good deal, but when was ps3 priced at $600?

    • +4

      $670 in January 2008.

  • +2

    Now to wait for broden…

  • +3

Hardly Normal have a 320gb with move starter for 368 so idk if thats a better deal or not

  • Harvey Norman 320gb with FIFA 12 for $378. I reckon this is a much better deal.

  • So um, just to confirm with the post above, this ps3 comes with firmware 3.15?

  • -2

even if it is firmware 3.15, won't Sony make you update anyway when you try play a game online ?

    • +2

lol, you should really spend some free time looking up jailbreaking a ps3

  • out of stock anyway.

      • +4

        ujealous?

    • bummer!

  • +1

I brought a few of these from myers sale for $299 the firmware is 3.0.1

  • +2

paid for it last night, got confirmation few hours ago :) nice post

  • XBox Live is much better online experience.

    • I've never tried XBox Live. PSN is free though, and is a fine online experience. I'm not into cross game chat, so I can't see too much of an advantage in Live.

  • Out of stock online :(

  • i want one…out of stock :( is there any way to price match and get it from somewhere else? HELP

    • +2

You realise they no longer make them and barely anyone sells them? GAME was just trying to get rid of their few left over units.

  • +1

For those that missed this deal, the Harvey Norman one is now live. http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/53581 . Good deal if you had planned on picking up FIFA 12 anyway, and a larger HDD.

  • Is the PS3 a good multimedia device? I'm tossing up between a blu-ray player or a PS3. I already have an Xbox 360 so I would only purchase exclusives on the PS3. Can you transfer movies onto the hard drive?

    • +1

The PS3 is one of the best multimedia devices out there. I use it for almost everything including playing music, movies, view photos, browsing the Internet and offcourse gaming.

  • My PS3 just died of the YLOD (Yellow Light of Death) yesterday. They want to charge me $175 to fix it. Argh! Thinking of attempting a fix myself (and/or buying one of these new ones).

    • @blaze - I've gone through YLOD on two of my original Fat 60GB PS3s.

First I've attempted to fix myself

Heat Gun + Flux = worked for 3months then YLOD again.
Did it again as above and worked for another 3 months then YLOD again.

Then Took it to a place in Bankstown to get it fixed $110 + infrared heat + 6months warranty
Worked for just under 6 months. Got it repaired again, worked for 3 months YLOD again! Now both on ebay.

So you can try this or just save your self the pain and get a new one.

  • i received it today and it had been used by someone with user name "mr5abi". firmware version was 3.55.

    • Used?????

    • Did it have any other files on it? Hahah.
Check how much free space the drive has.

  • Nevermind.

  • Got mine wasn't used completely new. FW 3.30.
