nbn FTTP Modem

I am on the market for a modem, I guess these day they all, or at least most, come with WiFi as a router.
This would be used in a townhouse for home use and maybe a later for small business. Some security would be required.
Here is also Huawei router hg532d available if this can be utilised in some way.
I am opened to your suggestions from experiences. Thank you. The budget is around $150.

FTTP should have a box on premise - this is the actual "modem"". (Example of box https://www.hills.com.au/p/fire_security/home_integrated_sys… )

All you really need is a router so you can use your Huawei and spend $0.

    • This, the OZB way

    • I really like your reply, Thanks. Should there be Internet at the point so I can check if it's working, or I should contact the ISP first for this?

Get in touch with your ISP to provision a new FTTP service.

      • If you don't have NBN now, no point of checking it.
You can check NBN website or ISP will be able to confirm if you have FFTP or not.
once sign up, activating the NBN connection is pretty quick and straight forward.

  • get mesh wifi - tenda mw3 or tp-link deco

    You don't need a modem…

Mesh is the way to go, and you can plug it straight into the NBN Modem

Have tried a few but found the Google Mesh and Ubiqiti to be the best if you are willing to spend the $$$

    Tenda is also highly rated.

    • Thanks, and I'll try the Huawei first, and if there's an issue I'll look more into the mesh, maybe tp-link?

      • I found the TP link units to be iffy at best (personal exp)

really long story but i helped a friend at uni who was doing an assignment on mesh technology and he had me use a heap of them over a 3 month period and give "real world" feedback.

from what i used i wouldn't but the TP Link again

I currently have the Google Wifi (the prev gen to current one) and i am very happy.
As i said the tenda has awesome reviews on here as well as other tech forums

        • *wouldnt buy the TP link

        • What TP-Link mesh did you test?

          • @Twix: A few phone calls and nbn is now active. The Huawei router is not compatible with nbn, so a purchase has to be made.
I'm now deciding between Tp-link deco e4 you mentioned and TP-Link TL-WR841N that has good reviews.
The disadvantage for the e4 is that the top floor doesn't have socket available in the hallway where I would want this. If going with the TP-Link TL-WR841N could the Huawei be used, if needed, as an extender?

            • @durendal: Nah don't get the TP-Link TL-WR841N. It's a 12 year old router with slow wireless N300. Deco E4 or M5 with wireless AC is a much better buy.

    Some security would be required.

Such as? VPN, deep packet inspection?

    • I was thinking of something like VPN for the net, and also parental controls ATM.

      • Is that VPN installed on the router itself or a VPN app on your computer and phone?

        • A VPN software winscribe

          • @durendal: Under $150 is the Tenda nova MW5s & TP-Link Deco E4. Both have parental controls and come in a two pack. The max speed you get out of these is 100Mbps. To take advantage of the 250Mbps and 1000Mbps speed you need at a minimum the TP-Link Deco M5.

@Twix: Thanks for your input. I have applied with ISP for nbn access and it should be active between 1-3 days.

              • @durendal: I reckon it will be sooner. FTTP can activate within 30 minutes.

                • @Twix: That would welcome as I prefer to get it all ready by Friday for testing and have it available the next day
