Things to Buy That Last a Lifetime

Hi guys.

I'm interested to know what things you have bought or are available to buy where you pay a premium but can be sure there is a very high chance they will last you a lifetime. Can you name some products that come with a lifetime guarantee? Obviously not junk you would buy from the reject shop. Cheers.

    Solid timber indoor furniture
Simple metal tools i.e. spanners, hammer will last if not abused

You've never been to a "frat" party?

    • +7

Cant agree enough. Having gone through sets of IKEA chip board and "modern" furniture. I realise the waste in materials when you bin the entire piece as one part breaks and it cant be restored.

Having purchased and kerb side picked up old cabinets / chairs etc I could easily restore / fill /re joint / sand / paint the solid wood furniture.
I have two wooden chairs from 1902 (copper plate stamped mgf date) and they are solid as.

You are not a good consumer AT ALL. A good consumer will just go n buy a new one.

        • +7

Absolutely thats the idea. Glad to be the worse consumer and shift toward "investing" in things like quality furniture.

Only if you but an old one. My 8.1 lasted six months and then it decided that it would do anything but phone calls.

      • new ones are not bad for durability, find they have durability but specs arent A+

the amount of times i've dropped my 5.1 and only a small hairline crack in the corner. either the phone is strong or chinese cases on ebay are lol.

        • My 8.1 was great while it could be used to make calls. It just decided to stop receiving or making calls it would just freeze.

It even is Ann Android one phone so latest software installed.

A factory reset did nothing. So I have a great looking fairly new but useless to make phone calls. It is mostly a small tablet these days.

          Shame.

      • But the 2g network was shut down ages ago, so even if you have an old one it's just a paperweight now.

        Also, I managed to break a few 3210s - they weren't indestructible.

Socket set for car repairs, that I bought 40 years ago. Got stainless steel (CrMo) instead of carbon steel with chrome plating which develops rust spots.
Good plan, until it got nicked last year, and I had to buy another.

    • trolley jacks
      car stands

      • +1

Id rather replace my trolley jacks and stands every x years

    • Recently got rid of my entire Sidchrome / Stanley / Snap on kit and picked Sunex CrMo impact sockets and Tekton wrenches.
Dropped the name for better quality.

My PhD is in Astrophysics but happy to give it a go … Incise down the middle of the ballsack , fish in there until you find the knotted vasal, cut it off , sticky tape the 2 ends together, close the midline incision on the ballsack with a neat little bow and …job done! Easy peasy. Now, you can go forth and procreate :P

@[Deactivated]: I’m female, but all I can say is “ow”.

            • @try2bhelpful: Disclaimer : This may or may not be how a real physician would do it.

@[Deactivated]: It would make an interesting episode of “embarrassing bodies”.

              • @[Deactivated]: Lol… that's pretty much how it's done. Just add in an operating microscope that is used to connect the ends.

                • @aliam: Lol! Hopefully , being a professional, you remember to reconnect both vasa deferentia and not just the one like I did up there🤦

Out of curiosity how much does a vv/ev cost?

                  • @[Deactivated]: Usually about $700 with a $200 rebate from Medicare.

                    • +2

@aliocroc: There's a Medicare rebate for a vasectomy reversal? So someone gets a Medicare rebate when they have a vasectomy and again when they ask to have it reversed? Why is the cost of the reversal subsidised by the taxpayers?

                      • +3

                        @[Deactivated]:

Why is the cost of the reversal subsidised by the taxpayers?

So they get it done by a medical doctor, not a stellar fusion doctor ;)

Also it makes economic sense in that they are probably going to increase the number of future taxpayers.

                        • +2

@abb: If anyone was wondering, a vasectomy reversal costs around $6000 after Medicare rebate or around $3000 if you have private health insurance. It is a 2-3hr surgery.

