A good budget home NAS for Plex:
* Intel Celeron 2.41GHz dual-core CPU
* 2GB of RAM (expandable up to 4GB)

Got one of these last month from Amazon, together with two WD 12TB drives from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/538809

I got Xpenology running on it for about a week now, and so far so good:

looking to get myself my first NAS box, any deals on 4 bay drives? I think 2 bays are too small

    • You just missed the 4 bay one about a month ago for $300ish.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/535164

      • Yeh that's the price range I'm aiming for. Will wait for another deal like that to come out. I'm in no rush for it, I'm planning to slowly update my computer system.

        Currently I have

        HP 800 G1 Elitedesk - I7 4770, 16gb ram, 512 SSD, 1050ti

My upgraded system will need to be I7 or AMD equivalent cos I plan to run Virtual machines on it.

Still deciding weather I should get an SFF or laptop.

Why not put that current HP system into a larger NAS compatible chassis when you upgrade and roll your own with FreeNAS, Open Media Vault, or Unraid?

          • +1

@smashman42: I'll reuse my current 3.5" HD from the HP system but planning to sell the rest of the system on gumtree

Hah I thought this was a toaster when I first saw it. Even the name resembles a toaster :)

  • Which is better? This or the F2-210 with quad-core 1GB ram?

    • This one potentially. What are you planning on using it for?

      • What can NAS drive be used for other than storage?

        • They have apps that you can run. I use Docker and run things like my Unifi controller and Pi Hole off it.

      • Just to run a Plex server

    • this by the number

    • +2

The F2-210 uses ARM and this one is Intel x86.

  • Are these okay running SAB, Sonarr & Plex?

  • Are these good for IP security cameras?? Thanks.

  • FreeNAS, Open Media Vault, xpenology or Unraid? Which is the preferred OS for nas

  • "I got Xpenology running on it for about a week now, and so far so good:"
So you've basically got a cheaper Synology NAS by doing this?

    • That is awesome, cant believe the guy did this - I want to test it just for fun

      • OS is installed on a USB flash drive inside the enclosure making it even easier.

        • +1

Yeah just like freenas and a HP microserver - love it

        • I think Terramaster is trying to stop you from tinkering their NASs. The USB flash drive in my NAS was glued to the port but it wasn't too difficult to undo it. Not sure if this voids the warranty though.

          • @juser10: I believe that's always been the case.

            • @Clear: Right, thanks. I was expecting something like this.

Running the OS in USB is not good, if you wish to keep it for a long time. Higher number of writes makes it prone to fail soon.

          • +1

@chimps: Only the bootloader is on the USB. The actual OS is installed on the HDD.

      • yeah it was my long weekend hobby project. it was quite fun - shucked external HDDs for the first time following this video:
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QApvLyorr3g

    • I had an old WD NAS from about 10 years ago and it was almost full. I was tempted to get a DS918+ but it was a bit pricey, so I did some research online and came across Xpenology.

  • Centre Com have the TerraMaster D2-310 2 Bay listed as $219 (down from $249).
From my quick look around they seem to be about the same as the F2-220 posted by OP, but I have no experience with this, I'm still ruminating over jumping into the NAS world.

    • That's not a NAS. It's like an external HDD with raid. Good price tho, Amazon is selling that for $239.99.

      • Hmmm, you're right it seems, my bad there.
It looks identical to the F2, weird…

  • Unavailable.

    • Just checked - there is still one in stock at 6:50PM (AEST)

juser10 which loader did you use and do you have any tips?

    • Seconding this - also did you need the VGA adapter or were you just able to boot off USB?

    • Just adding since we didn't get a reply, I've started testing OpenMediaVault 5 which boots off usb.

This is the guide I used: https://www.reddit.com/r/OpenMediaVault/comments/gfugws/inst… good luck!

    • Notes I wrote down last month:
      Download the following files:
      - DSM_DS918+_25426.pat
      - extra918plus_v0.13.3.zip
      - synoboot-ds918.zip

      Tools:
      - osfmount.exe
      - win32diskimager-1.0.0-install.exe
      - pw12-free.exe (optional)

      SW steps:
      1. mount second partition of the boot loader image inside synoboot-ds918.zip using osfmount.exe
      2. overwrite extra.lzma and extra2.lzma in the second parition with those in extra918plus_v0.13.3.zip
      3. save synoboot.img (encountered some error msgs in osfmount but appeared to work nonetheless)
      4. use win32diskimager to create a bootable USB with synoboot.img

      HW steps:
      1. take f2-220 apart to allow access to the internal USB drive of the f2-220 (see youtube video for examples)
      2. note in my unit some glue has been applied to affixed the usb drive to the usb port; some effort was required to remove the drive from the port
      3. insert your newly created usb drive with synoboot.img in the usb port
      4. re-assemble the unit back together with the HDDs

      DiskStation installation:
      1. boot f2-220 with the new boot loader
      2. determine f2-220 IP address e.g. from router web UI
      3. use a browser to access the DSM installation screen
      4. use manual installation to install DSM_DS918+_25426.pat (note: it failed the first time but worked the second time)
      5. follow on-screen steps to create a user account after installation
      6. after logging on, (HDDs are not visible at this stage) create a volume using the HDDs
