Just got our yearly car service at our Mazda service centre done about 2 months ago. We just got a notice for car rego renewal and for the first one in 5 years we need to get a pink slip / e-safety check. I realized we can go anywhere to get a pink slip, but thought, hey we just paid $600 for a car service, Mazda would surely have had to check it’s road worthiness right? I called Mazda and they indicated that had I requested a pink slip at the time they would have run additional checks that they normally don’t do during a service and I would still need to pay $42 on top of our car servicing costs. Is that bullocks? Or is this really dependent on which mechanic you go too? I think it’s a bit rich to charge the full $42 for something they should be doing as part of a full service. A friends mechanic, does the echeck for free as part of their service.
Does an Annual Car Service Include The Same Checks Completed for a Pink Slip?

The service centre would only attend to the items required as per the Mazda maintenance schedule for your particular model. You may be surprised how little they do in your so called "full service"

Wrong. See above.
Is that bullocks?
No. See above.

Standard stealership charges. Find a good independent Mazda service centre on a Mazda forum and possibly save the $42 fee in other areas.
I believe the $42 charge for the rego check is a government mandated fee as any place I've gone to for my cars have charged the same amount.
$42 for pink slip is the maximum allowable to be charged. See RMS website for NSW

On NRMA it's $42

Why don't you do your servicing there then?
Switched from dealership service to private mechanic, around half the cost (even asked them to use genuine parts, which still ended up being way cheaper than dealership)
Question and solution all in one. Great first time post.
lol
A service is a service, a RWC is a RWC… Do some of the things on the RWC cross over from the service? Sure, but some things don’t, like checking tint and doing a brake stop test. Also there is seperate paperwork for the RWC. You might also find that the person who did the RWC was not the same person who serviced the car. The dealership may not even do RWC and sent it out to have the check done.
$600 is a lot of money for what is basically an oil & filter change.. Ouch!!
Most independent mechanics I know will incude a rego inspection with a service fee if asked. The things to be checked are items that would normally be checked during a service anyway.the brake check isn't done.
If your friends mechanic does it for free then the fee is being added into the service cost whether a safety check is being done or not.
You aren't obliged to use the dealership for service work either.
edit: If you had the safety check done 2 months ago with the service I don't think it's valid now anyway
In NSW it's valid for 6 months.
I believe you but also think that is laughable to be valid for that long.
The service should check that the car is roadworthy, but the pink slip requires a brake test, using a special machine that they would not do unless it is for the pink slip.
Having had the car serviced I’d be pretty annoyed if it did not pass a pink slip test shortly after because you are not just lying for an oil change, but an inspection as well - if done according to the book.
The pink slip inspection is pretty much lights, tyres, no obviously oil leaks or smoke and brakes tested (which mandates a quick drive). It’s pretty easy to pass with a well maintained car.
Chalk and cheese
A log book service is NOT a safety inspectionAnd for $40 odd bucks you can get it done at almost any mechanic.
Its common knowldge and Im sure this is NOT OPs first car
So why this post?Waste of time
Unless your car service included them sending an electronic report to the roads authority, no.
https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/esafety-checks-pi…
"When your vehicle passes the eSafety check, your mechanic will send the report to Roads and Maritime Services electronically."
You already have your answer:
"I called Mazda and they indicated that had I requested a pink slip at the time they would have run additional checks that they normally don’t do during a service and I would still need to pay $42 on top of our car servicing costs."
Sucks that Mazda didn't think to offer / up sell you this when having the car serviced… but once more you hit the nail on the head; "I think it’s a bit rich to charge the full $42 for something they should be doing as part of a full service."