Add to that the cost of raising a child which is around $300k, or half a mil if you decide to private school him/her…

Yes they are, it’s painful and your balls turn black for a week

I told my misses at the time it’s the only time she will see black balls, how wrong that statement turned out to be

        • +6

          Did you get a pool table🎱? 🤔

Do you mind if I ask how much you paid for the reversal surgery so I know how much to charge MS Paint?

          • +3

@[Deactivated]: Still waiting on my quote.

            • @MS Paint: $2k for a reversal and I'll throw in a free vasectomy. BYO Stanley knife and needles. I'll provide the duct tape and fishing line to be used for the sutures. Deal?

        • I see what you did there

      • +1

I dunno, when the doctor was explaining it to me he said what they do now is cut & tie and then "sear" the ends to seal them up good.
He kept using the phrase "permanent male sterilisation" casually in sentences, I ask him if he could maybe not. No, he had to make sure the message got through that it's a one way deal 😷✂️🍆

        • Definitely reversible in most cases. Here's how it's done. If you're unlucky, they have to do more incisions..

          • @[Deactivated]: I remember watch a doco in which they use a gel inject into the tube. That gel can be dissolve later on to reserves the effects, cant find the vid now

A good quality double edged razor - had mine for 10 years and it still looks new. Buying this and using double edged blades will save you sooooooooo much money over Mach 3 rubbish or other supermarket products.

    • In the same boat, until I have to on shaving forever. At least I have enough feather blades left over if I ever take it up again.

    • +1

How did you learn to use it?

I kept cutting my face when going above the top lip.

      • +2

practice on a balloon. All in the angle you hold the razor.

      • Cheap razors, razors with a large space between the blade and the safety bar or open comb razors are easier to cut yourself with. I bought my first double edged safety razor for $15 and used it for 3 years, regularly cutting big chunks out of my legs. It broke after 3 years and I looked into it a bit more and spent $50 on an Edwin Jagger razor. I only occasionally nick myself with this new one.

      • Go slow and experiment with the angle. Watch some YouTube videos if you need to. It’s all about the angle at which you hold the razor to your face.

        • Thanks.

          Much appreciated!!

      • Got one of these as a gift a couple years ago, you can adjust the angle of the blade which should help prevent cuts.

        https://getrockwell.com/products/rockwell-model-t

These ones are quite expensive, but truly will last a lifetime.

      • Yeah I got a Rockwell 6C from ministryofshave. Nice razor, easy to clean, solid construction. Its the type of razor that you pick your setting and stick to it though because you have to change the plate to change the angle. That Model T adjustable would be a good investment though if you have particularly sensitive skin, or tricky curves. The quality of the blade goes a long way too. Check out the forum badgerandblade.com if you are interested in the nitty gritty of shaving. Some really good guides on there. Its a bit sad to say that the modern man has to learn to shave on the internet, but its true. Cartridge razors has destroyed the 'art' of shaving.

    • What’s the capital cost up front? I’ve started shaving regularly due to Corona.

      • +2

        US$10 https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32791325508.html

I also bought a mixed 50 blade pack for about $25 from an Australian supplier, once the initial blades ran out, to see which blades I liked. https://www.beardandblade.com.au/collections/double-edge-bla… Once these run out going forward i'll probably buy a 10 pack of feather blades for $6 a year.

I find it equal performance and comfort to cartridge shavers for daily shaving and much superior for longer hair after a few days growth. The above linked razor has adjustable aggressiveness dial setting and i eased into them initially for peace of mind and settled at about half way depending on blade brand.

I do keep a twin blade disposable to touch up around nostrils. As safety razor isn't as easily manoeuvrable. Though am considering manning up and getting a straight edge / cutthroat razor for this.

        • +1

Thanks. Handle plus 5 blades was $US 7.67 with a new user coupon. I look forward to ditching the Mach 3.

        • My God a futur replica to start with? A merkur would he a better alternative to start with

      • Can i ask why?

        • +6

Gotta wear a P2 mask as a frontline worker and with a beard I can’t get a good seal.

