What Order to Buy PC Parts?

I'm building a PC and I've only done this once before about 7 or 8 years ago.

I have a case (NZXT H510i) and I'm trying to decide whether to jump on this popular RAM deal or not, given that I am probably going to wait a few weeks anyway to see what happens with the Ryzen 9 CPUs. Is the price of this RAM likely to fall much further? Is there new/better RAM coming out soon?

But more generally speaking, is it better to buy all the parts in one go, or in what order would you purchase them?

It's a large sized Lego kit, you need all the parts at the end so it doesn't matter which ones you grab first. Get whatever deals you can find while waiting for desired CPU.

Op hasn't said it but may be referring to compatibility in regards to purchase order.

Eg, purchasing a less powered psu then finding a good deal on med/high end gpu and not having enough power.

If you buy them all at one place, at the same time, then you have some recourse if they don't work together…..

Where’s the fun in that? We need the bargains. Every component should be a bargain.

      • Very true…..

        • Indeed……

          …..

          ……..

  • I bought last pc parts from 3 shops online. At the time I had 2 sticks of ram, mobo had a snapped off pin that stopped it detecting the extra ram I later tried to add.

Mobo was declined for warranty (eBay seller)

Now I only buy parts from b&m shops. Ymmv

  • That ram is not the best but great for that price. Id get the parts that you need with 100% certainty regardless of other parts that "could" change. Those being good psu and mobo.

    • Would you be able to recommend a PSU and mobo for a Ryzen 3900x build? I have an NZXT H510i case and the PC will be used for CAD and occasional 4K video editing as well as dabbling in some VR gaming (but I'm not a serious gamer). I guess the only other consideration worth mentioning is that I want to use 3 monitors (one 32" UHD with display port 1.4 and HDMI inputs and two 21.5" FHD monitors with only HDMI inputs).

All at once. They dont work unless you have all the pieces, some PC places don't let you claim (easy) warranty claims unless its within 14 days. Standard warranty claims take 6-8 weeks per part. Imagine one part screwing up, thats 2 months without a PC assuming they even refund you (they leave you in the dark).

  • Nobody has a crystal ball, but I'd jump on that RAM deal now. Unlikely you'll get a better deal any time soon. Personally I'd just go with the Corsair Vengeance LPX kit at $211 though. No point spending the extra $40 unless you really care about it lighting up. But then and again, I'd just save the $40 and get RGB fans and a light strip.
