Rate My 3700X Covid-19 Build

Hi,

Jumped the gun back in March and finally built my first PC (always had laptops). PC part picker page: https://au.pcpartpicker.com/b/RhD2FT

My build:

CPU: 3700X ($438 from Wireless1)
GPU: Gigabyte RTX2070 Super Gaming OC ($759 from Umart)
Mobo: MSI B450M Mortar Titanium ($179 from CA)
RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 2X16GB DDR4-3200 ($229 from CA)
Storage 1: Crucial P1 1TB NVME SSD ($178 from CA)
Storage 2: Samsung 860 QVO 1TB SSD ($147 from CA)
PSU: Corsair RM650 80+ Gold Modular ($149 from CA)
Case: Fractal Design Meshify C Mini ($80 2nd hand, was spotless)
Monitor: MSI MAG341CQ 3440x1440 34in curved ($640 from FTC)
Accessories:
* Corsair ML140 2x140mm ($45 from Scorptec)
* NA-SYC1 (fan splitter) ($20 from Scorptec)
* Cooler Master Universal LED strip x2 ($30 from Scorptec)

TOTAL: Almost $2,900 including the monitor

On paper, some laptops are getting closer to desktop performance, like the 4900HS. Likewise, the newer laptop GPUs seem to have tightened the gap between their desktop counterparts. However, their biggest weakness IMO is thermal throttling, which is very manufacturer (of the laptop) dependent and rarely reach their potential.

Been primarily using this machine for games and work (software engineer), and the occasional personal projects and learning.

  • You may need to get the Mortar Max as the non Max doesn't support Ryzen 3rd gen OOTB, unless they updated it now?

    • +1

Yeah, the titanium had a sticker saying it supported Ryzen 3000. Otherwise, it does have a flash bios button which I could use.

    • Ryzen3000 ready OOTB since August 2019 stock from CA

  • Why the B450M? I see alot of builds avoiding x570 buildings, and was wondering if its because pci-e 4.0 isnt worth it just yet.

    • +2

I wanted a mATX and the x570 were too pricey and I don't see the need for PCIE 4.0 yet.

    6/10

thanks! any pointers for improvement for my next builds?

  • +1

    3/10. Don't like the colour…

    • +2

Don't trust this guy, he bought a Fiat

    • thanks! frankly, i should have foregone the whole rgb spectacle, i kinda prefer it being muted and clean.

    Yes

    $759 for RTX2070 Super, damn..

    • Is that a good thing? or bad? haha. Got it back in December, there was one that was being sold for $699 but this had better reviews and a type-c/virtual link port.

      • Good deal compared to now. They've gone up.

      • That's a good thing my man, you can't get a 2070 Super for less than $1,000 now

  • CPU cooler ? Or stock ?

    • +2

Stock wraith prism, been pretty decent imo. Always around 50-60 while gaming not very heavy games. Rarely reaches 70 (occasional spikes i think).

      • Fair enough, I mean I use a the stock cooler on my 2600 and seems to chug along fine.

  • Speakers are badly positioned

  • Cut the CPU for a 3600 and trim everywhere else to get a 2080.

    • What? Why replace the cpu??? It's an excellent cpu…if your reasoning is value for money then yes possibly

    • Is a 2080 really that better than a 2070 super? I think the diminishing returns are not worth it. Would rather have the 3700x since I won't be using this just for gaming.

  • +2

    Not bad…for a girl :p
Jk, I like it . My only complaint is with the table. How do people sit so close to their monitor?

    • Thanks for the reminder, I do need to sit further out or move the monitor deeper

      • Unrelated, but you've asked me previously where my wife was from and I avoided answering it. She's from Mauritius.

        • +1

Haha, yes, I remember. I think I guessed you were moving to Reunion, which is pretty close :P Did you ever make the move? Hope you are where you need to be mate

          • +1

@animasoIa: Reunion Island is the closest island to Mauritius. So yep, pretty good guess :) We're moving in 2022 but thought we might need to move earlier to be with the in-laws during the pandemic. Thankfully, they are doing just fine and we can take our time sorting our affairs here before our final move.

  • Nice, but need to get a bigger table

    • Yeah definitely, and I need to cleanup my current setup. Thanks!

  • I would swap for EVO instead of Crucial P1 as main drive
And definitely swap out for smaller monitor (27 inches, best for 1440p), you're sitting way too close

    • The EVOs are pretty pricey and I don't really see a lot of benefit for the price difference. In terms of reliability, is there a huge difference between both in real world scenarios?

  • I am also a fan of the EVO, as a main drive this is a great option

  • I rate it A+. If I was being picky maybe I would say go to 2TB on the QVO drive if you can stretch it.

    • Thanks! Yeah I wish I had gone 2tb, especially with how huge games are these days, but so far 1tb is fine.

  • good build

If you want to save money. I'd get rid of the nvme. (Unless you are reading/writign lot of data frequently unlikely to see a benefit)

If you have a bit more money. Consider a quiter cpu fan/cooler if noise is something you are worried about. (I have 3900x with noctua cooler so have not tried the stock cooler. From reviews it is great (temps/performance wise) but a bit noisy)

    • Thanks! I do wish I would have went for the 3900x + AIO, but I'm pretty happy with the 3700x and stock cooler. Rarely goes beyond 65, with occasional spikes of 70 under heavy load. Personally, not too noisy as others have mentioned.
