Hi all,
I am a master degree holder in IT and wanting to become an IT teacher.
Do I just need teaching and assessment cert or another degree?
I used to be a manager at a fast food industry and I did obtain some certificates which may help me in credit transfer I guess?
Thanks
How Does One Become a Teacher in VIC?

Sometimes its not all about the money.
Seems like OP is all about the money.
I'd definitely look at the packages. Would prefer close to 6 figures.
Haha, you're dreaming. Maybe after 10 years tenure. Source: I have close mates who are teachers.
Haha okay that sucks. Well being in IT you get close to 6 figures and in 6 figures mostly but I like the idea of the profession.

Very helpful thanks.
Everything you need to know is at https://www.education.vic.gov.au/hrweb/Pages/default.aspx
Would prefer close to 6 figures.
You will start at $70k
If OP has worked previously or been home looking after the kids… they might start on more.
Hahaha 6 figures as a teacher. Good luck
AFAIK it’s now a 2 year course to be a teacher if you can leverage an existing degree/quals
Previously was a 1yr course
Depends on what/where you want to teach? Are we talking about primary school/secondary school/university/tafe/business courses/etc
For businesses, you could do a Train the Trainer certification from TAFE or get the CompTIA CTT+ certification.
To become a school teacher; you would need to do a 4 year Bachelor of Education degree. If you already have a specialist Bachelors degree; you can also do a two year Masters of Teaching degree instead.
Thanks. That's very helpful. I think I need to compare salaries for each of those before jumping onto a conclusion. Train the trainer sounds good.
I briefly considered becoming a special Ed teacher and that was a 2 year course. I already have 2 postgrad qualifications.
I’d be looking at going into something like sales force training or maybe Microsoft training for big companies. You do other work but get to deliver training courses as part of your job. If you want a 6 figure a salary unfortunately a lot of teaching jobs won’t be for you.
Seems nobody has actually answered your question.
Overall, becoming a teacher has become tougher over the years. It used to be the case that you could become a teacher by doing a DipEd, which was a 1 year course, so the time cost to becoming a teacher wasn't too great and it was quite easy to move from industry to teaching.
The standard way to become a teacher now is through a Master of Teaching, which is a 2 year course, so it'll take much longer to become a teacher. Even though the course is basically free (the HECS is minimal), taking 2 years off work for full time study will cost most mid-career professionals over $200k, so it's actually a very expensive proposition. The degree will be available at all major Australian universities, with some offering online alternatives if you wish to continue working whilst studying. I can't comment on the quality of the online offerings and how they differ from standard offerings.
Another option is to do an "internship" based degree, e.g. this one offered by the University of Melbourne, https://study.unimelb.edu.au/find/courses/graduate/master-of…, it will allow you to work as a teacher almost straight away and earn the degree through a combination of work and study.
I recommend that you look at the study design for Applied Computing - the VCE Year 11 and 12 computing subjects. Applied Computing
There is a lot of demand for teachers in the IT area, particularly those able to teach the aforementioned curriculum in the Senior School. However, please note that this will be only part of your allotment. You may be required to teach out of your area - probably most likely you would be asked to teach maths or maybe a commerce type subject depending on your background. You will definitely be required to teach Yr 7-10 students, and those subjects could range from a couple of periods per week basic compter applications, to web design and authoring/interactive digital multimedia and STEM.
Most schools have a student laptop program these days - the old days of a dedicated computer lab are no longer with us. So you have to rely on student computers being present and functioning…. and that's before even dealing with student management!
Happy to talk with you about working in a High School setting. It's not for everybody and it's certainly not somethinng you do for the $$$$
If you want to teach at a TAFE all you need is a TAE. Look up TAE40116. It's a year long.
If you want to teach in schools you'll need a Masters of Teaching (2 years)
What are your motivations to become a teacher, Op?
So you want to earn less than a casual at KMart while being responsible for up to 30 children who don't really care what you think?