      • +1

I would start off by buying the Merkur 34c razor - it’s about $70 and will last for the rest of your life. It would be $10 or $20 to buy a mixed pack of blades to see which you like best.

        • Under $10 is more my style, thanks anyway.

          • @sween64: I’m doubtful that anything under $10 is going to last you a lifetime. I’d prefer to spend a little more now than pay $16 for 5 blade refills for the rest of my life, that will cost way more than $80 in a single year, let alone all my remaining years!

    • +1

Buying this and using double edged blades will save you sooooooooo much money over Mach 3 rubbish or other supermarket products.

Dont forget, the amount of Plastic you save the environment and oceans as these Schick/Gillete shavers are made of hard plastic

    • A good beard could last a lifetime.

I'm 60 and I'm still using the double edged razor my father purchased in the 60's when he was in his 20's LOL

    Weber Q

    • +4

      Do you mean weber kettle?

      if so then yes.

    • My one's maybe 5 years old, the enamel on the lid is starting to peel, and I probably need to replace the element. Also, they change the design so buying replacement parts is unlikely in the long term.

      • Weber are pretty good to email and deal with. My grandfathers Q2000 peizo stopped working and they sent him the parts out for free. On the Whirlpool forums Weber section people praise them for sending out parts and even lids for free.

        • cheers, i'll give it a go

My Staub Cocette is going strong after 12 years, looks barely used (although the new gas stove might change that). Cast iron is definitely something that can last a lifetime.
    https://m.petersofkensington.com.au/Products/Staub-Cocotte-R…

I would suggest high quality leather boots (like RM Williams) also, whilst getting them resoled can seem expensive if you only spend $150 every 5 years getting them resoled you would be well ahead compared to buying similar boots more often.

    • +1

      "only $150 every five years…"

i've been wearing an $80 pair of boots every day for 2.5 years and just bought a replacement pair. without the $500 upfront cost.

noted i did get a good deal on the first pair, it is inside work not out in the mud, worst they see is water and alcohol spillage. Also not 100% sure the second pair will last as long. Though the first pair has still got plenty of wear left in them they just aren't as pretty as before.

      • Julius Marlow? Aquila?

      • Yes. My old hush puppies lasted about 4 years, and I have pairs of rivers boots which are years old and get treated poorly.

    • Are there benefits of enameled cast iron I'm unaware of?

My bare cast iron frypan is great but I don't see the value or point of ceramic coated cast iron compared to glass and ceramic bakeware like this https://www.petersofkensington.com.au/Public/CorningWare-Blu…. In both cases the food is still against a ceramic coating. But ceramic/glass is lighter and therefore easier to clean as-in easier to manipulate/move/store away. Ok cast retains heat longer but once the food is cooked you want it to cool to an edible temp anyway. I guess you could open the oven door without loosing much heat before the oven heats up again. But is that worth the 4x or 5x price difference? I still wouldn't pay that though because the Corningware type regularly turns up in op shops and garage sales for $15 or <.

      • 'benefits of enameled cast iron' ?

I believe bare cast iron can be dissolved by acid like tomato juice - and you might not want that flavour in your food - so enamel is supposed to stop that

'worth the 4x or 5x price difference?'

if you're talking like this Le Creuset for $427 - https://www.petersofkensington.com.au/Public/Le-Creuset-Crem…, we bought close enough to identical from Aldi special buys for like $20 - Chasseur brand, Made in France - looks like Peters sells that brand as well - https://www.petersofkensington.com.au/Public/Chasseur-Macaro…

so the best place to buy this kind of thing is garage sales - in as new condition, for 1/10th of the new price.

My Ikea desk bought last year is falling apart, yet my dresser (hand-me-down from my parents) from 1923 is still going strong.

      • Where are they made?

      • My Ikea desk bought last year is falling apart

most Ikea products made in China these days , not Sweden as people think.

        • +3

The desk is made of MDF and hex screws. Even if it was made in Sweden it wouldn't last very long.
