    I see them very often discounted in Coles or Woolworths. Usually, 40-50% although Big W has a bigger range.

      Supposedly made in France = better. Made in the USA = worse.

      Some of these are made in France.

    Actually not true. Look at the ‘made in’ for each thing- the crappy stuff is made in the USA out of soda lime glass has the pyrex logo in lower case - this doesn’t have resistance to thermal shock and will shatter. The good stuff is still made in france from borosilicate glass and has the PYREX logo in capitals

    According to the listing above, the mixing bowls are crap but the casserole dish is good

      Borosilicate is the old Pyrex. Soda lime glass is the new Pyrex.

      Both are fine as long as you don't heat shock it. If you heat shock the new Pyrex (i.e. take it out of the oven and run it under cold water), it may explode.

      Borosicilate Pyrex is marketed as "PYREX" whereas soda lime glass is marketed as "Pyrex".

      Even though the casserole dish is made in France, it's listed as "Pyrex" which leads me to believe that it is the newer soda lime glass (aka "exploding Pyrex") variety.

        nah, I've been looking at this for a while, and I've not yet found anything that violates USA = Soda Lime, France = Borosilicate. They're distributed by the same company here despite the different sources so you won't see any differentiation in the marketing.

        Extra fun fact: The french borosilicate PYREX stuff is also sold under the brand name O'Cuisine (https://www.ocuisine.fr/brand/), which you can find at places like Peters of Kensington or Victoria's Basement - I believe it's made in the same factory as PYREX

          @mickeyb: Interesting! They also visually look different so you should be able to tell by inspecting it. Sode-lime glass has a blue-green hue.

            @dust: So THAT explains the difference between some similar looking sets (and also reason for some of the different coloured lids in the storage bowl sets).

          That seems to be the case for anything new. I do have an older PYREX measuring jug that is made in the USA and appears to be borosilicate (no green tinge).

          It seems that the US stopped making borosilicate pyrex in 1998.
